No Way Out 2007 was the ninth annual No Way Out pay-per-view event produced by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). It took place on February 18 2007 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.[1] The official theme song was "Powertrip" by Monster Magnet.[2]

The main event was a tag team match pitting SmackDown!'s Batista and The Undertaker against RAW's John Cena and Shawn Michaels, where Cena pinned Undertaker after a Spinebuster from Batista, Sweet Chin Music from Michaels, and an FU from Cena. The main match on the undercard was an interpromotional Six-man tag team match between the team of Chris Benoit and The Hardys (Matt and Jeff) against the team of MNM (Joey Mercury and Johnny Nitro) and Montel Vontavious Porter, which was won by the Hardys and Benoit after Benoit forced Mercury to submit to the Crippler Crossface. The event was the final branded pay-per-view before all pay-per-view events became tri-branded in 2007.[3]

Background

Batista, the World Heavyweight Champion and tag team partner of The Undertaker at this event.

The main feud heading into No Way Out was between SmackDown!'s World Champion Batista and The Undertaker against RAW's WWE Champion John Cena and Shawn Michaels. This feud began after Undertaker won the 2007 Royal Rumble match.[4] The following week on an episode of Friday Night SmackDown!, the two world champions demanded an answer from The Undertaker as to who he would face at WrestleMania, but Michaels would interfered and would also demand an answer from The Undertaker.[5] As they awaited the arrival of The Undertaker, Vince McMahon, the WWE Chairman, came down to the ring and announced an inter-promotional tag team match between the two pairs of brand representatives.[5] On the February 5 2007 episode of Raw, The Undertaker made his decision to face World Heavyweight Champion Batista at WrestleMania 23, as he delivered a chokeslam on Batista.[6] Michaels then became Cena's challenger at WrestleMania 23 after winning a triple-threat match that also featured Randy Orton and Edge.[6] Then on the February 15 2007 episode of Raw, the brand representatives were pitted in an eight-man tag-team match against Rated-RKO (Orton and Edge), Mr. Kennedy, and Montel Vontavious Porter in a controversial match in which the brand representatives were victorious.[7] The RAW representatives then went on to win the World Tag Team Championship, although Michaels made many attempts to superkick Cena during the road to No Way Out.[8] On the February 16 2007 episode of Friday Night SmackDown!, The Undertaker and Batista would again team up to face Rated-RKO, where they were victorious via pinfall.[9]

The secondary main feud heading into No Way Out was between Chris Benoit and The Hardys against MNM and Montel Vontavious Porter (MVP). This feud began shortly after MNM reformed, challenged the reunited Hardys at December to Dismember, where they lost via pinfall.[10] They then continued to wrestle on episodes of RAW, ECW, and Friday Night SmackDown!, until Armageddon, when Mercury suffered a severe facial injury.[11] On the February 16 2007 edition of Friday Night SmackDown!, SmackDown General Manager Theodore Long announced a ladder match between Paul London and Brian Kendrick, Dave Taylor and William Regal, MNM, and The Hardys for the WWE Tag Team Championship, however, the match was changed over WWE.com, where The Hardys and Chris Benoit would tag team to face MNM and Porter, while Kendrick and London would face Deuce N' Domino in a separate match for the WWE Tag Team Championship.[12][13][14][15] Benoit and MVP were feuding at the time over Benoit's United States Championship[16] and were included into the match over WWE.com.[15]

Bobby Lashley, the ECW World Champion heading into the event.

The third feud heading into No Way Out was between Kane and King Booker. This feud began during the 2007 Royal Rumble match when Kane eliminated King Booker from the match, however, Booker returned unofficially to eliminate Kane.[17] The feud then continued on the February 2 2007 episode of Friday Night SmackDown!, during King Booker's Key to the City ceremony in Houston, Texas, where Kane interrupted the ceremony and attacked King Booker.[5] After the continued to feud during the weeks leading up to No Way Out, Theodore Long booked a match between the two at No Way Out.[12] On the February 16 2007 episode of Friday Night SmackDown!, King Booker mocked Kane by dishonestly reviewing Kane's See No Evil movie, but Booker ran out when Kane came in to attack him.[9]

The fourth main feud heading into No Way Out was between Bobby Lashley and Mr. Kennedy. This feud began on the February 23, 2007 episode of Friday Night SmackDown, when Bobby Lashley made a guest appearance to visit Theodore Long.[9] Mr. Kennedy voiced his opinion to Lashley, reminding Lashley that he had beaten him before and claiming that he could to it again. Long then scheduled a match between the two for the ECW World Championship at No Way Out, after he gained approval by contacting ECW officials.[9]

Event

Before the event aired live on pay-per-view, a dark match between Rob Van Dam and Shelton Benjamin took place.[18][19] Van Dam won the match as he pinned Benjamin, after performing a Five-star frog splash.[18][19]The first match that aired, was the six-man tag team match between the team of The Hardys (Matt Hardy and Jeff Hardy) and Chris Benoit against the team of MNM (Johnny Nitro and Joey Mercury) and Montel Vontavious Porter.[18][14] The match began with Porter and Benoit, where Benoit gained the advantage over Porter. The Hardys and Benoit remained with the advantage until MNM got involved in the match, where they illegally double teamed The Hardys, as the referee was distracted.[19][20] Benoit was then tagged into the match, and MNM attempted to deliver a Snapshot onto Benoit. Benoit, however, countered the maneuver into a Crippler crossface onto Mercury, who submitted, thus making The Hardys and Benoit the winners.[21][22][14]

Gregory Helms, the Cruiserweight Champion heading into the event.

The next match was a Cruiserweight Open for the WWE Cruiserweight Championship.[18][23] The match began with Scotty 2 Hotty against Daivari; Hotty eliminated Daivari via pinfall, after performing the Worm.[20] The Cruiserweight Champion, Gregory Helms, then entered the match next and eliminated Hotty via pinfall after he performed a Double knee facebreaker on Hotty.[22] Funaki was the next participant to enter the match, he however, was eliminated via pinfall after Helms performed a Crossbody into a pin, as he held onto Funaki's tights.[19] Shannon Moore was the fifth entrant into the gauntlet, but was eliminated via pinfall after Helms hit a Double knee facebreaker on him.[20] Jimmy Wang Yang, the sixth entrant, eliminated Helms via pinfall after performing a Hurricanrana pin.[19] Jamie Noble was the seventh entrant into the Gauntlet match, however, he was eliminated via pinfall after Yang performed a moonsault into a pin.[21] The final entrant, Chavo Guerrero, pinned Yang after a frog splash, thus winning the match and becoming the new WWE Cruiserweight Champion.[18][19][23]

The third match was a Mixed tag team match between the team of Finlay and Little Bastard against the team of The Boogeyman and Little Boogeyman.[18][19][24] The match started off with Finlay against the Boogeyman, as Little Bastard hid under the ring.[21][22] Finlay gained the advantage over Little Boogeyman as he threw him over the top rope onto ringside, where Little Bastard pulled Little Boogeyman under the ring.[20][25] As Little Bastard finally entered into the ring, he ran out to ringside in fear of The Boogeyman, which led to The Boogeyman chasing him around the ring.[22][25] This distracted the referee, allowing Finlay to hit Little Boogeyman with a shillelagh, proceeded by Finaly covering him for the pin for the win.[18][19][24] The next match was the encounter of King Booker and Kane.[19][18][26] The match started off with Kane with the advantage over Booker and remained with the advantage throughout the beginning of the match. Kane attempted a chokeslam, however, Booker escaped the maneuver, into a Scissors kick. Kane managed to counter it with a clothesline.[20][25] Queen Sharmell, who was at rinside in Booker's corner, distracted Kane allowing Booker to hit him with a heel kick. Kane, however, retaliated by delivering a chokeslam on Booker, proceeded by Kane covering him, thus Kane won the match via pinfall.[19][21][26] The fifth match was a WWE Tag Team Championship Tag team match between the team of Deuce 'N Domino against the defending champions, Paul London and Brian Kendrick.[18][19][13] There was back and forth action between the two teams in the beginning of the match, however, Deuce 'N Domino gained the advantage over Kendrick and London, as they worked over on London, not allowing him to tag in his partner, Kendrick.[21][22] London however, was able to tag Kendrick into the match, where Domino attempted an aerial attack from the top rope; he however, missed Kendrick with the attack, allowing Kendrick to roll him up for the pin. Therefore, London and Kendrick won the match and retained the WWE Tag Team Championship.[19][25][13]

John Cena and Shawn Michaels, the World Tag Team Champions and RAW representatives at this event.

The sixth match was an ECW World Championship match between defending champion Bobby Lashley and Mr. Kennedy.[18][19][27] As Kennedy made his entrance towards the ring, Lashley attacked Kennedy on the aisle, delaying the start of the match.[20][22] As Lashley and Kennedy finally entered the ring, Kennedy attempted many submission holds to no avail, but continued to attack Lashley in an attempt to keep him from getting up.[22][25] Kennedy then left the ring to get a steel chair, but Lashley took the chair and attacked Kennedy with it, which caused the referee to end the match as a result of a disqualification. Therefore, Kennedy won the match, but due to WWE rules, Lashley retained the ECW World Championship.[21][27] After the match, Lashley hit Kennedy with a steel chair repeatedly until WWE officials ran in to control Lashley.[18][19][27]

After the sixth match, there was a Diva Talent Invitational hosted by The Miz featuring divas from SmackDown!, RAW and vixens from ECW. First, Extreme Expose danced to Rich Boy's Boy Looka Here.[21][28] Then, Jillian Hall sang a song, but The Miz stopped her from continuing.[20][22] Candice Michelle, Ariel, and Maria came out next, but before they presented their talent, a catfight broke out among the three divas.[19][21] Ashley then came out, but before she made her way down to the ring, she took her top off to reveal her breasts covered with pasties in the form of the playboy logo. The Miz then declared Ashley the winner of the Diva Talent Invitational.[20][21][28]

The main event was an inter-promotional tag-team match between SmackDown!'s Batista and The Undertaker against RAW's tag team champions John Cena and Shawn Michaels.[18][19][29] The match started off with Cena and Batista, with Batista gaining the advantage over Cena. The Undertaker and Batista then continued to work over Cena and Michaels before throwing them over the top rope to ringside.[21][22] As Cena returned into the ring, he attempted to deliver an FU on Batista, but The Undertaker interfered, allowing Batista to counter the maneuver into a Batista bomb, which Cena managed to escape after Michaels interfered.[20][25] As Batista gave Shawn Michaels a Spinebuster, The Undertaker delivered a chokeslam on Cena.[25][29] Which proceeded to The Undertaker preparing to perform a Tombstone piledriver on Cena, however, Batista turned on The Undertaker, as he delivered a Spinebuster on him, which proceeded with Batista exiting the ring, allowing Michaels to perform Sweet Chin Music and Cena to perform an FU on The Undertaker. Cena then pinned The Undertaker for the win.[18][19][29]

Aftermath

Mr. Kennedy winning the Money in the Bank ladder match at WrestleMania 23.

After No Way Out, The Undertaker continued his feud with Batista over the World Heavyweight Championship, where at WrestleMania 23 he pinned Batista to win the World Heavyweight Championship.[30] Shawn Michaels however, was unable to win the WWE Championship, as he submitted to John Cena's STFU, thus Cena retained the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 23.[31] After Kane defeated King Booker at No Way Out, the two continued to feud on SmackDown! in a Money in the Bank qualifying match on the February 23 2007. The feud, however, would end after Booker defeated Kane to qualify for the Money in the Bank ladder match, as Kane would begin a feud with The Great Khali, who came out to the ring to attack Kane after the Money in the Bank qualifying match.[32] However, at WrestleMania 23, Kane lost to Khali via pinfall.[33]

After No Way Out, The Hardys would qualify for the Money in the Bank ladder match at WrestleMania 23, however they were unsuccessful on winning the match, [8][34] as Mr. Kennedy qualified and won the Money in the Bank ladder match at WrestleMania 23.[35] Chris Benoit and Montel Vontavious Porter would also continue to feud over the WWE United States Championship, where Benoit would successfully defend his championship against Porter at WrestleMania 23, where he forced Porter to submit to the Crippler crossface, thus Benoit winning the match and retaining the United States Championship.[36] After this event, MNM's reunion ended, as Joey Mercury was released by WWE on March 26 2007.[37] After Bobby Lashley was disqualified at No Way Out, he was chosen to represent Donald Trump at WrestleMania 23 against Vince McMahon's representative, Umaga, in the Battle of the Billionaires: Hair vs. Hair match.[8] Lashley won the match at WrestleMania, thus winning the match and the right for Trump to shave McMahon's head.[38][39]
