Yu Fan (164–233), style name Zhongxiang, was an official of the state of Eastern Wu in the Three Kingdoms period. Formerly a subordinate of Wang Lang, the Administrator of Kuaiji, he surrendered to the warlord Sun Ce after the latter occupied Kuaiji and other territories in the Jiangdong (or Wu) region in a series of military campaigns between 194 and 199 CE. After Sun Ce's death in 200 CE, Yu Fan continued serving under the former's younger brother and successor, Sun Quan, who declared himself 'Emperor' and established the Eastern Wu regime in 229.
In fiction
In Luo Guanzhong's historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Yu Fan was one of the scholars who argued with Zhuge Liang during the latter's visit to Jiangdong to form an alliance between Liu Bei and Sun Quan. In another incident, when Zhou Tai was seriously wounded in battle, Yu Fan recommended the physician Hua Tuo to heal Zhou. Yu Fan also contributed during Lü Meng's invasion of Jing Province by persuading Guan Yu's subordinate Fu Shiren to defect to Sun Quan's side.
