Bangabandhu Memorial Museum, also known as Bangabandhu Bhaban or simply referred as Dhanmondi 32 was the personal residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father and President of Bangladesh,[1] who was assassinated along with most of his family in the residence. Today it is a museum. It is located in Dhanmondi, Dhaka.[2]

History

In 1956, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the then industry minister of East Pakistan, applied to the government through his private secretary to get a plot of Dhanmondi residential project situated in Dhaka, the administrative capital. A year later, when the government allotted him a plot in Dhanmondi, he built a one-storey house there. The one-story house had two rooms. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman started living in the house with his family built on the loan of House Building Finance Corporation from August 1, 1961. At that time he had to pay Rs.  1,000 advance to get the plot.[3]

In 1967 the house was upgraded to two storeys. On the night of March 25, 1971, Sheikh Mujib proclaimed independence of the administrative unit from this house before arrested by Pakistani army.[4] After the house was repaired due to 1971 war, he and his family started to living in this house again from February 1972 to August 1975 after returning from Pakistan.[5] On 15 August 1975, some disgruntled army officers carried out the Assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. His wife Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib, his sons Sheikh Kamal, Sheikh Jamal, and Sheikh Russel were killed in the attack on their residence.[6][7]

In 1981, Sheikh Hasina got the ownership of the house when she paid an installment after putting it up for auction due to non-payment of installments of the loan given for construction of the building.[3] On 12 June 1981, the house was officially handed over to the surviving family members of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. She found Sheikh Mujib's diaries in the building after the handover and these were later published in the form of memoirs.[8]

Museum

John Kerry looks at spot where a founder would address people in Dhaka, Bangladesh, before a bilateral meeting on August 29, 2016.

After Sheikh Hasina got the ownership of the residence, she announced the conversation of the house into museum. The museum was inaugurated on 14 August 1994. Bangabandhu Memorial Trust was handed the house to turn into a museum on 6 September 1994.[9] The trust selected Ehsan Khan, Ishtiaque Jahir and Iqbal Habib as the planners for the conversation from an architectural design competition.[10] While turning it into a museum, the trust kept the original structure of the house.[11] On August 20, 2011, the museum was extended by building new structure near the house.[3]

Description

The ground floor of the house has a drawing room, reading room and kitchen. Going up to the second floor, Sheikh Hasina's bed room comes first. Adjacent to his bed room is a room where Mujib used to watch television and eat meals with his family. Also on the second floor are the bed rooms of Mujib, Sheikh Jamal, Sheikh Kamal and Sheikh Rehana.[12]
