WikiCup Newsletter XXIII[edit]

Delivered by –Juliancolton | Talk 16:33, 5 July 2009 (UTC).[reply]

Congrats on the promotion, and on the soon-to-be featured topic. By the way, in the future, you can check the closure log to see what was promoted. Dabomb87 (talk) 16:42, 5 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A couple things[edit]

Thanks for keeping me informed of new pictures that you take. Meanwhile, I would like to let you know that there is an important poll at WT:ELG concerning how the junction list for roads with freeway and non-freeway segments should be constructed and whether or not colors should be permissible in junction/exit lists. We need more votes from USRD regulars, as well as CRWP and UKRD contributors, before we can close the poll. Since you are active with USRD, I figured to let you know of this poll. We could use your vote! Dough4872 (talk) 16:17, 6 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Woot! More power to you. - Denimadept (talk) 22:22, 6 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

NC Hwy 220[edit]

Thanks for your help ... I was hoping writing would feel like a break from policy, CSD and spam stuff, but it doesn't, it feels like work. I'll get back to NC Hwy 220 in a few days, after I've tied up some loose ends. - Dank (push to talk) 23:08, 7 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Re:RI 4[edit]

No offense taken, but my rewrite was not "horrible"; it was completely accurate and "clean" (it was not yet complete: I had planned to add references and information about the Quonset Freeway). Please don't take a rewrite personally; I was attempting to expand what you had already written. And, to be clear, I was working on expanding the article for days before you; neither of us have to "back off" to improve an article, because this isn't a competition. Cheers, Raime 22:25, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That would be great - it is about time a Rhode Island highway becomes a GA! ;) I just went through your route description and changed some information slightly; as a Rhode Island resident, I know some things about the highway that can't easily be distinguished by looking at a map (such as the Exit 7 interchange). I like what you did to the lead, but I still think it needs work. The information about the freeway upgade, for example, might be better served in the history section, with just a short mention in the lead. Cheers, Raime 22:38, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I assumed incorrectly given the route shield on your user page and your incorrect information regarding Exit 7. It isn't personal to discuss the Quonset Freeway as a freeway; it is fact. In addition, Exit 5 doesn't serve the Lafayette business district. And there should definitely be mention of Route 4 being used to access Newport; there are, after all, signs on I-95 for the Newport Bridge. Cheers, Raime 22:43, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I just noticed that the RIGIS link used the reference the highway's length and mileposts is a dead link. Do you know of any replacement reference? The RIDOT website seems to only cover the exits and mileposts of the three RI Interstates. Cheers, Raime 22:58, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Email[edit]

Yes, I got it (I've been very busy offline this week ... I'll go into more detail when I respond, hopefully later tonight). Daniel Case (talk) 01:09, 11 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Panel A-2 (outreach)[edit]

I started a discussion about the proposed WM-NYC outreach panel that you signed up for here. Thanks! -- phoebe / (talk to me) 21:06, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

NJ GAN's[edit]

I would like to continue getting articles about NJ routes to GA, but you did bring up a good point about the backlogs at GAN and MTF. So, what should I do now with the NJ articles? On another note, I would appreicate it if you could possibly review some of my GANs since I helped review yours. I have had articles sitting there for over two months. Dough4872 (talk) 00:08, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Good news, the MTF backlog has been reduced. Still need the GAN backlog to be cut. Dough4872 (talk) 17:03, 20 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
No rush, we'll get the pictures whenever. If I am in the Garden State, I will try to get some pictues too. Dough4872 (talk) 17:13, 20 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I live in PA, but fairly close to the NJ border. Despite that, I do not go there too frequently. Dough4872 (talk) 17:15, 20 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup participates in the Wikipedia:The Great Wikipedia Dramaout[edit]

Hello all, iMatthew here. I just wanted to let you know about "The Great Wikipedia Dramaout" which starts this Saturday. The goal of the Dramaout is to spend five days working on improving articles and abstaining from any of Wikipedia's drama. I don't think that any of you will have a problem focusing on articles for five days, because of course, any work you get done during the Dramaout will count towards your score in the WikiCup. Details are on the page; hope to see you all signing up! :) iMatthew talk at 00:27, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to provide further input on desysop proposal[edit]

As someone who commented either for or against proposals here, I would like to invite you to comment further on the desysop process proposal and suggest amendments before I move the proposal into projectspace for wider scrutiny and a discussion on adoption. The other ideas proposed on the page were rejected, and if you are uninterested in commenting on the desysop proposal I understand of course. Thanks! → ROUX  04:28, 20 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Why not either make a gallery or use a Commons pointer? Regardless, this page needs layout work. - Denimadept (talk) 16:41, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Image galleries are disallowed now, and well, Commons has images - There are way too many in there anyway. Mitch/HC32 16:43, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Image galleries are disallowed??! When'd that happen? Can you point me where to look? - Denimadept (talk) 16:45, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Let's keep the discussion here, please.
Thanks. Okay, I see what they mean. I can think of one use I've made of "gallery" which fits that bill, at Harvard Bridge. I'm going to have to revise other articles to comply. - Denimadept (talk) 16:57, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Storage bridge in Whitehall, New York[edit]

You really ought to find a way to add this image to the article on Whitehall, New York somehow. This is quite a sight. Was this a railroad bridge or a road bridge first? ----DanTD (talk) 03:25, 23 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

New Jersey pics[edit]

I was in New Jersey today and got a picture of CR 513 as well as three pictures of US 46. I will upload them to Commons when I get the chance. Dough4872 (talk) 23:10, 25 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Your GA nomination of Pennsylvania Route 737 [edit]

The article Pennsylvania Route 737 you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needed to be addressed. If these are fixed within seven days, the article will pass, otherwise it will fail. See Talk:Pennsylvania Route 737 for things needed to be addressed.--Amadscientist (talk) 11:20, 26 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

PA 287 and Larrys Creek[edit]

I am glad to see someone else using the material - congratulations on getting 287 to GA (I am pretty sure I started it to get rid of a red link in Larrys Creek a long time ago).

Did you notice I added a working {{inflation}} template to the Shohola-Barryville Bridge article? Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:23, 28 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Here's the diff for the inflation template in the bridge article. diff Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:17, 29 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
OK, here I'll try to explain. The example I used is "$9,000 in 1856 (${{formatnum:{{Inflation|US|9000|1856|r=-2}}}} in {{CURRENTYEAR}})." So the $9,000 is the first number in the template (9000) and the year 1856 is the second. The r=-2 is to make the last two digits zeros in the converted price. In general if the dollar amount is X and the year is Y, the code is: (${{formatnum:{{Inflation|US|X|Y|r=-2}}}} in {{CURRENTYEAR}}).< Hope this helps, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 14:24, 29 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Topic Renames[edit]

Hi Mitch, I went ahead and nominated Hamilton and Warren for renaming, following on from Essex - see here and here. I hope you don't mind me doing this. Hopefully they'll go through okay - rst20xx (talk) 17:36, 28 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oh sorry I forgot about 9M, my bad! OK I hid it for the time being - rst20xx (talk) 18:10, 28 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Actually having said that as 9M is a GA you could just add both now, and then the topic will temporarily become a GT but once you get another article up to featured then it will automatically become an FT again without any intervention. Up to you - rst20xx (talk) 18:12, 28 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Short followup from this weekend[edit]

First, I processed this image and put it in Interstate 287.

Second, to see what I was saying about the view east from the Turnpike eastern spur at night resembling the opening shots of Blade Runner, here's what I'm talking about. Daniel Case (talk) 16:16, 29 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Re: If you can get the parks to Featured Article[edit]

Thanks for the vote of confidence. To get an article to FA I need to get sort of obsessed with the topic and I need enough resources (references). Unfortunately to date I have not really found myself with either for roads (then there is the time involved too). We found a bit on PA 660 working on Leonard Harrison, but it was pretty slight stuff. I actually did not write much of Presque Isle, just rewrote a bunch in FAC (someone else did essentially a drive by nom). I do think that Pennsylvania Route 44 could be enhanced with history from White Deer Hole Creek and Cherry Springs State Park. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:22, 31 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

PA 737[edit]

See if any of these can help expand a little of the article to help give more refs to meet your GA reviewer's request:

1, 2, 3 (p. 103 - "Go west on Route 22, north on Route 61, north on Route 895, and east on Route 737. Sanctuary is 6 miles short of Kempton." another on the bird sanctuary), 4, 5, 6, 7, and the rest start to get lesser from there. Ottava Rima (talk) 00:54, 2 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If you replace my pic with something better, I can replace yours ...[edit]

Hope you don't mind this. I have wanted to get that view for a long time (as, I suppose, does any other road person who's driven through Waterbury that way). And I finally found the chance yesterday.

I think I'm going to nominate it for selected picture at the USRD portal. Daniel Case (talk) 04:41, 8 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
