Caution

The warnings you recently posted on User talk:70.97.96.239 were a bit problematic. The edits referred to were not vandalism. The edits did have problems and needed "fixing", but were certainly not vandalism. Please be careful with the "vandalism" accusations. Thanks for your good work around here. Vsmith (talk) 13:34, 27 January 2017 (UTC)

@Vsmith: Thanks for the note. I really appreciate feedback.
Something very strange seemed to be happening with that IP. 70.97.96.239 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) was doing rapid-fire edits to articles, making 17 edits in 37 minutes to unrelated articles. This included six? fully formatted references. This would seem to be some kind of prepared edits, some fast copy/paste, some kind of bot test, or maybe the anon is a fast reader/organizer/typist and I'm getting old. The followup edit to Child, Food industry, and AirPods complicates the first hypotheses. Other then Bethel and Puyallup high schools are about 12 miles apart and the IP geolocates to Northwestern University in Washington which is about 40 miles from Puyallup, I don't see any connect between articles. The edits listed below are in order of the first edit. Diffs include all edits by the anon.
  1. diff Canyon High School (Anaheim, California) (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) Unreferenced and reverted by another.
  2. diff Bethel High School (Spanaway, Washington) (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) No refs, just changing "boys and girls" to "men and women" Another reverted this.
  3. diff Puyallup High School (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) A few minor corrections.
  4. diff Transhumanism (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) Unreferenced and reverted by another.
  5. diff 12th man (football) (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) Unreferenced and reverted by me.
  6. diff Pinterest (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) A few minor correction. No refs.
  7. diff Latrodectus (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) The IP changed "male black widow spider" to "black male widow spider" which I find rather racist.
  8. Bethel High School second edit w/ cite web
  9. diff Telepathy (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) Formatted ref added. Reverted by another "clickbait".
  10. diff Aleutian Islands (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) Formatted ref added. Current edit.
  11. diff AirPods (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) Formatted ref added. I reverted as "didn't belong in the lede".
  12. diff Child (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) Formatted ref added.
  13. diff Food industry (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) Formatted ref added.
  14. Child second edit - sentence added.
  15. Food industry second edit - simple change.
  16. AirPods second edit - simple change.
  17. diff Lung (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) Formatted ref added.
  • The references were all different sites. Fox, Cnet, Yahoo news, BBC, LA Times, collective-evolution.com
Pardon my lack of AGF, but this seems very suspicious. What do you think, Vsmith? Thanks again. Jim1138 (talk) 01:01, 28 January 2017 (UTC)
Strange indeed - I really don't know ... either a group effort (in a computer lab) or someone prepared a bunch of edits (offline?) and then did the rapid fire edits. Vsmith (talk) 01:26, 28 January 2017 (UTC)
If they were prepared, I wouldn't think the updates. Also, why were the refs added only at the end? Jim1138 (talk) 02:12, 28 January 2017 (UTC)

Mr. Jim I want to assure you that bhutto family is from arain tribe, because arains entered in sindh in 712 A.D. with MUHAMMAD BIN QASIM. Arains are from arbian roots and also landlords in punjab and sindh. As Benazir bhutto claims it while interview in 2005. She is claiming that her forefathers belongs to arabs. But RAJPOOTS are a Non-muslim family. And Muslims including peoples of Arain tribe defeat RAJA DAHAR (from Rajpoot family).see it on youtube, here is the prove.............https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vz3W1DcZvNs .......and for full video.......https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFYJuYuMjYc&t=78s — Preceding unsigned comment added by Choudrhy Muhammad Ahmad (talkcontribs) 10:55, 28 January 2017 (UTC)

Molecular Beam Epitaxy edit

Molecular Beam Epitaxy

You added back my removal of the 2009 sentence about it being the first oxide growth. "In 2009, molecular beam epitaxy has been used to deposit oxide materials for advanced electronic, magnetic and optical applications. For these purposes, MBE systems have to be modified to incorporate oxygen sources.[2]"

This claim is implies that the included reference is the first time MBE was used with oxide materials. It is not the first time.

A quick search shows, http://aip.scitation.org/doi/abs/10.1063/1.1593832 And, there are likely older references.

It feels like the reference was included by someone for self-serving purposes.

A general sentence on the kinds of molecular / atomic sources have been used would be more helpful. Skddp (talk) 22:38, 28 January 2017 (UTC)

Hello Jim1138 Previously, the layout of the image caused the page to glitch. The image was put previously such that some parts of the references was printed above the image. I wanted to fix this by transferring the image to a new topic and changing the layout. Sorry for any misunderstanding :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nipun 2002 (talkcontribs) 08:53, 29 January 2017 (UTC)

Here's the image: thumb As you can see, the image causes the glitch So I tried to fix it by removing the image form one of the subtopics and transfer it to the next to fix the glitch. Hope you understand :) Nipun 2002 (talk) 08:57, 29 January 2017 (UTC)

@Nipun 2002: You can use wp:template {{clear}} which will force a rearrangement. Also, putting it on the right side of the page may help. It often depends on the browser's width. I'll make a test. Cheers Jim1138 (talk) 09:00, 29 January 2017 (UTC)

@Jim1138: And I forgot, the image is in the wrong topic too Nipun 2002 (talk) 09:05, 29 January 2017 (UTC)

@Nipun 2002: Images can generate havoc with formatting. Change the browser width and chaos ensues. I'll leave it up to you. I would suggest removing the "350px" per image policy wp:images (or something around there) Cheers Jim1138 (talk) 09:08, 29 January 2017 (UTC)

@Jim1138: Hey there! I'll keep it as it is. Well, you removed the 350 pixel attribute for me from the image. No worries. Thanks :) Nipun 2002 (talk) 09:43, 29 January 2017 (UTC)

@Nipun 2002: I understand, but have not experienced, that setting the image can cause problems for some browsers. Especially mobile. Thanks for your work! Cheers Jim1138 (talk) 09:48, 29 January 2017 (UTC)

Independent clause

Hi, I noticed you reverted my edit at Independent clause and pointed out my edit was disruptive on my talk page. I was wondering why you felt my edit was disruptive. 99.252.156.13 (talk) 03:25, 30 January 2017 (UTC)

Question

Hi, I'm wondering if you know what the protocol is if you suspect one editor is using multiple IP addresses to edit the same articles. I've read over Wikipedia:Sock puppetry and it seems to deal more with named accounts rather than IP addresses. I think that all of these IP addresses are being used by the same person:

I left messages requesting this user to register an account, but I haven't received a response. These generally seem like good faith and productive edits, but it concerns me that one individual appears to be using multiple accounts. Thanks for any thoughts you may have. Marquardtika (talk) 16:24, 30 January 2017 (UTC)

@Marquardtika: Some IPs are more dynamic than others. Might be using a coffee shop or other public wifi. The red flag is when the IP is blocked and then edits with another IP. That would be grounds for a range block or wp:DENY Another block-worthy issue is the IP impersonating multiple people to sway opinion on AfDs or talk pages. At first glance, it appears that IP list is editing entirely different articles. I don't see any obvious problem. None have block history. Any other problems that you see with these IPs? (BTW: if you use {{userlinks|205.251.68.91}} That will list most info). Cheers Jim1138 (talk) 21:28, 30 January 2017 (UTC)
Got it, thanks! And thanks also for the userlinks tip. Marquardtika (talk) 21:31, 30 January 2017 (UTC)

Windows 10 version history

Hi.

In response to your message, I have not removed content from the Windows 10 Version History page. I have switched the changelogs from paragraph to bullet-point format, as many users find it easier to find a certain feature.

After seeing the multiple mentions of "copyright violation" and plagiarism on the Windows 10 Version History talk page, I have browsed through the Windows 10 Insider blog, and listed new features in my own words.

Adding helpful content is what Wikipedia is about, and without the list of features, the page is worthless.

Bacon's cipher reversion

Hello, I recently made an edit to the Bacon's cipher page. In the 'Baconian cipher example' section the sentence "To encode a message each letter of the plaintext is replaced by a group of five of the letters 'A' or 'B'." is supposed to be part italicised such that it encodes the word 'steganography'. I.e. To encode a message each letter of the plaintext is replaced by a group of five of the letters 'A' or 'B'. If you don't mind, I'll revert your edit so that this the case. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 139.143.37.47 (talk) 10:38, 31 January 2017 (UTC)

Hi Jim,

I'm still getting the hang of how to provide sources and I have a lot of knowledge of Cole from one of his dancers Matt Mattox and from the booK UNSUNG GENIUS.

Is it because I deleted the term "dance-training workshop"? I apologize if this is the case, however, those dancers were under contract and they were paid $125 a week (which was a lot back then) so I find the term inaccurate when trying to understand the dance industry in this day and age. I think it's an important distinction too. If you get paid it's called a "company" and hundreds of dance schools (including DANCE MOMS Abby-Lee are calling their student groups a "dance company"!!!

Peace. I didn't mean any harm,

Best,

Your deletion of my edits o the Port Moresby page

Hello Jim

I would be grateful if you could clarify what you want me to reference. For instance, I removed the typical white slag of Sir Michael Somare, which provided no source for the statement that the mansion offered him was not as mansionous as he preferred -- my memory is that he told the Australians that as PM of the country, he would make the decision about where and how he lived, not them, a perfectly justified position in my view. Are there other national leaders referred to in Wikipedia so disrespectfully? So where is the source for that and how come it is allowed to remain unedited?

There never was a "Territory of Papua and New Guinea" except as an administrative instrument -- Papua remained Australian territory until the day of independence, and New Guinea remained United Nations Trust Territory until the day of independence. Their merging into one occurred at independence when the nation of Papua New Guinea was born.

I was there, a working journalist at the time. 1963-77. Now I am back. 2010-?

I despaired of the last section; thought I would give it some work some time in the future. The biggest single sport doesn't really get a mention, Rugby League, which references the NRL in Australia. It is so big that Austrlian NRL stars are used in health and road safety promotions. Soccer used to be big but it has dwindled on the vine; cricket was never more than a Papuan aberration. The United States didn't form an oil company, for God's sake, Esso came in.

the head office of PNG Air gets a mention -- no argument with that -- but it is the small brother. Where is big brother in airline terms, Air Niugini, with domestic flights all over and lots of international destinations? Come on, mate!!!

So all this unsourced and sometimes where rubbish remains, but my knowledgeable additions get scrubbed?

I would like to see some justification for this.

Yes, edit is correct

Hi Jim,

Mark Goodley/david ben pesach

The edit is factually correct... and very well known since the Dead Sea Scrolls were published. The percentages cited, documents, etc. are all public.

....Unless you want to cite and use the entire Old and New Testaments for further evidence...

If you look at what is written, I don't think anything is controversial in any way.

... unless you want to consider the Pope's position, but he and it are on record, TV, etc...

Best,

markdg — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.169.224.92 (talk) 00:17, 3 February 2017 (UTC)

This was largely believed until the Dead Sea Scrolls (50BCE-200 AD) were discovered and translated, revealing a very different story. 95% of all scroll writing is in Hebrew, including most all "daily" documents including land transfers, sales, material purchases, etc. Only (approx.) 3% of discovered Dead Sea writings are in Aramaic, supposedly those written to gentiles/pagans. 2% were written in Greek, which makes perfect sense as they had been there for 300 years. The Aramaic first came around 730 BC but wasn't understood by Jews until much later (Is 35). (The Romans only came to Judea around 60 BC under Pompei). It is now very clear that the spoken and written daily language of Jews was Hebrew, Not Aramaic. For further evidence and clarification look at the surprising examples from the New Testament, the many examples of Jesus. For example. At the Transfiguration, Jesus Spoke to Moses And Elijah... only one possibility exists, and it's Hebrew not Aramaic. Jesus Spoke and read Isaiah in/at The Temple and Galilee synagogues... and all the people listened And understood... again, only one possibility, Hebrew, Not Aramaic. The minted coins were all in Hebrew, not Aramaic. The people cried out Hosanna, Hebrew, not Aramaic...Paul said that Jesus spoke to him in Hebrew, not Aramaic. So despite Pope Francis's denial that Jesus spoke Hebrew (only Aramaic), there are many many examples to easily prove this belief false. In fact, the evidence strongly suggests that it is very likely that most educated people spoke multiple languages fluently, much like the majority of Europe today. It is commonly excepted that Saul/Paul spoke and wrote in Hebrew, Greek, Aramaic, Syriac, and probably some Latin as well. The evidence and 1st century witnesses state that many of the books of the New Testament were originally written in Hebrew such as Matthew, Hebrews, and Revelations. These "originals" have been lost, likely/probably due to the Temple destruction and deportations of 70 and 132 AD...

Hi Jim,

Greetings;

mark d goodley/david ben pesach

please note my prior reply...

ie/Everything written is either common knowledge (New and Old Testaments) or public domain. The percentages, documents, etc. for example have all been in the public domain for decades....with many books on the topic.

The only possible "rustled feathers" might be the Pope's position... but it was made on world wide TV and cannot hardly be disputed.

I am somewhat new to Wikipedia, but saw the obvious lack of information and aged position...

But you know what? Galileo walked up a tower and dropped two balls, forever disproving 2,000 years of teaching, "knowledge", and belief... but you know what the schools continued to teach for 150 years thereafter?

Your call

Gravity's Rainbow

I won't both adding the sources for the Gravity's Rainbow genres, because it's kind of silly to have citations for some and not for others. (Should we add a cite to prove it's a "historical novel" next?) But if I were to add them, I would demonstrate Slipstream by pointing here: https://w2.eff.org/Misc/Publications/Bruce_Sterling/Catscan_columns/catscan.05 and demonstrate science fiction by pointing...well, maybe immediately to the left, where the entry notes that the book was nominated for a Nebula Award.173.64.74.153 (talk) 05:40, 3 February 2017 (UTC)

Elliott Blackstone

This is my Grandfather and we've tried several times to get his information corrected. One being his birth place. Wikipedia has my great grandfather death place as my grandfather's birth place. My grandfather father Elliott R. Blackstone was born in Aurora, Kane, Illinois, on October 30, 1948. He was a great man and I think his details should be corrected. Especially now that the Compton Riot area that he work with is becoming the first district of it kind in the nation. So I would appreciate to making these corrections. I thought me saying I was fixing my grandfather birth place was adequate enough and if my name is on there it needs to be with the last name Blackstone. Ty ahead of time... Ok i am hating this mailing system here. And it's horrible trying to make the simplest of changes. Though it says he grew up there it never states he was born there. As I have heard it from his own lips plus I have our lineage chart going back over 300 yrs that I know of, I would tend to think i know the truth. Especially since for the for the first couple of years Wikipedia didn't even have his named spelled correctly. And since I do talks and activist work in his honor along with my daughter, I know more about him then you will ever know. So if you could just assist me in making the changes properly i would be very greatful. And I'll leave you to do what you know and get back to what I know to do... 07:52, 3 February 2017 (UTC)Sabrina Blackstone (talk)

@A Lot: I don't think there is an "official" WWW logo. Please enlighten me on such a logo. Thank you Jim1138 (talk) 09:49, 3 February 2017 (UTC)

@Jim1138: Yes It doesn't exist an official logo, we can say that I am trying to make one.

The logo it is a visual synthesis of the power of the world wide web. I used the triangle that represents the number three, that it is the creation. It is also the number of the famous "WWW". Into the triangle there is the world connected by the internet. I used a silver background because it reminds to the machines that create the connections and store the data. The outlines are thick to create a better legibility in small reproductions. This is briefly the explanation of the logo. Should I put it in the World Wide page?A Lot (talk) 10:29, 3 February 2017 (UTC)

@A Lot: Per wp:verifiability, there needs to be a wp:reliable source stating that it is the official logo. Otherwise, probably not. Sorry. If you want to ask further, please ask at the wp:teahouse. Cheers Jim1138 (talk) 10:31, 3 February 2017 (UTC)

However, I have noticed someone keeps changing the February 2017 poll numbers. If you click the number source link for Feb 2017, it says AAP 63 Inc 43 SAD 11. Someone keeps making it Inc 73 Aap 33 SAD 11. But this is no where on the website. You can navigate the source on your own: http://www.huffingtonpost.in/2017/02/02/huffpost-cvoter-pre-poll-survey-aam-aadmi-party-set-to-win-punj/?utm_hp_ref=in-homepage Punjab is a region in Asia that has been ruled by an oligarchy of two parties whose relatives are intermarried, the Inc and Sad. Every 5 years either one alternates. They play ethnic divisions to divide us, such as different taxes and tuition fees depending on your ethnicity. The new AAP is standing for equality, no more ethnic vs ethnic, it will be poor vs rich. They stand for e-governance (the old parties have been known to steal a lot of funds), and AAP wants to make the budget accessible online, so people can see where the money goes. If you could please monitor people putting incorrect numbers for AAP, which has already won here in Punjab, is leading in exit polls. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.71.199.60 (talk) 09:14, 4 February 2017 (UTC)

Varicocele

There needs to be an emphasis that there are alternative methods for helping with varicocele infertility, pain, anxiety, etc. There is a considerable amount of scientific evidence for this. Michael Jeter

@Jim1138: Thanks for your note. I am not a prolific editor on Wikipedia, but I have been making edits, from time to time, for many years, certainly over a decade.

One of the many good things about Wikipedia is that there is no single arbiter of what information is useful. Granted, things can fall into disarray if nobody ever reverts anyone else's edits, but I would advise restraint when taking such actions. The fact that a phrase is not written the way that you would write it (or the fact that it exists at all) is not necessarily grounds for you to remove it.

It is not uncommon for artists who have won top awards in multiple discplines (Oscar/Grammy/Tony/Emmy, mostly) to be referred to as "Tony and Emmy Award-winning." Mr Jeter's Tony award was an enormous accomplishment in his career and, to the extent that the Emmy is mentioned in his introduction, it makes sense that the Tony would be mentioned there as well. You could also argue that his awards might not be mentioned at all, but as you know, there are a variety of editorial styles represented on Wikipedia in this regard. Editorial styles are subjective, of course.

Just as I was entitled to change the page in a way that seemed, to me, to be useful, you are certainly entitled to change the page in a way that you believe makes the page even better. But to simply revert an edit, because you would not have made that particular edit... that goes beyond what I think it reasonable oversight. It discourages community participation in the project. Perhaps that is your goal. But it has been the effect. I am now less likely to throw in my extremely-occasional two cents next time I see information that I think might be useful.

Oh, and I realize "If you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox" is just boilerplate, but obviously what I was doing was not experimentation. It was a perfectly reasonable, good-faith edit. And that sentence is a bit patronizing. I don't edit much, but I do know the difference between a real edit and playing around.

In the end, I suppose the ultimate "winner" of this dispute will be whichever of us has more stamina to argue about what is and is not a constructive edit to the late Michael Jeter's page. And I suspect you will come out on top there. So... knock yourself out. These paragraphs of thoughts are probably more involved than I should have gotten. @ReadParse: The odd thing I noticed was that here you changed Butt Nine (play) to Butt Nine (play) which is a wp:redlink. I tried various Google searches and without finding any play. Is there a Butt Nine play? Was this intentional or an accident? Cheers Jim1138 (talk) 21:33, 30 January 2017 (UTC)
@Jim1138: Well that's embarrassing. It turns out that your problem was not with my legitimate edit, but with one that was unintentional. Yowsa. OK, I'll explain. I have this "Butt-to-butt" Chrome extension, which replaces all occurrences of "butt" to "butt", and all occurrences of "my butt" to "my butt". "Butt" is so overused that it's really funny, but it seems that it even happened in the article content that I was editing. So, like I said... super embarrassing. And it reveals that I didn't even preview my change, which is a problem. Ugh, so embarrassing. If you can't tell, I was having a bad day yesterday. Sorry about that. ReadParse (talk) 20:14, 31 January 2017 (UTC)
@ReadParse: Did it do it again to your edit here? I cant tell the difference. No problem, I've made lots of errors in my history. BTW: No need to do yo on someone's own talk page, it's automatic. Cheers Jim1138 (talk) 22:12, 31 January 2017 (UTC)
Yeah, it did it again :) So I turned off the extension just now, so it will leave my post alone. Here's what I wrote: Well that's embarrassing. Espresso Martini

The 'gentleman' in question that is on the other end of this 'war' as you call it has been told that he is vandalizing. And, apparently, he doesn't care. The drink is an IBA drink, the cocktail box template clearly states that such should only use the IBA ingredients, which would include amounts, and the IBA recipe clearly states 'short espresso', nothing else. But, it apparently amuses this person to vandalize specific pages, such as the martini one and the Steuben Glass Works.85.229.51.18 (talk) 13:41, 5 February 2017 (UTC)

I only reverted you as you didn't leave an explanation and I could not see any obvious reason (such as vandalism or erroneous content). It appears that you removed this content before and were reverted. You might want to go through wp:policy and wp:manual of style to get an idea what the content of the page should be. In the case of Ebola, a cytokine storm can be thought of as an SOS signal which causes the immune system to launch all of its weapons at once in a desperate kamikaze attack. While this hurts the virus it also leaves behind tons of collateral damage, especially in the blood vessels. Paradoxically, the healthier the immune system the more damage it can do to itself. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.181.33.57 (talk) 05:38, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

Jon F. Vein

Hi Jim1138. This reversion at Jon F. Vein [6] wasn't made because of an unwillingness to sort through content. To the contrary, I, and to a lesser extent another account, spent some time plucking the unsourced and public relations-style content from the article; I was merely reverting to the last decent version. I write this because I don't want to give the COI account the impression that this is done haphazardly. I've started a discussion at the COI noticeboard. I am a member of the Tuna Canyon Detention Station Board and its primary historian, and I have been researching this camp for the past three years, including several trips to the National Archives. I won't leave my name here (a public forum), but if you go to the Tuna Canyon website (www.tunacanyon.org) you will be able to guess who I am.

My changes to the Port Moresby entry

@Jim1138: Thursday, 09 February 2017

Hello Jim

You have not replied to my reply to you regarding the changes I made to the Port Moresby entry.

I was shocked when I read that entry, replete as it is with biased statements and a racist undertone -- practically an overtone. NOT what I expect from Wikipedia.

You asked for citations. In respect of stuff surrounding Independence, I was there, Jim, and I was reporting on it daily as an editor at the NBC. I was writing stuff that people cite.

In respect of Port Moresby today, as a resident of Papua New Guinea again, now living in Kokopo in the islands, I am a frequent visitor to Port Moresby.

In respect of the matter of the Papuan carriers -- the sources are many which I have read over many years. Further, back in the day (the 70s), I talked with survivors. They were press-ganged. Many died of starvation, disease, cold. But they kept the Australian troops alive -- who were also dying of starvation, disease, and cold, along with Japanese bullets and grenades and stuff.

The nature of their recruitment and reward are a perpetual shame to Australia, the nature of their service has only fairly recently been publicly acknowledged with a memorial near Koki, Port Moresby. Still nothing has been made for them alongside those who served in uniform at Bomana War Cemetery (Bomana means "brother" -- well, WTF does a bro do better than die supporting you in a life and death struggle?).

Try reading [1] by Peter Brune. He gives a pretty good round up of the situation.

An author from the nation that had a whole shipload of well paid troops who refused to fight at Buna and Gona is not well placed to slag others pressed into service with a few shillings as their non-negotiable pay -- of they lived long enough to collect it.
