== Re: User page for GearedBull ==

I deleted it because it was simply a recreation of a deleted article ([[Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Free_State_of_Montzoar_Palatinate|see AfD]]). While temporary userpages are allowed to foster article creation/development, a long term entry such as yours goes above and beyond what's usually permissible. In addition, the article was deleted on the grounds of being a hoax, which means it would never be allowed into the mainspace as a normal article. <span style="color:red;font-weight:bold">^</span>[[User:^demon|<span style="color:black;font-weight:bold;">demon</span>]][[User_talk:^demon|<span style="color:red">[omg plz]</span>]]&nbsp;<em style="font-size:10px;">19:21, 30 May 2007 (UTC)</em>

== CSD Tag on White House travel office controversy‎ ==

You recently nominated [[White House travel office controversy]] for [[WP:CSD|speedy deletion]].

This article does meet any deletion criteria, as it was a notable controversy, let alone [[WP:CSD G10|CSD G10]]. The deletion process is not an outlet for content dispute, please discuss your problems with the article on its [[Talk:White House travel office controversy|talk]] page.--[[User:RWR8189|RWR8189]] 04:47, 2 June 2007 (UTC)
:Same comment about [[Commercegate]]. Please make sure that you understand what the [[WP:CSD|criteria for speedy deletion]] are before putting up these tags. I'm also afraid that you are confusing pages that document a certain political controversy with an attack page. [[User:Pascal.Tesson|Pascal.Tesson]] 05:04, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

== Visible Language ==

Hi GearedBull — I'm personally pushing for the graphic design articles to be heavily resourced so that these become a sturdy foundation for later entries. To that end I've been contributing articles on printed materials ([[List of Eye magazine issues]], [[List of Baseline magazine issues]], etc) and authors ([[Steven Heller (graphic design)]], [[Ellen Lupton]], etc) to make this easier. I'm also finding it's unavoidable to use online resources, but Wikipedia's own standard is for references to be published. I also like when articles are tagged as unreferenced to keep the reader aware that they've got to look elsewhere to verify material. That's my own agenda. In the case of Visible Language I realize it's a judgment call... please feel free to change/revert my edits. — Thanks!

== [[Red Clover]] ==
Greetings! I saw you recently moved this page from [[Red clover]] to [[Red Clover]]. Per [[WP:NC]] and [[WP:MOS]], it is proper to follow the style of the first major contribution, since capitalization is a style issue rather than a naming convention, both capitalized and uncapitalized species common names are accepted. I didn't look that far back in the history, but it doesn't seem that it had been recently moved. But also, just so that you're aware, [[WP:NC (flora)]] is the guideline regarding the article titles of flora, most of which should be placed at their scientific name. I have requested that the page be moved to the scientific name (I'm unable to since the redirect has more than one edit). == Shire Town ==

I've lived in Vermont for many years as well, and I frequently hear the term "[[shire town]]." Yes, it is more pleasing to the ear than "county seat," but it is also an offical term used by the State of Vermont to refer to its county seats. The term can be found in every major dictionary, and is found in numerous Wiki entries, including the entry for [[Addison County, Vermont]]. You may not like the term, but it is still in usage and is a perfectly appropriate term for county seats in New England, your own personal experiences aside.

== White House Pics ==

Well I guess I've screwed up again. Just from my perspective, someone who is familiar with the White House but doesn't know too much about it, the pics crowded space. I like the pic of the White House in the 1860s though, and maybe you should consider keeping that. It sounds like I've just screwed things up even further though, so do what you want. A "{{[[Template:prod|prod]]}}" template has been added to the article [[Tema Cantante Sans]], suggesting that it be deleted according to the [[Wikipedia:Proposed deletion|proposed deletion]] process. All contributions are appreciated, but the article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice explains why (see also "[[Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not|What Wikipedia is not]]" and [[Wikipedia:Deletion policy|Wikipedia's deletion policy]]). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the <code><nowiki>{{dated prod}}</nowiki></code> notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on [[Talk:Tema Cantante Sans|its talk page]]. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the [[WP:PROD|proposed deletion process]], the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the [[Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion|speedy deletion criteria]] or it can be sent to [[Wikipedia:Articles for deletion|Articles for Deletion]], where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. == Typeface sample design ==

I've been really impressed with the type sample designs ([http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:CGothicSpec.svg e.g.]) that Wikipedia has, and it seems to be your work that's so impressive. I couldn't find any formal design doc, so I'm curious if you've got any sort of design specification for what you're doing. I note that you seem to use a desaturated primary color and a desaturated neutral color for the background, and then notable glyphs and a word from (I'm guessing) the language for which it was originally developed.

Anyways, not much except (A) great designs, and (B) is there a specification for that design somewhere? [[User:Superluser|superluser]][[User_talk:Superluser|t]][[Special:Contributions/Superluser|c]]&nbsp;2007&nbsp;August&nbsp;10,&nbsp;08:14&nbsp;(UTC)

==Unspecified source for [[:Image:DechertLLP.png]]==

Thanks for uploading '''[[:Image:DechertLLP.png]]'''. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the [[copyright]] status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{Tl|GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the [[GFDL]]. If you believe the media meets the criteria at [[Wikipedia:Fair use]], use a tag such as {{tlp|non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at [[Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use]]. See [[Wikipedia:Image copyright tags]] for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following [{{fullurl:Special:Log|type=upload&user=GearedBull}} this link]. Revision as of 12:14, 13 August 2007

Please click here to leave me a message.

I wanted to give you a heads up on your editing of the Discussion page. If you read WP:TALK, it gives lots of rules and guidelines on what to do on discussion pages. You edited another editor's POV section title, which isn't good form. Below are the general guidelines:

Editing others' comments is generally not allowed. Exceptions are:

  • If you have their permission
  • Removing prohibited material such as libel and personal details
  • Removing personal attacks and incivility. Please read WP:ATTACK#Removal_of_text and WP:CIVIL#Removing_uncivil_comments before removing anything.
  • Unsigned comments: You are allowed to append {{unsigned}} or one of its variants to the end of someone's comment if they have failed to sign it. The form is {{subst:unsigned|USER NAME OR IP}}, which results in —The preceding unsigned comment was added by USER NAME OR IP (talkcontribs) ..
  • Interruptions: In some cases, it is OK to interrupt a long contribution, either by a short comment (as a reply to a minor point) or by a headline (If the contribution introduces a new topic. In that case, add "<small>Headline added to (reason) by ~~~~</small>"). In such cases, please add {{subst:interrupted|USER NAME OR IP}} before the interruption.

As you can see "Ford and Nazis" though fairly inflammatory, is not prohibited material, is not a personal attack or incivility (against another editor, we can make nonlibelous remarks about Romney all day long, and since he's a politician, it's pretty hard to libel him anyways). If you read much more intensely discussed articles, individuals are banned for censoring discussion pages, and "Ford and Nazis" hardly rates censoring. In general, unless it is really bad, never censor a Discussion section, no matter how obnoxious. Orangemarlin 17:22, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Mystery Man

For the record, I wanted to let you know that I do not support the following comments made by User:The Mystery Man regarding homosexuality:

Both of these pages are disgusting displays of lies toward great people, especially Lincoln who, in my opinion, is the greatest American ever to live. I support the deletion of the pages which hold nothing but pure lies and dribble.

I did not remove the material from James Buchanan, nor post the proposed for deletion notice on the Sexuality of James Buchanan page for the reasons listed by The Mystery Man. I have no problem with homosexuals or homosexuality. I have a problem with rumors being included in Wikipedia articles. Nothing more, nothing less. K. Scott Bailey 20:08, 7 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Apology

I think I owe you an apology. You made comments on the James Buchanan talk page which I think you did in jest, and I misinterpreted them. In any case, even if you were serious, I probably shouldn't have made personal statements. Sorry. NickBurns 10:49, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for accepting the apology. I just need to be less sleepy when I read a long list of comments! I had not seen the Canadian Bill Burns stuff - I will check it out. Your mention of that reminded me of Bill Burns, who was a famous news anchor in Pittsburgh where I grew up. Now I may have to make a Wikipedia entry for him! As for Door County, I've not been that far north yet. Much of WI is very pretty, but so far I'm still in a mindset where I think Madison is just a very distant suburb of Chicago!!! Re Verdana - I wasn't aware of the place name, so the removal of the edit was apropriate. As the Nike mark is in a different TM "class" than the font name, there's really no legal issue with their use of it. Cheers, iloveverdana@hotmail.com

Would you mind explaining the rationale behind your saying that a 650x487 image is "sharper and higher res" than a 6142x3245 image? Noclip 01:59, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Noclip. thanks for writing me about the White House north portico image. I may have mispoke. The problem is more focus and clarity. the present picutre is in much better focus and shows more architectural detail. While I liked the appropriate spring time look to your pic it was very milky and did not show much detail. CApitol3 15:40, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe I am misunderstanding you. I'm not sure what you mean by more architectural detail, are there any specific areas that serve as examples? My image is a stitch of 8 images, each 8 megapixels. I'm not exactly a great photographer, but I imagine it'd be pretty hard for 8 images at 200mm to show less detail than one. Noclip 17:22, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Noclip. On my monitor, the image I placed there last night shows much more detail. I can see the dentils in the pediment, and more detail around the wiondows. CApitol3 20:37, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe it's just me, but the dentils in this image seem just as visible. Noclip 21:28, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nancy Reagan China Pic

Hey. I deleted your picture for two reasons: (1.) look at the article right now. There's a huge gap between your picture and the next paragraph, which isn't displayed in any of the other pictures. There isn't a way to fix that without deleting the pic. (2.) We should be displaying Mrs. Reagan's time as first lady, and not the China she ordered for the White House. I know and understand that it was a big part of her first term as First Lady, but I don't care what the China looked like; it wasn't the design that caused the controversy. I want to see pictures of Nancy Reagan. I would recommend this photo because it shows what Mrs. Reagan did to overcome the bad press she was getting from the china. The china pic is in a bad place; it doesn't really display anything having to do with Nancy Reagan, other than the fact she bought it, and there was some controvery over she buying it not over the pattern or design of it. Again, the china piture is not necessary, for it leaves a large space, and it does not sufficiently show Reagan's time as First Lady. Happyme22 19:21, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well I guess we can agree to disagree. I still don't think the picture should go in, but the article should mention more about her active role in choosing new White Hosue China. I'm sorry if I've gotten a little carried away. I no that this Wikipedia article is not a shrine to Mrs. Reagan, but I still son't think the pic should go in. Is there an article about all of the White House Chinas? You could add it there, or even make one. Happyme22 19:40, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Type specimens

Hi Jim

I don't have QuarkXPress or Illustrator, and don't have any experience with vector graphics programs. Apparently Inkscape is free, so I'll try to see what I can do using that. It will be a good learning experience in any case.

If you want to get Calibri and are happy to jump thru a few hoops, you can download the PowerPoint 2007 viewer then extract the fonts using cabextract, File Juicer, or p7zip.

Local organizations in high-level categories

Please note for information that it is not appropriate to put local organizations in high-level categories - it raises queries re notability. You should look for lower-level categories. For example, of all local cultural heritage organizations were placed under Category:Cultural heritage it would become huge. I hope this helps you with future categorization. — Jonathan Bowen 16:24, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have added some of your entries to [:Category:Heritage organizations]] instead, which seems more appropriate. You might want to use this category in future. Regards, Jonathan Bowen 16:31, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Times

I know it is called Times Roman but the Roman refers to the "regular" or upright typeface. The registered trademark is Times as can be seen here: http://www.linotype.com/1537/times-family.html.

Times Roman

I agree. It's called Times Roman but not Times New Roman. The example picture is Times Roman and not Times New Roman, take a look at the E, e, and A. I will change the name in the image to Times Roman. Arne Padmos 12:01, 30 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You may not be aware of our policy on biographies of living people, but it's important that we don't add defamatory information about living people without having good sources. The policy, WP:BLP, now recommends that editors remove such material whenever seen. (The Siegenthaler Rule). As for the material in question, it appears to quote a diner owner and a small-town NRA chairman on the mannerisms of the subject. Even with a source those two don't have what I'd call "noteworthy opinions" that require quoting. I know it seems odd when an unregistered user deletes material, but in this case they were correct. -Will Beback · · 10:37, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Valentine Bandit

Sure, I'll remove the notice although I still have notability concerns. If I still have notability concerns after a reasonable amount of time (probably a week or two) it is more likely now that I will nominate the article for deletion. But if you establish notability I will have no problem with the article staying. Ta-ra!--Yon Yonson 02:48, 3 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

I just put it there because it seemed relevant. If you want to contribute, go ahead, and if not, I'll get around to adding info. Thanks -- ChunkyStyle (talk contribs) 17:49, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dated cleanup tags

Hi, thanks for your message, SmackBot does not generally add tags, but merely dates those that are already there. Regards, Rich Farmbrough, 13:31 10 May 2007 (GMT).

Typeface categorization

Thanks for catching my error with Korinna. I'm not sure why I did that. There are so many articles to deal with I don't remember exactly why I put that one there. If I did it by mistake, I apologize. Looking at it now, it clearly isn't modern. However, it doesn't strike me as a slab either. As for Bell, it shares some features of transitionals, so I felt it was ok (plus there was a source, maybe not a good source, but a source that states the face is less severe than the French models and is now classified as Transitional[1]). The beauty of categories is we don't have to make a typeface fit into a single category. Anyway, any help and input on categorizing typeface articles is great. Thanks very much for contacting me. So, do you think organizing typefaces by foundry is a bad idea? I was thinking that having a category for designer if notable, (say a Matthew Carter or Eric Gill or Hermann Zapf), a category or two for style, a category for date, if applicable, and a foundry or two would be a very solid categorization scheme. I understand that foundry can get real messy, but if we keep a strict hold on things, just focusing on for who the typeface was originally created (or revived), I believe categorizing by foundry can be helpful. However, do you think I should stop and we should delete all those by foundry cats? I think it is of particular interest to list say all the Emigre typefaces together, but as I said, it can get messier with older faces.-Andrew c 04:02, 13 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image:GreenMtBoys.jpg

I was wondering if you could take a look again at Image:GreenMtBoys.jpg that you uploaded. You copyright tagged it as PD-art but this only applies to 2-d works of art - and a flag most definitely exists in three dimensions. If you took the picture yourself tag it as PD-self, otherwise you will have to consider an alternative license or the image might be deleted. Madmedea 14:58, 14 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Copperplate!

If the images in our photo blog display other fonts, it's because they are near Copperplate Gothic in the photos. We take pictures of Copperplate Gothic where ever we see it, and although other fonts may sneak into the picture, the focus is nonetheless on Copperplate and the variants used in real-world design (italic, bold, horrible resizing, shadows, etc.) We had discussed blurring the photos except for Copperplate, but it was distracting. These are photos uploaded immediately from our camera phones, so they are candid and we cannot be expected to include ONLY Copperplate in the photos.

I would very much like to keep our link on the Copperplate Gothic entry, and I feel that it's not only entirely 100% relevant but also educational regarding the wide-spread use of the font. The link stayed on the Wikipedia entry for months without incident -- it's not bashing (aside from the title) and has information not available on the Wikipedia entry in some of the posts.

Thanks! --Pinkfairywand 16:53, 14 May 2007 (UTC)—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Pinkfairywand (talkcontribs) 16:50, 14 May 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Copperplate again

These are the first messages I have ever received from you, so I'm sorry if you have confused me with someone else.

If we have included fonts that are not Copperplate GoThic in our entries it is because they look almost exactly like it and we are not as intelligent as you. If you could spend some of your time telling me which photos are not Copperplate I can mark them as such if that will make you feel better about our site.

Our site is hardly opinionated, so far as "I hate Copperplate" goes, because we are documenting the font extensively with no commentary. Even if you love Copperplate Gothic, we have educational and informative information available that is largely free of our clearly humorous "hate" slant.

If needed I will take the issue up in the talk page for the entry but I really don't see a reason for all of this. --Pinkfairywand 17:08, 14 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Copperplate again

Actually, I just looked up all the fonts you mentioned, and I can assure you that NONE of the things we call Copperplate Gothic are actually those fonts. The quality of the photos may be iffy, but we are not THAT poor at typography. Clearly the fonts are hard to read in some of our photos and so I can understand your confusion. If we mistake a font for Copperplate it is because the designer took Copperplate and used it as a base for a new font. I'm glad that you can identify so many different typefaces, but again I assure you with 100% certainty that none of the fonts you listed are displayed on our page as Copperplate Gothic. --Pinkfairywand 17:26, 14 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

More typeface stuff

I guess we should have coordinated our classification efforts a little better on the the typeface font. I realized this after I created Category:Incised typefaces and then, only after the fact, realized you had previously created Category:Glyphic serif typefaces. I thought that this grouping could contain serif and sans-serif faces (for example, Trajan vs. Lithos), and because we didn't have an over abundance of incised typefaces, that we could just group them together. So which category should we keep? I'd be happy to speedy delete mine if you feel that is best. If that happened, would we also create Category:IGlyphic sans-serif typefaces? I personally feel we should just group the two together, but also put them in the general serif or sans-serif category as well. Next, I noticed you added two classification of sans-serif faces. Good work with that. The names scheme are different from mine, so do you think we should CfD rename the serif categories so that they all contain the word "serif" in the category? For example Category:Old style typefaces would become Category:Old style serif typefaces. I really am torn on this, because it seems redundant to my ears that an old style face would be serif. However, it may be easier for someone unfamiliar with type classifications if we mention whether the sub cat is serif or san serif (of course, we wouldn't have to rename slab-serif). Anyway, just my thoughts. Do you have any further ideas or concerns with the categorization project we have begun to undertake?

Finally, would could you mind please speedy tagging Category:Humanist sans-serif? Thanks for your good work!-Andrew c 15:22, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia's deletion policy may help you. CfD stands for Categories for discussion, and that is the place where mergers, renames, and deletions are discussed for articles in the category namespace. You can view the CfD I posted for the serif sub-cats in question here: Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2007 May 15#Serif typeface classifications. Next, WP:SPEEDY is a way to delete content without going through the longer process of articles for deletion. Because you created the category and are the sole contributor of Category:Humanist sans-serif, this falls under speedy criteria 7. Therefore, you can simply add {{db-author}} to the top of the page to have an admin delete the category for you. Hope this helps.
As for the classification, as noted above, I have asked to rename the cats I created. I made a mistake and did not remember the exact name of the glyphic/incised category that you created, mentioned above. As for the 3rd category of sans-serif, the one listed in a few of my sources is Grotesque, so we can have Category:Grotesque sans-serif typefaces to house Helvetica, Univers, Arial, Akzidenz Grotesk, etc. I'll get on that now and start going through the sans-serifs to add classification and foundries. -Andrew c 20:32, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Multiple type specimens for same face

I was going through the typeface sample category and noticed things like Image:BodAntiquaSpecimen.svg, Image:BodoniAntiquaSpec.svg, Image:BodonispecAIB.svg, Image:BodonispecimenAIB3.svg, that is 4 different yet very similar images for the same typeface. It seems like, instead of uploading a new version over the old version at a single image article, you simply uploaded a new image article each time. I just wanted to verify that the orphaned specimen (i.e. the ones not currently being used in articles) were mistakes and can be cleared for deletion. We also may want to consider consistent naming, but we can cross that bridge. Assuming that the unused type samples are no longer needed, I'm going to start tagging them for speedy deletion. -Andrew c 01:27, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Folio thanks + Barnstar

Thanks for adding an image to Folio. I was going to do it later this weekend, but you beat me to it;) Also thanks for expanding the info. My intention was to go through the Meggs/Carter book and make sure we had an article on all 25 'great' typefaces, and Folio was the first one I came upon. Any word on the multiple specimen image issue? Thanks again for all your great work.-Andrew c 21:37, 18 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
