A barnstar for you!

The Editor's Barnstar
Thank you for correcting my mistakes in both Ultraliga and EMEA Masters pages.

I'm still learning and those are my 2 first wikipedia pages. I appreciate the help. :) YeahIKnowRight (talk) 15:41, 11 January 2023 (UTC)

@YeahIKnowRight: Thank you. Your second article, EMEA Masters, is a good start! If/when you decide to expand on the article, try not to add too much detail. For example, Ultraliga is a quite a bit overly detailed with standings and brackets -- something that should probably be summarized in a simple championship table by year. Keep up the good work! – Pbrks (t • c) 15:33, 12 January 2023 (UTC)

New Pages Patrol newsletter January 2023

Hello Pbrks/Archives,

New Page Review queue December 2022
Backlog

The October drive reduced the backlog from 9,700 to an amazing 0! Congratulations to WaddlesJP13 who led with 2084 points. See this page for further details. The queue is steadily rising again and is approaching 2,000. It would be great if <2,000 were the “new normal”. Please continue to help out even if it's only for a few or even one patrol a day.

2022 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2022 cup for 28,302 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 80/day. There was one Gold Award (5000+ reviews), 11 Silver (2000+), 28 Iron (360+) and 39 more for the 100+ barnstar. Rosguill led again for the 4th year by clearing 49,294 redirects. For the full details see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone!

Minimum deletion time: The previous WP:NPP guideline was to wait 15 minutes before tagging for deletion (including draftification and WP:BLAR). Due to complaints, a consensus decided to raise the time to 1 hour. To illustrate this, very new pages in the feed are now highlighted in red. (As always, this is not applicable to attack pages, copyvios, vandalism, etc.)

New draftify script: In response to feedback from AFC, the The Move to Draft script now provides a choice of set messages that also link the creator to a new, friendly explanation page. The script also warns reviewers if the creator is probably still developing the article. The former script is no longer maintained. Please edit your edit your common.js or vector.js file from User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js to User:MPGuy2824/MoveToDraft.js

Redirects: Some of our redirect reviewers have reduced their activity and the backlog is up to 9,000+ (two months deep). If you are interested in this distinctly different task and need any help, see this guide, this checklist, and spend some time at WP:RFD.

Discussions with the WMF The PageTriage open letter signed by 444 users is bearing fruit. The Growth Team has assigned some software engineers to work on PageTriage, the software that powers the NewPagesFeed and the Page Curation toolbar. WMF has submitted dozens of patches in the last few weeks to modernize PageTriage's code, which will make it easier to write patches in the future. This work is helpful but is not very visible to the end user. For patches visible to the end user, volunteers such as Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have been writing patches for bug reports and feature requests. The Growth Team also had a video conference with the NPP coordinators to discuss revamping the landing pages that new users see.

2017 Speedway World Cup article page

Hi Pbrks, I need your help. You replaced a template on 11 November with a template called 8TeamBracket-4Wa. However this made the raceoff text line disappear. I don't know how to add an extra text line to the template you used in order to bring back the race off info i.e. venue, date an article link. Hope you can help. Many thanks Pyeongchang (talk) 20:00, 15 January 2023 (UTC)

@Pyeongchang: Hello. Thanks for pointing this out. Its an issue with the underlying module Module:Build bracket. I'll get it fixed asap. – Pbrks (t • c) 20:37, 15 January 2023 (UTC)

Confused here... Since there are no longer transclusions with deprecated parameters, why shouldn't the category be removed? It is different then when you have unknown parameters which can occur anytime... -- Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 22:59, 20 January 2023 (UTC)

@Zackmann08: Hello. I removed the speedy deletion tag due to its invalid reasoning. You can tag it again if you believe it should be deleted. – Pbrks (t • c) 16:39, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
It's not clear to a patrolling admin what to do with this page. Liz Read! Talk! 01:44, 23 January 2023 (UTC)
Liz, this category can safely be deleted, since I removed the template code that would tag pages with it. All of the deprecated parameters were removed from affected pages, so I moved the template to the next step: removing the parameters and tracking category entirely. Any new invocations of those parameters will cause articles to appear in the template's "unknown parameters" category. – Jonesey95 (talk) 02:13, 23 January 2023 (UTC)

Repechage

Hi, how are u doing, we had a long conversation about repechage templates and you helped a lot fixing some issues. Can you fix few more things for me? they didn't exist before but I don't know from when Template:Repechage is automatically set for nowrap=yes and even putting nowrap=n (which works for other templates) doesn't change a thing. Can you add that option? thanks in advance. Sports2021 (talk) 16:08, 23 May 2023 (UTC)

Hi again, not sure if you missed my message here or just busy to answer it. I thought maybe I should send another message. I assume the problem has something to do with this edit. take a look at it whenever you have time, thanks. Sports2021 (talk) 01:40, 28 May 2023 (UTC)
Hello. Yes, I will work on adding an option back. – Pbrks (t • c) 15:31, 29 May 2023 (UTC)
@Sports2021: You should be able to turn off the wrapping with the parameter |nowrap=no. – Pbrks (t • c) 14:31, 1 June 2023 (UTC)
Thanks A LOT, I want to ask one more favour, if you take a look at this screenshot I took from this page you can see the width is not the same in the main bracket and the repechage with exactly the same input. can you make them look similar? I mean the repechage template used to have the same look.r Thanks. Sports2021 (talk) 23:18, 1 June 2023 (UTC)

Repechage template

Hi there! I was hoping you could help me with something on {{Repechage}}, which uses far more advanced code than I'm familiar with. The only way to get byes to display is by setting "byes" to yes or y. Unfortunately, all of these calls get dumped into a maintenance category, Category:Pages using a team bracket with deprecated syntax - the preferred call is to specify the furthest round a bye can appear. Changing "byes=y" to "byes=1" breaks the template, and shows blank cells. Is there any way you could tweak things on the backend to allow byes to display, while also keeping pages out of the maintenance category? Thanks!!! -fuzzy510 (talk) 08:58, 9 June 2023 (UTC)

@Fuzzy510: Hi. The error is actually not originating from {{Repechage}}, but rather {{2TeamBracket}}, {{4TeamBracket}}, {{8TeamBracket}}, etc. The former uses Module:Build bracket, which allows |byes=y, while the others use Module:Team bracket, which prefers |byes=n. – Pbrks (t • c) 14:14, 13 June 2023 (UTC)
Okay - if there are no changes made to {{Repechage}}, do you have a suggestion for how we can resolve this? Because as I see it, {{Repechage}} (and other templates using Modile:Build bracket is causing a split in the template syntax, and it seems much more reasonable to make a change to the template getting 10% of the usage of {{2TeamBracket}} et al, instead of making a change on the much more common template and breaking far more usages. -fuzzy510 (talk) 18:07, 13 June 2023 (UTC)

New Pages Patrol newsletter June 2023

Hello Pbrks/Archives,

New Page Review queue April to June 2023

Backlog

Redirect drive: In response to an unusually high redirect backlog, we held a redirect backlog drive in May. The drive completed with 23851 reviews done in total, bringing the redirect backlog to 0 (momentarily). Congratulations to Hey man im josh who led with a staggering 4316 points, followed by Meena and Greyzxq with 2868 and 2546 points respectively. See this page for more details. The redirect queue is steadily rising again and is steadily approaching 4,000. Please continue to help out, even if it's only for a few or even one review a day.

Redirect autopatrol: All administrators without autopatrol have now been added to the redirect autopatrol list. If you see any users who consistently create significant amounts of good quality redirects, consider requesting redirect autopatrol for them here.

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team, consisting of Sam, Jason and Susana, and also some patches from Jon, has been hard at work updating PageTriage. They are focusing their efforts on modernising the extension's code rather than on bug fixes or new features, though some user-facing work will be prioritised. This will help make sure that this extension is not deprecated, and is easier to work on in the future. In the next month or so, we will have an opt-in beta test where new page patrollers can help test the rewrite of Special:NewPagesFeed, to help find bugs. We will post more details at WT:NPPR when we are ready for beta testers.

Articles for Creation (AFC): All new page reviewers are now automatically approved for Articles for Creation draft reviewing (you do not need to apply at WT:AFCP like was required previously). To install the AFC helper script, visit Special:Preferences, visit the Gadgets tab, tick "Yet Another AFC Helper Script", then click "Save". To find drafts to review, visit Special:NewPagesFeed, and at the top left, tick "Articles for Creation". To review a draft, visit a submitted draft, click on the "More" menu, then click "Review (AFCH)". You can also comment on and submit drafts that are unsubmitted using the script.

You can review the AFC workflow at WP:AFCR. It is up to you if you also want to mark your AFC accepts as NPP reviewed (this is allowed but optional, depends if you would like a second set of eyes on your accept). Don't forget that draftspace is optional, so moves of drafts to mainspace (even if they are not ready) should not be reverted, except possibly if there is conflict of interest.

Pro tip: Did you know that visual artists such as painters have their own SNG? The most common part of this "creative professionals" criteria that applies to artists is WP:ARTIST 4b (solo exhibition, not group exhibition, at a major museum) or 4d (being represented within the permanent collections of two museums).

Opinion on deletion of individual team call of duty league seasons

Hi, I just thought I'd get your opinion given your history with the individual OWL team season pages whether you think deleting the 4 current individual CDL team season pages is a good idea. There's only currently 4 out of the 48 pages required to cover every teams 4 seasons and I was the page creator of 2 of them, I have no ambition to do more on the topic and think it would be a bit silly to create 44 more pages for a topic im not sure even meets the notability guidelines. Also the 2 other page creators have seemingly stopped making edits for the last 2 years.

Also to be honest I've never properly nominated an article/multiple articles for deletion discussion so if you have any advice on the process I'd appreciate it. Brandon Downes (talk) 04:51, 25 August 2023 (UTC)

@Brandon Downes: I agree with you that it's on the edge as to whether or not the CDL team season articles would pass GNG (as is the case with OWL ones, which is why I have not made any since 2021). I do think that championship seasons could usually pass GNG. In any event, you have a couple of options. You could WP:PROD the article, which would soft delete them, assuming that there are no objections. You could also go through standard the WP:AfD process. Both of these are very easy to initiate with Twinkle, which can be enabled in your preferences. This will give you a dropdown tab that makes it easy to nominate pages for deletion, as well as do other tasks. – Pbrks (t • c) 14:50, 25 August 2023 (UTC)

png -> jpg

Hi, I'm just wondering is there a reason why you are converting PNG files to JPGs? example 1 example 2 - Skipple 20:27, 7 September 2023 (UTC)

@Skipple: Hello. JPGs are preferred for photographic images for a multitude of reasons, the most obvious reason being the file's size. JPGs also produce a more clear picture for thumbnails. For example, see the difference here:
However, a PNG version of a photographic image can be useful as an "original", since they are lossless. c:COM:PNG has some good extra information if you are interested. – Pbrks (t • c) 20:44, 7 September 2023 (UTC)
Interesting, thanks for the info - Skipple 20:54, 7 September 2023 (UTC)

Opinion on citing tournament results from ASL

Help with trophy section of Valorant Champions Tour

Hi there. I appreciate your willingness to keep said article within Wikipedia's rules. Please could you provide assistance on how to write about the physical attributes and design of the Valorant Champions trophy without appearing, as you put it, "promotional". Trophies are often written about when it comes to sporting events - please see Premier League#Trophy, League of Legends World Championship#Trophy. There are no major sources discussing the trophy however I believe it's important for the article due to its prominence, how unique the design is, and its ties to Valorant lore (radianite etc.) Thank you in advance.

PS: do you think it is worth me seeking permission from Riot to use images of these trophies to illustrate them?

daylon124 (talk) 21:18, 8 September 2023 (UTC)

@Daylon124: Hello. The difference between the articles you linked and the VCT article is that independent sources have covered those trophies, while the VCT trophy is sourced to, well, the manufacturer of the trophy. If you can find better sources for the VCT trophy, then it would be appropriate to include it in the article. – Pbrks (t • c) 22:59, 8 September 2023 (UTC)
@Pbrks: Thanks for the reply, however the source was used for factual information rather than anything subjective. One cannot have an opinion on whether it was made of 24k gold. WP:PRIMARYNOTBAD. The only secondary source I can find doesn't cover the actual materials or design in the detail that the factual primary source does (see here). What are your thoughts here? daylon124 (talk) 23:46, 8 September 2023 (UTC)
@Daylon124: Both cones were fabricated using cutting-edge 3D printing techniques is not very neutral, and there is no need to copy-paste their description of it. WP:NOTEVERYTHING is also relevant here. If only primary sources are talking about the subject, it probably doesn't belong on Wikipedia. However, I think primary sources can be used as additional information, to expand on information given by secondary sources. – Pbrks (t • c) 03:50, 9 September 2023 (UTC)

Help with template

Hi, I was just wondering if you had any idea on how to change Template:World's Strongest Man Contestbox so that the "winner" parameter was under a header similar to how Template:Infobox tournament does it for "current champion" for example on World's Strongest Man. I did try and do it myself (see here) by copying the current champion section from the tournament template to the WSM contestbox however when trying to use it, it only creates the header and doesnt put anything under it.

Sorry if this is out of the scope of your knowdledge (its definitely out of mine) and I've wasted but your time but thanks in advance. Brandon Downes (talk) 19:42, 12 September 2023 (UTC)

@Brandon Downes: Hello. It should all be set up. You need to use the |header#= parameter, not the |label#= parameter. – Pbrks (t • c) 00:56, 13 September 2023 (UTC)
Thank you so much!! Brandon Downes (talk) 03:40, 13 September 2023 (UTC)

New pages patrol newsletter

Hello Pbrks/Archives,

New Page Review article queue, March to September 2023

Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!

October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.

PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.

Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.

Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.

Esports national team flag roster

I notice you reverted my edit on the roster for South Korea national esports team. I am aware of MOS:SPORTSFLAG. I reiterate that the usage of the flags is compliant with said guideline.

I'm asking you to consider the following:

  • The documentation for Esports national team roster templates states that the flag is for the "associated country of the player's esports team. Not the player's citizenship or nationality."
    • The esports template was based on the FIBA roster header templates (equivalent of the template for national basketball team). As per its documentation the flag (nat field) is for the "nationality of player's club team, e.g. "United States", "Canada", "France", etc. or... the corresponding 3-letter abbr., e.g. "USA", "CAN", "FRA""". Refer to a national team article with a diverse squad (players coming from multiple leagues)
  • Refer to rosters of national teams in other sports, specifically basketball and football.
  • The flags on the esports template refers to the team sporting nationality (which is not usage in a non-sporting sense)
  • In a national team roster, its safe to assume that all players have the sporting nationality linked to the national team. (ie. In the South Korea national esports team, all players are South Korean - no need to indicate a flag while not all of them are necessarily linked to a South Korean non-national team. Some may be part of a esports non-national team that for sporting purposes represent China.

Hariboneagle927 (talk) 18:18, 30 September 2023 (UTC)

@Hariboneagle927: I see. The country column is still a bit confusing, imo. I genuinely was unsure if Kanavi was Chinese, but for some reason was playing for South Korea. If I may recommend, expand the tooltip for Ctr. to specify that it is the nationality of player's team. – Pbrks (t • c) 00:01, 1 October 2023 (UTC)
Haha, oh yes now looking back I was genuinely confused with it too with the basketball roster template. The football template does it better with the flag beside the club team name. I have access with the esports header so I can tweak this one. Thanks for hearing my points! Hariboneagle927 (talk) 02:24, 1 October 2023 (UTC)
@Hariboneagle927: No worries. Thinking more on it, it may be better to set it up so that there is no Ctr. column and, for example, |player_team=Fennel |nat=PHI would render under the header Team as "Philippines Fennel". I think that way, there is absolutely no confusion as to what the flag is representing here. – Pbrks (t • c) 02:51, 1 October 2023 (UTC)

at the top of your script, and

// </nowiki>

at the bottom of your script. This won't impact the functionality, since they are in javascript comments, but will remove the pages from Special:WantedTemplates. Thanks in advance for your help! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 14:02, 14 October 2023 (UTC)

Hello 🙂

Were you able to fix the bracket issue I was having at the helpdesk a couple of weeks back? 🔧 Jq-22 (talk) 14:24, 18 October 2023 (UTC)

November Articles for creation backlog drive

Hello Pbrks:

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive!
The goal of this drive is to reduce the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than 2 months outstanding reviews from the current 4+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 November 2023 through 30 November 2023.

You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.

Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.

There is a backlog of over 2600 pages, so start reviewing drafts. We're looking forward to your help! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:24, 31 October 2023 (UTC)

Seal not showing

Good day. Any idea why the seal isn't showing at File:New South Wales Teachers Federation logo.svg? --Minorax«¦talk¦» 05:11, 17 November 2023 (UTC)

@Minorax: Hello. The issue was that transform attributes were specified within the clipPath elements, so when the logo's elements were clipped using the contents inside these clipPath elements, they did not conform to the intended transformation. I moved the transform attribute to the actual paths inside of the clipPath element. – Pbrks (t • c) 15:55, 17 November 2023 (UTC)
Ah ok. Thanks :) --Minorax«¦talk¦» 02:20, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
Good day. Mind taking a look at File:European Club Association logo.svg as well? --Minorax«¦talk¦» 02:41, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
@Minorax: Done. Basically the same issue as last time. transform="translate(-203 -380.36)" was inside of the clipPath element instead of the path element nested inside of it. – Pbrks (t • c) 06:36, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
