It is called "machhari ke jhol" or "maccharik jhol" depending on the dialect of Bhojpuri spoken. The Bhojpuri region is riverine which is why fish and prawns have been consumed there since ancient times. During the period of indenture, Bhojpuri labourers brought this dish with them to the various indenture colonies. undo
