Same Sex marriage

Thanks for your view that my proposed amendments to the same sex marriage page were not balanced.

In fact, I think the page is in places cryptic, factually questionable and skewed in favor of SSM.

For example, the topic sentence in paragraph 2, states that “In the late 20th century, religious rites of marriage without legal recognition became increasingly common.” What does this mean? (Unnamed) churches were marrying (unnamed groups of) people (ie, same sex or otherwise) outside the law? The sentence is open to a variety of interpretations, and lacks citation.

The paragraph goes on to list countries which have legalised SSM, and countries where it is said (based, in Australia’s case) on a two year old newspaper poll (2014) and advice from “Australian Marriage Equality Inc” in 2015 which rehashes even older reports.

The negative side is treated somewhat dismissively with “However, as of 2016 South Africa is the only African country where same-sex marriage is recognized, and although no country in Asia allows same-sex marriage ceremonies…”

In the next paragraph the following statements are made:

"Same-sex marriage can provide those in same-sex relationships who pay their taxes with government services and make financial demands on them comparable to those afforded to and required of those in opposite-sex marriages". Apart from being confusingly written, I assume this statement is made by proponents of SSM - and is not as implied a statement of fact.

"Same-sex marriage also gives them legal protections such as inheritance and hospital visitation rights." Another apparent statement of fact: we are invited to infer that this is not currently permitted. I don’t believe this to be the case – other than in individual cases where appropriate arrangements have not been made.

"Opponents of same-sex marriages have argued that recognition of same-sex marriages would erode religious freedoms, undermine a right of children to be raised by their biological mother and father or erode the institution of marriage itself." I can't help but point out the imbalance between the preceding statements in the paragraph - that are stated as fact (AND supported by LGBT references - hardly balaced! - in some places) - the other side of the SSM discussion is by “opponents”. It actually misstates the objections to SSM (eg, it should not refer to “their biological mother and father” but rather to “a mother (female) and father (male) role model”. It also omits other objections raised by opponents.

I could go on sentence by sentence and clause by clause, but having pointed out the manifest shortcomings in the introduction, I won’t belabour the point.

A couple of closing comments.

First, the treatment of Ancient and Medieval History was simply appalling – just utter rubbish! I didn’t bother going to the Contemporary.

Second, the Other legally recognized same-sex unions is buried near the bottom of the discussion. The proponents of SSM (who obviously drafted the article) wanted it buried.

Finally, I won’t go nation-by-nation, through the skewed discussion of each countries position on SSM, other than to draw attention to the stark imbalance in the treatment of Bermuda (discussed above – which didn’t count because there were not enough votes) and the total distortion of the Irish referendum where, Wikipedia states, “The proposal was overwhelmingly approved and endorsed by the People with 62% of the vote”. Setting aside all other questions about the vote, it is a fact that the so-called “62% of the vote” represented 25% of the Irish population. Hardly an overwhelming endorsement, but spun to look like it!

In short, this is an article that appears to have been written by the LGBT etc community with citations from LGBT etc sources. On the basis that you have deleted the modest and factual amendments I have proposed, suggests to me that you are almost certainly of that community.

Hi Jim1138! It's good to run into you again and say hi! I just wanted to give you a heads up regarding Draft:PKD Nambiar. It came into my RC patrolling goggles (lol) when an IP removed the A7 tag you placed on it. I added a dummy edit to state that it should be removed; the article is a draft and the tag was placed only one minute after it was created. I just wanted to let you know; drafts obviously don't get A7 tags, and (even if not a draft) so soon after being created. Entry - Rolfing

Sorry Jim, but,

I edited the Rolfing page because it came across as biased. In the nature of an encyclopedia, it seems wrong to use words such as "quackery." I seriously hope that you were being honest in saying that there was a discussion going on, though with your insanely quick revisions and re-use of the words "quackery" and "pseudoscience," I'm sure the bias will continue. I personally have received Rolfing and am a mostly logical and rational person, thus my being offended at reading such a biased opinion. When I read the entry, it truly felt like the author had a schoolyard vendetta against the profession. Color me not surprised that while attending university I was unable to cite Wikipedia for anything. I remember wishing things were not that way. With all of this information out there that seemed credible (minus opinion pieces such as this entry and I'm sure other ones), it seemed a waste to not be able to trust the info as fact, even though I knew that some of it in fact was.

When I edited the Rolfing page I honestly did my best to keep it neutral, regardless of Wikipedia's definition of said "neutral." As actual humans, I think we know what is and isn't neutral. Anyway, hopefully the discussion goes well and editors make more responsible and unbiased decisions. The unfortunate part of all of this now, is that I can't help but be on the lookout for this type of thing, rather than casually browsing a large collection of information and trusting it.

Please tell whomever got broken up with by a Rolfer, or whatever bad situation went down, that not all Rolfers are quacks, and that they probably aren't too happy with being called a pseudoscience. I don't know what claims they have all made, or collectively made, but I do know that when nothing else worked for me, when I had a host of undiagnosed problems, that large expensive medical equipment could not help me to figure out, Rolfing went for the throat, and my headache of ten years, chronic lower lateral leg pain, and chronic lower back pain were put to rest.

Hope I don't come across as a jerk, but this just seems like a weird problem, maybe even systemic. Mhmmhmyesplease (talk) 14:17, 4 August 2016 (UTC)

There is indeed a long-drawn-out, overly-contentious discussion on the matter: talk:Rolfing. Also, check into archives As to Rolfing being safe and effective as well as pseudoscientific, quackery, and wp:fringe, I would suggest reading the article and wp:Identifying reliable sources (medicine). Cupping Therapy

I invoke the principles and/or tenets of this site Wikipedia (ie. open source and freedom of speech). I will not be intimidated by your rather hasty and premature threat to block editing.

Use proper Asian/Chinese term for so called cupping therapy. This corrupted and despicable term has now got on with Western media. The media hasn't even bothered with using the correct term. hey. is there a Grimes(musician)/ claire boucher wikiproject page by chance? the edit I made was in reference to the fact that citing any drug as a key source of inspiration in regards to amazing producers may misdirect young aspiring composers to assume drug abuse as a source of inspiration. "(...amphetamines as a key source of inspiration.[citation needed] "I don’t want [hard drug use] to be part of my narrative," she said.[78][79])" Ironic how this sentence in the wikipedia page makes amphetamines a part of her narrative, after explicitly stating the opposite. My personal opinion which may not be shared by Grimes(musician) is that the list of sources of inspiration is endless, citing amphetamines is not only detrimental to people who look up to her as well as her image but also disrespectful by implying that without the alleged prescription abuse (probably torn out of context) production or creation of this audio-visual project would be impossible. this link (huffingtonpost)] is an article I found which seems to better portray some of the possible sources of inspiration/irritation and/or personal views. Basically substance abuse is something that should never have any credit especially to sum up personal achievements and/or inspiration. You can use a wp:Request for comments (RfC) on Talk:Grimes (musician) to address your concerns and get others' opinions on the matter. However, a big (sometimes abused) Wikipedia policy is WP:NOTCENSORED. There is still wp:NPOV specifically wp:DUE and wp:BLP policy that may be pertinent. I doubt anyone will read the article and start using drugs. It does show that drugs, like many things, are a double-edged sword. As such, I see few issues with that portion of the article. Michael Hayden (general)

Hi, Jim1138, Yes, you did make a mistake by removing my edit of General Hayden's page. His political affiliation is Independent, not Republican. I know this because I have known him for many years and he has told me so. We have had many personal conversations about politics over the years. Hard to cite them. HoweverI did cite a source, a semi-private NMIA book event on August 10th where he spoke about his book and said that he has never registered as a Republican.

Honestly, it is no skin off my nose if there is no political affiliation in his Wikipedia bio. I just found it annoying to see it listed as Republican when I know that to be untrue.

Blanket reversion of my edit to Texas Longhorns Football page

I'd really like to hear an explanation of why you reverted my edits to the Texas Longhorns football page. Please note that leaving me a form message implying that I either don't know what I'm doing or am a vandal is not appreciated. I removed statistics that don't belong in in a "rivalries" section. Being conference opponents and have a rivalry is not the same thing. If you think these are all rivalries, I would insist you find actually sources discussing them as such. Furthermore, I would like to point out that the "Chisholm Trail Rivalry" is actually a joke that Kansas State fans made up to make fun of Texas fans - google it if you don't believe me. That is vandalism.

My full edit summary stated rm link to non-existent page and statistics for non-existent rivalries that are cluttering the page, which is exactly what I did. I removed a hyperlink which, as displayed to the reader, said For additional information see the Texas Longhorns rivalries page, which I felt was superfluous because it just pointed to a subsection slightly further down the current page, inside the rivalry section. There was no Texas Longhorns rivalries page. Furthermore, you reverted the entire edit in which I removed unsourced "rivalries" (one of which is literally a joke made by Kansas State fans at the expense of Longhorns fans, and not the true name of a rivalry) without providing sources for anything. 184.5.41.106 (talk) 23:38, 16 August 2016 (UTC)

The link you removed is to Texas Longhorns#Rivalries which is not on the Texas Longhorns football page. It is a working link and not a "non-existent page". I spent some time trying to figure out what the "non-existent page" was. Wouldn't you be annoyed by something like that and would you want to spend time trying to figure out if the rest of the edit summary were true or not? If the other stuff is a joke, please remove it. LGBT demographics in the US

I hope you can reconsider your reversal of your edits. As you can see if you look more closely, no content has been removed from the entry - it's just that some results (those of the General Social Survey) have been condensed into a table, so readers can see more easily how the percentages of self-identified LGB people have changed over time. Haines, AK

Jim,

As far as I can tell the all-time record low for Haines, AK is -16F on February 2, 1947. You can see this reading if you click on the link already provided on the Haines wiki page (reference #6 with an external link to the Western Regional Climate Center). Its under "Daily Summary Stats" which shows the record high and low for each calendar date. The monthly extremes table you're referring to only covers 1973-2012, whereas official weather observations in Haines began in 1911. If you look at the daily summary stats you'll see several suspicious readings from January 1998 as well, with a low of -18F. Those readings look more like data input error to me so I'm disregarding them in favor of the February 1947 reading. The January 1998 cold wave wasn't extreme enough to produce those kinds of readings, whereas the February 1947 cold wave was one of the greatest in Alaskan history. This is the same cold wave which produced the North American record low of -81F at Snag, Yukon, as well as all-time record lows of -38F in Anchorage and -24F in Skagway (which is in close proximity to Haines). In other words, a reading of -16F for Haines would make sense in February 1947 but wouldn't make any sense in January 1998, given the weather patterns in Alaska during those particular months. The WRCC is unfortunately full of errors and missing data and you sometimes need to play detective if you want to determine what the real records are.

Adding references is how we ensure that content is valid. Without references, a reader can not easily validate information and there is no presumption of accuracy. See Help:Referencing for beginners and Help:footnotes. If you can find a reliable source, please do update the record.

Unfortunately, many change numbers in articles for the pleasure of vandalism. So, wp:verifiability is rather critical here.

My grandfather was monitoring a chinook wind in Newell, South Dakota near Spearfish, South Dakota in 1943. He said the temperature rise was almost 80°F, significantly higher than the record of 49°F as reported in Spearfish, South Dakota#World record temperature change. I would love to add that. The content is already unsourced and you reverted it when I tried to remove the unsourced content. I don't know of a source which says exactly what I wrote, but many scientists believe aging can be cured within the next century at least, and there are a lot of ideas on how it might be done and it is being actively worked on by a number of companies and research institutes like Calico, SENS Research Foundation, Human Longevity Inc. and BioViva. The Mike, Lu, and Og edit

The deletion of the episode at the bottom of the "Episode" section, titled "Goodbye Mike", has no basis on reality that I could find online. In fact, the only thing called "Goodbye Mike" that has to do with the show is in fact a Creepypasta about a lost episode. That page isn't for creepy pastas about the show, but about the show itself. Hi. I am looking at the content you restored to Krista K (diff) and trying to understand why you might think that any of it was good enough to bring back. The first part is mostly incorrect infobox parameters that don't work. Then there is some of the the most blatant puffery I have seen on Wikipedia (which is clearly either copied from a fan site or simply written by a fan) and finally a "fun facts" section which is simply not appropriate content for Wikipedia (and also reeks of being copied from a fan site). So I removed it all again. If you are convinced that there is anything legitimate in it (and I am not) please be much more selective about which parts you bring back and make sure to rewrite it neutral tone. Hi, having noticed your reverts of the previous edits to this article by User:2a02:c7d:dc08:8400:e172:2a32:158:a3f4, and examined his edits, all he is trying to do is update the kits in the infobox to the correct, current kits. May I suggest that rather than reverting due to lack of a source, perhaps either assist him in this change or direct him to his sandbox until he has perfected the change. A quick look at various other premier league club pages show that references are generally not required alongside the kits in infoboxes, however the everton fc website will confirm they are correct and needed changes, and is clearly a reliable source. I would assist myself, however due to work and other commitments, as well as inexperience in using colours on wiki, I would more than likely just screw it up completely. Uploading and referencing

Hi Jim

I am a bit stuck.I uploaded an NHTSA manual to WikiCommons. It was on the NHTSA web site and seems to be a document the NHTSA want to make public, I am not sure if it was correct to upload to Commons or even Wikipedia. I have the Commons URL for the document. I now want to add it to the Lidar article references, but for the life of me I cannot get it to look half decent. Can you give me a hint. I am using Visual Editor and a Mac desktop.

One of the things that seems to be a big deal in radar and lidar is cosine error. I have mentioned in the lidar article. The best way to reference it is to write a WP article on cosine error and link to it. So when I have polished off the lidar article (or someone else does, but I don't see anyone putting up their hand), I think I should write a new article on cosine error. To do that I am going to need to draw a bunch of diagrams, so learning that from the WP help articles is going to be a big treat!
