Hindupur is a city and a municipality in Anantapur district in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Hindupur was given its name by a Maratha Chieftain called Murari Rao, who apparently named this town after his father Hindoji Rao. Hindupur is historically famous for various goods such as silk, jaggery etc.

It is situated at a distance of 100 kilometers from the Garden city of Bengaluru and 14 kilometers from Lepakshi. The nearest airport is Bengaluru"s International Airport- Devanahalli (70 km),Hyderabad (460 km) & Chennai (400 km).

Geography

Hindupur is located at 13°50′N 77°29′E / 13.83°N 77.49°E / 13.83; 77.49.[1] It has an average elevation of 621 metres (2037 feet). Hindupur is located 100 km from Anantapur and Bangaluru cities.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[2] Hindupur had a population of 125,056. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Hindupur has an average literacy rate of 62%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 69%, and female literacy is 55%. Bordering Karnataka, Kannada is widely spoken in this town, in addition to the native language of Telugu.

People and Culture

Though Hindupur is part of Anantapur district, it doesn't exhibit any of the fierce factionism and feudal politics of Rayalaseema. Hindupur has a vibrant Muslim population , also dominated by Arya Vysya community and was native constituency of NTR (Nandamuri Taraka Ramarao).this town is famous for business. It is also famous for NTR fans. And famous freedom fighter Kalluri Subbarao hails from this city. Hindupur has several junior colleges which has produced state first ranks more than 5 times in the last ten years. One college with name Bala Yesu Vidyalaya got State first twice and it is amazing that students with no special resources get these results with their hard wark and intelligence. 80% of youth of hindupur works in major cities like Bangalore, hyderabad and Pune. It is very interesting that youth is never silent in this town. It is simple and beautiful but only problem is lack of water and water is not scarce but it is inadequate.

The Peaceful Political situation here is fast giving way to intensely polar politico-Social climate here with the Congress and TDP vying for the hold of this famed constituency.

Economy

Businesses here were historically based on sale and trade of Jaggery, Tamarind,Red chilles, Silk and others. This is fast being complemented by iron works, heavy truck BodyBuidling and other vehicular services. These buinesses are dominated by a vibrant Muslim population present here.In Hindupur, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Lately, Much affluence seems to affecting the city via neighboring Bangalore in a "Ripple Down" Effect. A nearby village called Muddireddi Palli has become a hot bed for silk saree production, something which has bought it enormous riches. With the International Airport coming at Devanahalli(Karnataka) the surroundings of Hindupur are set become hot properties.

Places to Visit Nearby

Lepakshi is a small village, which lies 15-km east of Hindupur in Anantapur District of Andhra Pradesh. It is the most important place in the district from the historical and archaeological point of view. A trip to Lepakshi is revitalising for those who believe in heritage sites, for those who marvel at the art. The place is renowned as the repository of the best mural paintings of the Vijayanagara Kings.

Lepakshi is also very well known for having the Nandi idol which is known to be the India's biggest single rock Nandi idol. Viduraswatha is the Place for having Nageswara Swami idols.

Main Deity- Idol of bhagawan Parshwanatha in the Kayotsarga posture.

The Bhagwan Prahwanatha Jain temple here is very ancient and the idol of Parshwanatha (11th and 12th C AD) is a unique of its kind. Devotees from different parts of Karnataka visit this place. Along with the idol of bhagwan Parshwanatha we can find many other Jain idols.

Guidance- Penukonda is situated in the Ananthpur district of Andhra. Good transport facilities are available to this place from Ananthpur. The boarding and lodging facilities are available at the Dharmashala inside the compound of the temple.

There are more than 365 Temples in Penukonda and it is possible to visit one temple each day throughout the year without repeating.

Hemavati: This is the famous for ancient Siddeswara(Henjerappa) and Doddeswara Temples built by Nolamba pallava kings in the 9th century. Here every year in Sivaratri big jatra will be conducted. Thousands of devotees will attend this jatra evrey year. This is 70 km from Hindupur.

Civic issues

Hindupur is prone to intense heat during the summer and ground water reserves in this area are scarce. This region is prone to Droughts during summers.

Hospitals and Emergency Facilities are largely inadequate at best and many people are infected by diseases like Cholera, Diarrhea in summers and ChikunGunya, malaria and Dengue in Winters.

Hindupur's future expansion is severely restricted due to the scarcity of water. Its municipal corporation has largely failed to provide sustainable water reserves for this city and it is not uncommon to see people buying water at premium prices(Lately around 2 rupeees / bucket),usually through private "Tankers". These tankers basically pump out water using powerful borewells, essentially depleting ground water reserves
