Russian WP and Irish towns
I've taken the liberty of informing the folks at the WikiProject Ireland of your interest in the naming process for these articles. I hope that's not a problem for you.

As you indicated, the naming/language issue in Ireland is sometimes fraught with conflicts. Often, issues of sovereignty and relations with England are inextricably involved in the discussion. Strong opinions are held and it can be difficult to get agreement. Anglicizing place names is a way of both internationalizing as well as erasing local language and culture.

On the English Wikipedia, the current convention is to put the town under the Anglicized name with the Irish language version at the top in the lede. However, a different language WP like Russian means it doesn't have to follow English WP convention. Actually, a very good argument can be made that another language WP should go with the native language version of the town name, not the Anglicized version. I suspect what you really need is more input on the matter to hash it out.

I'm going to drop a message to Wikipedia:WikiProject Ireland/Gaeilge as well because they will undoubtedly be interested in this discussion. Cheers, Pigman☿ 20:39, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

Revision as of 20:39, 4 April 2008

This is my talkpage. I don't visit English Wikipedia too often (about one time per 1-2 days), so if you need to contact me urgently, feel free to edit my Russian Wikipedia talk page, or email to obersachse@googlemail.com.

If you write me, you'll receive an answer here. If I write you, I will watch your talkpage for several days.

Location map

Thank you, Thomas! I should have probably checked back on that thread after I watchlisted it :)—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 13:10, 7 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Two points. (1) position=top and position=bottom don't seem to work anymore. (2) your test-case for Infobox City isn't valid, since the Location map template is embedded within the Infobox City template. You need to create a test-case Infobox City which contains your Template:Location map/Temp . Cheers. (Caniago 17:29, 24 March 2007 (UTC))[reply]

This does not seem to be working correctly. It places the dot in the Gulf of Mexico. —MJCdetroit 20:55, 24 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I see. Somebody has changed the Template:Location map. See the example in ruwiki ru:Лас-Вегас (Невада) or dewiki (de:Las Vegas). There's the same Location map USA. -Obersachse 21:27, 24 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Russian raion maps

Obersachse - I've added a section to my Map gallery HERE. As I complete the maps, I will add them to my gallery here on English wiki (as well as on Commons). If you have any input on the format, colors, etc. from WikiProject Russia, let me know. Otherwise I will use the standard pastels and such that I've used on many other administrative level maps. Would you consider dual licensing your edits to location map and related template under the cc-by 2.5? This way I could use them on the english wikinews. Happy editing. Bawolff 01:15, 30 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Of course! Feel free to use my wikipedia-contributions for whatever You want. Choose the license, that allows you to use my work as free and comfortable as possible. --Obersachse 05:36, 30 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Offensive username

??? No account with this name exists in the English Wikipedia. Yours was the only edit to the userpage. Did you land on this name from another wiki, perhaps? Anyway, I speedied the page. Sorry, I don't think you're a vandal. That's why I informed you. Whit a vandal I wouldn't waste my time. --Obersachse (talk) 18:31, 28 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Since when have blue and green been an "awful" combination? Green for the land and blue for the sea is a lot closer than having the land as beige (unless the article is on the sahara desert of course). ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ Talk? 10:54, 25 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please have a look at the other location maps. They are more neutral. The most importand thing are the border and the location of the point. Other stuff gives additional information, but should not catch the eye. That is what I mean with "awful combination". The blue sea and the green forest is not the most important information on location maps. For geographical or topographical maps the colour is important, but not here. --Obersachse (talk) 18:31, 28 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Germany Invitation

Hello, Obersachse! I'd like to call your attention to the WikiProject Germany and the German-speaking Wikipedians' notice board. I hope their links, sub-projects and discussions are interesting and even helpful to you. If not, I hope that new ones will be.
