Biography
Early life
White was born 1976 in Miami, Florida and raised in Nassau, Bahamas, and Miami. Her father is Bahamian American, and Latina and her mother is a Caucasian American.[citation needed] At the age of three, she earned a scholarship to the Nassau Civic Ballet Company. At age eight, she jointed the Miami Coconut Grove Children's Theater. As a teen, White studied dance, acting, singing, and painting.[2]
Career
White has appeared in various independent films, including Red Letters (opposite Peter Coyote) and the cult horror Blood Dolls. She starred in the made-for-TV movies Operation Sandman (opposite Ron Perlman), and Suddenly, opposite Kirstie Alley. Her television work includes guest starring roles on Angel, NYPD Blue, The Steve Harvey Show, Brooklyn South, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, as well as a series regular role on Breaker High with co-star Ryan Gosling. In 2008, White appeared in The Fall of Night, as the character Dawn. She can also be seen in Chrisette Michele's video, "Be OK".
Advocacy
White is also a human rights advocate, a vegan, animal rights activist, and environmentalist. She was honored by PETA as a 2005 Humanitarian of the Year.[2] She is an active member of the Humane Society of the United States, Global Green, Farm Sanctuary, PETA, and the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.[3] White is a member of the Church of Scientology and its affiliated Citizens Commission on Human Rights.[4][5]
White also co-produced the award-winning documentary Earthlings, narrated by Joaquin Phoenix.[6]
Personal life
White announced on her MySpace blog that she married her boyfriend, musician Saul Williams on February 29, 2008.[7]
Tattoos
White was on the cover of Urban Ink magazine and talked about her many tribal design tattoos:
I have two magnolias. They’re an homage to the South and Billie Holiday’s song "Strange Fruit" about the lynchings which occurred there–a reminder of how beauty can come from tragedy. The black bars mark change, like marks on a tree. The other is about a negative space; how we must embrace it. We must have the balance of yin and yang. My first tattoo is the cross on my back. I was in my 20s. I had it placed on my spine opposite a chakra point. It represents my life’s journey; moving forward. I have lost work over my tattoos! However, I knew the risks of being inked, especially as a woman in Hollywood, and I was willing to live with them. At the same time, the writers for Girlfriends have worked my tattoos into the script. I play an edgy character, so it works. Every season the writers ask to see my new tattoos. They have also blurred the lines a bit between the real me and my character–she’s a vegan and I’m a vegan. It’s pretty cool! As a celebrity with tattoos, I’m promoting tattoos–like it or not. I have a responsibility to be a good role model.[8]
