Revision as of 17:15, 21 August 2007

The Article Collaboration and Improvement Drive is a fortnightly collaboration to improve articles to featured article status.

/History - For past collaborations.
/Removed - For removed nominations.
/Maintenance - ACID upkeep.

Introduction

To vote or nominate you have to be a registered user with at least one contribution that is not a vote. Anyone who does so is encouraged to make at least one edit per vote or nomination to the currently chosen article, Günter Weitling (random unreferenced BLP of the day for 28 Jun 2024 - provided by User:AnomieBOT/RandomPage via WP:RANDUNREF). Any and all articles may be nominated except:

How to nominate

I
Add nomination

Copy and paste the following template to the bottom of the list of nominations on this page and fill it out.
Please be sure to spell the article correctly, THE NAME IS CASE-SENSITIVE!

After submitting the new nomination, go to the nominated article's talk page and put this at the top:

How to vote

Sign with "# ~~~~" on the end of the list of the article you want to vote for and then update the vote count in the subhead. Opposing votes are not counted; see approval voting. You can vote for as many articles as you like. Additionally you can give a comment in the comment section; use terms such as appalling and shocking sparingly, remember that every editor that has ever edited a nominated article probably did so to the best of his of her ability.

How the article is selected

Article with the most votes every two weeks or so is selected as "The current Article Improvement Drive article". If two articles have same number of votes, the nominee with the higher number of hits per day over the previous month wins. The following template:

{{Template:ACIDcur}}

is placed atop the article talk page.

How an article is removed from the list

Nominated articles remain on this page for three "selections", after which that article entry is removed from and moved to the page for removed nominations.

New nominations go *AT THE BOTTOM* :-)

  • I really haven't had much to do with this article (I might have reverted vandalism on it once or twice ;)), but I feel that such an import subject matter as the atom deserves improvement from the shape this article is in at the moment. I hope others share my view. Cheers -- Anonymous DissidentTalk 09:57, 31 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Article is woefully missing sources, and is poorly organized. It's a very long way from GA standard. JACOPLANE • 2007-08-1 20:38
    • I don't agree with either of those comments. It is organised in a pretty standard way, and the overall level of sourcing is fine. Some Wikipedia articles have too many sources. There is no need to source things that are common knowledge. Cloachland 13:58, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Compare the sourcing of this article with that of Turkey to see how the article should be referenced. I don't see how you could possibly claim that "the overall level of sourcing is fine". JACOPLANE • 2007-08-6 14:01

  • Short article (six paragraphs and a listy section). Important environmental, freshwater/marine biology, fishery topic. Lots of people live in river deltas. I'm guessing around 500 million worldwide (for instance, about 60 million in Vietnam and between 115 and 143 million in the Ganges delta), sometimes to ill effect. 82.71.48.158 19:30, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • This seems like an important environmental article. I'm surprised it's so short for such a large topic. Shrewpelt 19:49, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • The article could easily be improved to GA quality and perhaps even FA quality. There's a very decent start with a number of solid references. There's still plenty to do: an extensive copyedit, an "in popular culture" section that needs to be cleaned up, a more thorough discussion of his legacy, etc. In any case, it's the kind of article where editors with various skills and interests could find something worthwhile to do. The article falls in the scope of a number of projects so it should be easy to gather a good number of competent editors to help out. Of course, James Brown is a key figure in popular music and I just think it would be really nice to have the article featured by the first year of his death (December 25th). GA-Class quality? Didn't realized the quality of the article has slipped that far. The JB article was rated as B-Class, then A-Class quality earlier this year (also noted on the article's talk page) for the Biography and Georgia portals (this article is also rated as "top-importance" for the Georgia Portal). Also, the article was featured on the Music Portal during February 2007. Here's the content of the article at the last edit on February 1 and the last edit on February 28. Since I don't where to find the archives for past featured articles on portals, I don't know which version of the article appeared on the Music Portal during February 2007, especially since the article was also vandalized frequently at that time.

After I spent some time editing the article, I stepped back to take another look at what needs to be done for the article's improvement. Here are my comments for what I think is still needed to improve the article: 'Lwalt ♦ talk

  • The authors have made a good effort, but this article is redundant and is not comprehensive. It covers few aspects of grammar and discusses the language's relation to other Egyptian languages to only a small extent. The article needs a detailed example section, and yet "Simple examples" only repeats several of the concepts stated earlier. In addition, this article contains only seven inline citations. A peer review held last year produced only an automated review; a much more detailed, specialized analysis of the article is needed. Hopefully, those who are not Egypt enthusiasts will understand the rationale for this nomination. --Birdman1 talk/contribs 15:32, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Edit: Another problem with this article is that it does not sufficiently discuss the evolution of the language. --Birdman1 talk/contribs 16:26, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, Egyptian language deals only with Middle Egyptian grammar. Even if Egyptian hieroglyphs deals only with the writing system, it is redundant and is not comprehensive. I think there needs to be some discussion at Talk:Egyptian language. --Birdman1 talk/contribs 16:06, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with the latter part, though I think this article should remain focused on the script, like hieratic and demotic. There are separate articles for the different phases of the language itself, for example, Old, Middle and Late Egyptian, but they are stubs. I think Egyptian language should eventually contain comprehensive information about the language's history/grammar from the Old to the Coptic phases, and the Middle Egyptian grammar can go in its own article. — Zerida 20:02, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Only a Start-class article. Say what you want to about smoking, but it is an extremely important subject and it deserves a better article than it currently has. John Carter 20:54, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • The start-class label was a bit outdated so I upgraded to B-class, since it's 44 k without template, table or list-cruft. It has noticable info gaps in sociology, medicine, physiology, public health effects and modern history, but has a far superior overall coverage when compared to, for example, tobacco smoking.
