Colleen Cecile Carlton is a fictional character from the American soap opera The Young and the Restless. She is currently played by actress Tammin Sursok, who joined the cast in July 2007. Previous actresses in the role were Lyndsy Fonseca (from 2001 to 2004, reappearing briefly from 2004 to 2005) and Adrianne Leon (from January 2006 to July 2007).

Character biography

Colleen is the daughter of Brad Carlton (Don Diamont) and Traci Abbott Connolly (Beth Maitland). When Colleen returned to Genoa City as a rebellious young teen in 2001, she began to develop a marijuana habit. She gave up the drug, when her carelessness nearly resulted in the death of her half-sister, Abby (Darcy Rose Byrnes), whom she was supposed to be babysitting.

Colleen soon made friends with local girls, Lily Winters (Christel Khalil) and Sierra Hoffman (Asia Ray Smith), and began a romance with J. T. Hellstrom (Thad Luckinbill). At first, Colleen's family was wary of the slightly older J.T. as he had a bad track record with women, but they eventually accepted the relationship. When Lily began dating Kevin Fisher (Greg Rikaart), Colleen told her parents when the relationship turned sexual, which was statutory rape. In retaliation, Kevin trapped Colleen in Gina Roma's restaurant and started a fire. Colleen survived, and remained distrustful of Kevin, who had expertly hidden his crimes.

In 2004, Colleen left Genoa City for New York because she felt she was getting in the way of J.T.'s budding music career. She returned in early 2006 expecting to reunite with him, but he had moved on with Mackenzie Browning (Rachel Kimsey). She also was shocked to learn that Kevin had now been accepted by most of the community, Lily included.

After Mac left town, Colleen and J.T. reconciled. She was soon devastated by the loss of her grandfather John Abbott (Jerry Douglas), who died of a massive stroke. She was further rocked by the revelation that her father had assumed the name of Brad Carlton, and was in fact the son of Holocaust survivor and art historian Rebecca (Lorna Raver). The majority of the Kaplan family was killed because Rebecca had made it her life's work to return artwork stolen by the Nazis.

Colleen's romance with Professor Adrian Korbel has proven to be extremely popular among viewers.

Following her grandmother's lead, Colleen began to study art history in college under a man named Adrian Korbel (Eyal Podell). It became apparent to both that this was more than a student/teacher relationship, much to the chagrin of the still in hiding Kaplans and her boyfriend J.T. Colleen used Professor Korbel's knowledge to help solve the mystery of the Grudgeon Reliquary, the artifact that lead to the Kaplan family's murder. Despite her family's objections and a growing possibility that Korbel was involved in the murder of Newman Enterprises executive Carmen Mesta (Marisa Ramirez), Colleen and Adrian made love on Valentine's Day. The Colleen and Adrian pairing (referred to by fans as "Cadrian") quickly gained a large fanbase.

After the tryst, Colleen went to get some water and found Carmen's drivers license and some pink hair extensions and a necklace belonging to missing barista Jana Hawkes (Emily O'Brien). After running out of his home, Colleen was knocked out and taken to a room where Jana appears to trapped as well. Jana told her that Adrian is a murderer, and that he has an accomplice as well. After Colleen tells her of his involvement in the reliquary and how to solve its code, Jana is taken from the room when she offers to exchange the information for her freedom.

After Jana managed to lure Kevin into the room, Jana revealed to the two enemies that she faked her disappearance and killed Carmen Mesta, who knew of her earlier theft of art related documents. Jana and her father wanted the reliquary for themselves, and with Colleen's information, she believed they could have it. In an attempt to cover her tracks, Jana set the building on fire, to frame her boyfriend Kevin, making it appear to be a reprisal of his original attempt on Colleen's life. As both Colleen and Kevin were succumbing to the smoke, J.T. and Korbel managed to save them both. When Colleen recovered, she cleared Kevin's name and the two tentatively forgave each other.

Since breaking up with J.T., she has tried to start a relationship with Adrian, but her family and J.T. have thrown up several roadblocks. After Korbel nearly lost his job, they attempted to feign a break up and continue to see each other, but Sharon Newman (Sharon Case) discovered them and told Brad. As a result, Brad cut his daughter off financially, though Colleen soon overcame this obstacle with a loan from her uncle Jack (Peter Bergman).

After Adrian talked to Brad, as well as Sharon and many others, he finally allowed Colleen to work on the Clear Springs project, on which she would be working with Adrian. The project was cancelled due to Nicholas Newman's (Joshua Morrow) presumed death.

After helping Kevin track down Jana for revenge, Colleen left to stay with her mother for a while. She returned two weeks later and made up with Adrian, with whom she had had a fight shortly before she left.
