"Put It in a Love Song"
Song

"Put It in a Love Song" is a song performed by American recording artist Alicia Keys featuring fellow American R&B singer Beyoncé Knowles. It officially impacted U.S. radio on January 19, 2010, and was originally set to be the fourth single from her 2009 album, The Element of Freedom. However, the song's full release as the fifth single from the album was postponed so that "Un-Thinkable (I'm Ready)" could be pushed forward as the fourth single.[2]

Background

Musically the song consists of an expanded chorus and a verse-rap. Knowles appears in the chorus singing parts opposite of Keys as well as appearing in the second verse and bridge that follows the same formula as the chorus.[citation needed]

In an interview, Keys mentioned Beyoncé and the song: "We had a lot of fun. It's nice that we just celebrate each others careers, that's what the song is about, coming together to empower each other. This song was meant for us at this time. We've become really good friends. We've been in the business about the same amount of time and both signed to Columbia Records together when we were 14. It was like a party in the studio, the energy was so high and chemistry was genuine".[3]

Beyoncé joined Keys to perform the song live for the first time on March 17, 2010 at New York City's Madison Square Garden whilst Keys was playing a date from The Freedom Tour. It was recorded by U.S. chart provider, Billboard magazine.[4]

Critical reception

The song received generally mixed to positive reviews from critics. Entertainment Weekly gave the song a mixed review stating that the song "is fun, though not entirely in sync with the record's lush, midtempo vibe."[5] USA Today negatively stated "The only one that seems out of place is the club anthem 'Put It in a Love Song', a collaboration with Beyoncé that's catchy but ultimately underwhelming, considering the talents involved."[6] Rolling Stone was also not impressed: "She has less success with "Put It in a Love Song," a Beyoncé-Swizz Beatz collabo that could have been called "Single Ladies 2: Put Another Ring on It".[7]

Randy Lewis of The Los Angeles Times gave the song a positive review stating "self-confidence is in full flower in 'Put It in a Love Song,' her effervescent duet with Beyoncé that has "hit single" written all over it."[8] James Reed of The Boston Globe stated "in high vamping mode, has already made its way to radio, but it’s a slip of a song, coasting on its contagious chorus and delivering little more."[9] Allison Stewart of The Washington Post stated "Keys also teams with Beyoncé, the glittery Diana Ross to Keys’s [sic] super-serious poetry major, for the disc’s best track, 'Put It in a Love Song.'...'Love Song' is an oddly mechanical number that lurches from diva to diva but somehow doesn't fall over..."[10] Andrew Burgess from MusicOMH called it one of the album's "standout moments", describing it as having "the Sasha Fierce brashness" and that "the always fantastic Beyoncé takes a notable backseat to Keys for a delightful and surprising change of pace".[11]

Single Cancellation

With Alicia Keys due any time during December and being in no fit state to continue with the planned re-release promotion of “The Element of Freedom” album and not forgetting “The Greatest Hits” LP, it’s now becoming even more clear that many future projects will have had to be changed, delayed or completely forgotten.[12]

With Alicia Keys recently parting with management, which is most likely now to be replaced by new husband and hit producer Swizz Beatz. Be side all the dramas around her, it was confirmed that the single “Put It In A Love Song” has been cancelled for any further promotion and release. Sony Music Entertainment stated that “the record was now far overdue, and would not place among those records out now. It would not get what it deserves in the current market” – In all fairness, the hype around the track has been killed and true to the point that “Put It In A Love Song” would epically fall out of any chart if released tomorrow.[13][14][15]

Music video

Keys in talking about making preparations for the video with Knowles said, "She's an incredible lady and I absolutely consider her a friend. And we are going to totally, entirely blow your whole head backwards when we do that video".[16] Beyoncé first suggested Egypt, but since she would be on tour in Brazil, during the carnival, both of them agreed about shooting the video in Rio.[17] On February 9, 2010, it has been confirmed that Keys and Knowles shot the music video in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.[18] It was shot against the backdrop of Rio's landscape, including two Favelas, the Dona Marta Hill - the same place where Michael Jackson's video of "They Don't Care About Us" was shot - and the Conceição Hill,[19] in the center of Rio, with 80 members of the Grande Rio Samba School, and the Sambódromo, where Carnival parades are held. Keys and Beyoncé were outfitted in Carnival-inspired costumes. While Knowles chose a Swarovski headwear, Keys preferred a Pheasant headwear.[20] It is the first time in her career that Keys has worked with prolific director Melina Matsoukas, who has previously worked with Knowles on a number of occasions.[21] Keys told MTV after filming the video: "Shooting 'Put It in a Love Song' in Rio, in Brazil, was very incredible, I feel that the energy of the city matches the energy of the song. It's sensual, it's exciting, it's so rich with color. I loved it. The people came out so heavy and so hard. I think it was exciting, especially to participate and experience it with them like that. Me and B have a great relationship. And to be able to have the chemistry we have and do it in a city that's so unique like that is unforgettable. The pictures speak a thousand words. So you saw the energy out there. It was great".[22]

In April 2010, Keys told Rap-Up that the music video would not be out until after the video for the fourth single "Un-Thinkable (I'm Ready)" is released. She said "it probably won't come out until closer to this Summer".[2] It was announced in September 2010 that the release had been canceled. [23] The music video is expected to be released for digital download only, and not released on YouTube.[24]
