VisualEditor newsletter for 06 August 2013

It's been almost two weeks since the last newsletter, and a lot of improvements have been made during that time. The main things that people have noticed are significant improvements to speed for typing into long pages (T54012), scrolling (T54014) and deleting (T54013) on large pages. There have also been improvements to references, with the latest being support for list-defined references, which are <ref>s defined inside a <references> block (T53741). Users of Opera 12 and higher have had their web browser removed from the browser black-list, mostly as a result of work by a volunteer developer (T38000). Opera has not been fully white-listed yet, so these users will get an additional warning and request to report problems.

Significant changes were made to the user interface to de-emphasize VisualEditor. This has cut the use of VisualEditor by approximately one-third. You can read about these at Wikipedia:VisualEditor/Updates/August 1, 2013, but they include:

  • Re-ordering links to the editors to put "Edit source" first and VisualEditor second
  • Renaming the link for VisualEditor to "Editbeta"
  • Disabling the animation for section editing.
  • Changing all labels for the classic wikitext editor to say "Edit source", regardless of namespace.

There have also been many smaller fixes, including these:

  • Horizontal alignment of images working correctly on more pages (T53995)
  • Categories with ':'s in their names (like Category:Wikipedia:Privacy) now work correctly (T53902)
  • Magic JavaScript gadgets and tools like sortable tables will now work once the page is saved (T53565)
  • Keyboard shortcut for "clear annotations" - now Control+\ or ⌘ Command+\ (T53507)
  • Fixed corruption bugs that led to duplicate categories (T54238) and improper collapsing when multiple new references were added in a row (T54228).
  • Improvements to display elements: The save dialog in Monobook is restored to normal size (T52058), pop-up notices on save now look the same in VisualEditor as in wikitext editor (T41632), and the popup about using wikitext has a link to the definition of wikitext that now opens in a new window (T54093)

I have replaced the lengthy material originally written by Bob Rodger with a much more succinct entry (which is still located in my sandbox). You explained last time that you could not guarantee that even a shorter version would receive final approval, but if this looks initially acceptable to you, would you please transfer it to the location which will permit the evaluation process to begin on it. Your comments on WT:CSD

Because you made some comments that suggest you might be interested, the user who created some of these articles (who is now blocked for socking) is Nabil rais2008. He appears to me to be fond of taking skyscrapercity forum postings about dubai projects and turning them into articles. And as i stated at the csd page, i seem to be getting a lot of resistance by saying that "the sc forum is, per WP:UGC, does not qualify as RS", and this appears to be from editors who work on the skyscrapers wikiprojects, or those who submit a substantial number of AfCs. The Akka Wikipedia page

Hi.

Thanks for fixing the Akka logo. It is however not the right logo, since the colours are a bit inverted. Can you use this one instead? https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2211606/akka-logo.png

It says that the page is an orphan and that we should go around and add links to the page from other relevant pages, which we definitely can/want to do. But you also link to Conflict of Interest guidelines. I'm not sure what to do in order to not violate the guidelines. Please advise.

@Jonasboner: I'll take care of the image. Further clarification on its copyright status would be very welcome, we prefer not to make use of the fair-use doctrine if we can. I do understand you're busy building a (great) toolkit, and prefer not being busy as a lawyer (if you do come around to it, though this is completely irrelevant to Wikipedia, it would be nice if the documentation was freely licensed as well).
As far as the conflict of interest guidelines go, that's a bit of a tough one, because different people have differing opinions on how we should deal with that. The spectrum roughly runs from people who believe anyone with a conflict of interest should stay away from editing anything related to 'their' subject, others think that people with a conflict of interest should do nothing but change false datapoints already present (like year founded, current version, that kind of stuff). Others still (me for example) believe that all is good as long as the edit is good. A pluriform community as is Wikipedia doesn't make for the clearest 'rules' on what to do. The best attitude to meet things with is to do what you feel is right yourself, and if you think that something may be, remotely, considered spamming, not to make the edit. If someone does revert your edits on grounds of it being considered spammy and you disagree with the assertion you can briefly engage on the articles talk page, and if you are met with much resistance, walk away, even if you think a change or addition is perfectly fine and you believe the other party is blatantly wrong.
For the specific case of adding incoming links a good rule of thumb is probably that if the prose already mentions Akka, linking it is good (if there are multiple references in a single article, only link the first occurrence), and if you would want to add a link to Akka while it's not used on the page yet, request an edit on the articles talkpage. You can use the template {{request edit}} for that.
Lastly, if you need any further help, now or in the future, there are a couple of channels to get assistance. First, you can always ask me personally, I'm happy to help out. Other than that, there is also the teahouse which has fast and competent helpers (and possibly a slightly patronising tone) or you can ask for help by placing the {{help me}} template on your talk page, which will get you attention from someone fairly quickly (generally, though not always, within an hour or two). Other than that, there is a general channel for the English Wikipedia on IRC freenode #wikipedia-en and a help channel at #wikipedia-en-help. The latter tends to get a lot of visitors from people with a conflict of interest who aren't always very graceful in handling that, and part of the helpers have developed somewhat of a trench mentality when it comes to conflicts of interest, so be aware of that. VisualEditor newsletter for 21 August 2013

Did you know? Parsoid is a tool that translates between the raw wikitext that Wikipedia articles are stored in, and the HTML/RDFa that VisualEditor uses on your screen. If you see chess pawn (♙) or snowman (☃) icons in an article, it usually means that Parsoid has encountered something confusing in the wikitext markup. Please report these problems to Wikipedia:VisualEditor/Feedback.

Both VisualEditor and MediaWiki were upgraded recently. For VisualEditor, this is the long-awaited post-Wikimania update with many bug fixes and enhancements. Work also continues on speed at opening and during use, as well as on the bugs reported here and at other Wikipedias. The full report is at Mediawiki.

References are displaying properly, even when nested (T52749) or in image captions (T2000. Reference lists are now always fully populated with references (bug 50094). Firefox users can insert an existing reference in the first paragraph (T54159). Opera users no longer see corruption of categories when a reference was added (bug 50385).

Stray spaces are being stripped from the start of paragraphs to end one of the common <nowiki> problems (T53462). We also fixed a round-tripping bug that caused desirable whitespace in templates (used to make templates more legible, e.g., by putting each parameter in an infobox on a separate line) to get corrupted (bug 51150).

Wikilink handling was improved. Users are not allowed to create internal links to invalid titles (titles that are actually impossible due to limits on acceptable character combinations in titles, not redlinks) (T35094). You can extend wikilinks, but it won't do so over a wordbreak (like a space) (bugs 49931 and 51463).

A handful of fixes to the user interface were made. The toolbar doesn't float over personal tools after opening a dialog or the inspector (T54441). Toolbars were also re-written to be collapsible/expandable, with room for more icons. Buttons in dialogs can now be activated using the Tab ↹ and ⇧ Shift+Tab ↹ key commands (bug 50047). This saves time for editors, because you don't need to take your hands off the keyboard to click a button. We fixed a handful of bugs that affected only certain articles or certain browsers, including toolbar buttons in Firefox (bug 51986) and dialog panels that didn't always scroll correctly (bug 51739). Bugs with undo/redo getting confused have been fixed (T54113).

Images, in addition to getting references displaying correctly, also saw improvements with a set-empty |link= parameter no longer corrupted (51963). We corrected thumbnail images' display so that they look don't wrong in some contexts (bug 51995). Inserted images no longer explicitly set their alignment, but instead inherit the default position in compliance with the Manual of Style (bug 51851).

More edit notices, warnings, and metadata like information about Pending Changes on an article now appear as appropriate (bug 49699). When new articles are created, users are now shown the <newarticletext> message (bug 51459). VisualEditor now handles templates that set "meta" items (like a category) and nothing else better (bug 51322). If the database is locked when a user tries to save with VisualEditor, they now get a message telling them as such and an opportunity to try again, rather than a silent failure (bug 51636).

When you save the page, having the default preference set to "mark all my edits as minor by default" no longer overrides the setting in the save dialog (bug 51515). If you open VisualEditor from a section edit link, the section's title will be pre-filled in in the edit summary box when you go to save it (bug 50872). The size of the save dialog box in the Monobook skin has been fixed (bug 50058). Also, wikipage content handlers like sortable tables are re-run automatically after saving (T53565).

A very early version of the mathematics equation editor is now available for testing on mw:Mediawiki. If you would like to help improve the user interface for math editor, please test out the extension at mw:Mediawiki:Sandbox and leave your comments directly at the discussion page for the Math Node User Interface at Mediawiki. You should be able to use your regular username and password should to login to Mediawiki.

Hi yuvalya, I declined the article because it is terribly promotional. When reading it, it even seems like you have a financial interest in the organisation. If you do, I ask you not to write about your own organisation, see also wp:COI. If you are not, well, consider for a moment that a reader like myself would think you do. Every part of the article has to be written for neutrality, but as an example I'd like to point to they boycott and controversy sections. They are both written in a way to demonstrate the boycott and people involved in the controversy are actually quite wrong to say or do what they do, and it seems this is based on original reasearch or synthesis which we do not allow on Wikipedia. Apart from that, I haven't at all looked at notability. Our criteria for inclusions for organisations can be found at WP:CORP. I don't know if the draft meets it or not, I haven't properly looked for it, but I don't want to give you the impression the promotional tone is the only reason it has been declined, and if that is solved the article is definitely accepted. Hi Martijn Hoestra,

I wanted to just address your last talk comment so that we are aligned. I did change the boycott section of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/Premier_Dead_Sea_Cosmetics following your last feedback. However what I am writing is fact. There are boycotts against Israeli companies located in the disputed territories. Premier is NOT located in these territories but in Israel proper. That said, the distinction is not correctly made and often, bodies or companies that are not located in the "disputed territories" but in Israel proper are bulked with those that are. One needs to simply open a map to see this but often they just get lost in the wave of unsubstantiated information.

Let me know if I have clarified.

Wikipedia is not for righting great wrongs. If you think you wrote a neutral, balanced article, I strongly urge you to go work in some other areas of Wikipedia first, before trying to create an article yourself. Come back to this question in about 6 months and 1000 edits. Not that this article will then be allowed, but at that point you will (probably, hopefully) have learned why this is not acceptable. Writing new articles is quite hard, and I would actually not advice anyone to start with that. I still have the feeling that you're not really here to help with the encyclopedia, but just to make sure the cosmetics company is included, so I fear you're not willing to do that. Deletion of page User:Wildeyedlad

Can you explain why you deleted the page User:Wildeyedlad? There is no justification given in the deletion log, although I understand you have also been editing the page for Compass Box for which I had previously drafted some content under my user page. Yes. The basis is that the two of you managed to make a discussion about the discussion at a move proposal (that has long been closed) the main subject of an RFC on how civilty should be handled. If it makes you feel any better, I was originally responding to Hilo, who has, in this instance, harped on about it more, and editconflicted with you. You keep engaging in it though, allowing the forest fire to burn on. I'm making an appeal to the both of you that it is probably better for everyone (including you, HiLo and the rest of the community) if you come to an understanding where you avoid each other to avoid flaring up conflict where it is not needed. I made one comment - aimed, if you read it, at suggesting a more civil path - and it certainly wasn't implying that HiLo was stupid. I'm sorry that you read it that way. It is a standard question within the school of which I am a member, and googling the phrase "what would a wise man/person do?" yields any number of thoughtful commentaries, such as this blog post or this short video. I didn't say you were saying that you were calling HiLo stupid, but it's not hard to see that the two of you aren't on the best of terms, that your disagreements aren't really progressing much, and that your disagreements are spanning multiple forums, that all turned in to a discussion where the two of you were accusing the other of one thing or another, and none of those places are good venues. At that point it is probably better to look for a different way of solving things, and taking things to WT:CIVIL is quite a bad place to try and handle it. If you want to accomplish change in the behavior of a specific user, the best order tends to be first try and talk to them, tell them what behavior is bothering you, and why it is affecting you, and asking them to stop. If you can't find agreement there for some reason or the other, take those specific points that you couldn't find agreement on, and bring them to RFC/U. The community tends to have some pretty good points (along with some pretty bad ones, but the thing about an RFC is that the best points float up by endorsements). When there is an outcome of the RFC/U, and the editor is not following the advice of the RFC, then AN/I might be appropriate, or maybe even ArbCom.
What I specifically hoped to accomplish on the talkpage with my above comment, is that the two of you would stop talking about what the other did on the soccer issue, which was really rather unrelated of changing the policy page on civility, and wasn't going anywhere constructive anyway.
