Rhetorical Analysis
Strengths • The lead section gave only succinct, necessary information • All the later sections were cited frequently • With more than two dozen sources I’m inclined to say the article is both neutral and reliable • There are an abundance of references and notes • The complicated plot is described thoroughly • Quotes were used sparingly and were well placed • It encompassed imbedded links well • Visuals helped, specifically when it talked about production techniques • Coverage of all areas of the film seemed balanced
Weaknesses • The opening two sections aren’t cited at all • The plot description could use more specific wording in many places (considering fantasy movie often create their own words which have no colloquial equivalent) • Some of the casting terminology specific to animation is not explained clearly • Maybe a bit too long, including possibly unneeded sections such as games and things that were produced consequently, and the release of it on home media • The structure was not terrible, but it could have been better—clearer
1. View History
• The article was started in October of 2003
• The early versions of the article seem to be analyzing the movie more than explaining what it is. The prose is complicated, and it makes statements about the movie as a “cult classic,” and even possesses the writers’ opinions such as “an excellent film”
• The history page has over 3,000 entries that span consistently from 2003-2017. With so many entries, it’s hard to summarize “how” people edited. In the beginning there are a lot big chunks being added: ALL the cast notes, ALL the production information, the entire plot. However, after all these years, I can still see the article changing, so it’s safe to say that while some people are just cleaning up information, some people are finding more to add.
• There are many contributors on the history page. Some of them appear more than once, but it doesn’t seem like any of them appear an overwhelming amount. It seems to be a pretty equally shared article.
• It seems like it reached its current state (most of the big edits were done) two years ago.
2. Talk • The editors were pretty active on the talk page, one section of which is even archived. • Mostly it seems they used the talk page to discuss something that was wrong in the article. Additionally, they talked about supplementary information not given in the movie and whether that was appropriate to put on a page that was specifically about just the movie. • The conversation was civil and didn’t seem to call anyone out directly, but the tones of some of the comments were definitely annoyed when people got things wrong, or put in illegitimate information. • Since it was so hard to track all the editors on the history page (likewise there are a lot on the talk page), it’s hard to say if there are the same main players on both. I’m assuming at some points there are, but again, it seems to be shared responsibility.
3. Copy Edits
• I tightened some of the language, making the prose flow better
• In a few places I defined things more specifically.
o For example: the Movie is called The Dark Crystal but instead of calling the object a crystal, it was being called a gem, even though, in the movie, all the characters call it “the crystal.”
o At one point it says Jen (the protagonist) is on a quest, which is true, but he was sent on the journey to fulfill a prophecy, so I made the sentence more specific.
o At another point the article describes two new races appearing when the crystal splits, but the races weren’t actually new, they once were one, and split in half like the crystal.

Chosen Pitch:
Rick Uribe-- is the season three winner of Skin Wars, a successful reality TV show that showcases competing body painters. Rick was the youngest contestant ever on the show, and then the youngest winner. After the show he opened up his own tattoo parlor and now splits his time doing tattoos for people from all over the country, body painting, and making city murals which he did before the show. I think it will be notable enough because he won a successful show and then went on to more success from those winnings. We should be able to find information from during the show, such as articles written about episodes, and then interviews after he won. There are also sites talking about the opening of his shop, and other sites exhibiting all his forms of art.
Other Avenues:
The most obvious one is to do research involving the show he was on, such as researching the judges and producers. Less obvious avenues involve researching the two tattoo artists that work with Rick at his shop. Additionally, it could be useful to look up information about street murals in El Paso, Texas (Rick's home), which is where he first began his artistic journey. I can also see if he's competed or shown his body art at any other venues, and then research those venues.
