Unaizah or Onaizah or Unayzah (Arabic: عنيزة) is a city in the Al Qassim Province, lies south of Buraidah the capital of Al Qassim Province and north of Riyadh the capital of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The population of the town is 128,930 (2004 census). It has a desert climate, with hot dry summers followed by cold winters with little rain.
It is agricultural area and produces wheat and barley of various strains. The region also grows grapes, grapefruits, lemons, mandarins, oranges, pomegranates and dates.
The people of city are famous for being pioneers in education and commerce; from them came the first Saudi male with Phd. Degree (Dr. Abdulazaiz Al-Khweitter); from them also came the first Saudi female with PhD (Dr. Ebtisam Al-Bassam), from them came too the famous religious scholar Muhammad Ibn Uthaimine and he died in it, and in Unaizah there's his mosque which was founded by prince Sultan Ibn Abdulaziz when he came to visit the scholar and there's his charity foundation which was founded by the scholar's family after his death. The people of Unaizah are well known for their hospitality and opens toward people from other races and religions. The famous Charles Montagu Doughty has lived in the city during his odyssey and wrote highly about the city.
Amine Al-Raihani (The famous French scholar) in his book kings of Arabia wrote “Unaizah the Fortress of freedom and the pole literature and art ,Paris of Nejd”. With high regards he also described the Architecture , the buildings and the art works.
The city is ruled by the Al-Sulaim family since 1817. They came to be in power after, Prince Yehya Al-Sulaim killed the Governor appointed by the Ottoman emperor. This dynasty still rules the city according to a written treaty between them and the Saudi royal family.
