"Love Sex Magic"
Song
B-side"Go Girl"

"Love Sex Magic" is the worldwide hit and second US single from Ciara's third studio album, Fantasy Ride, and the lead single for the album elsewhere. The single was co-written by and features Justin Timberlake with production coming from new production group The Y's.[2] After receiving heavy airplay on US radio from March 3, 2009, it was made available for download in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the US from March 17. It was released as a download in the UK and Europe on April 5, 2009.

Ciara and Timberlake performed the song on Saturday Night Live and Ciara went on to perform the song alone on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and Jimmy Kimmel Live. The song is track #12 on the compilation album, Now! 31.

Since the single's release, it has become Ciara's biggest international hit to date, charting in the top ten in numerous countries worldwide, and peaking at number one in Taiwan, India, and Turkey.[3]

Background

On November 16, 2008 Ciara confirmed at WildJam '08 that one of the reasons her album would be delayed was due to her having the opportunity to work in the studio with Justin Timberlake.[4]

In several countries such as Argentina the demo version of the song titled “Magic” was able to chart inside the top 50 due to heavy airplay.[5][6] It was during recording sessions that the track became a duet and was subsequently renamed "Love Sex Magic".

Reception

Billboard.com editor Chris Williams gives the single a favorable review, saying:

"the pair definitely has chemistry, trading off heated vocals that add fire to an already spicy lyric: "I ain't gonna stop you if you wanna crowd my neck/Talk sexy to me like that." It has a subtle retro funk groove generates enough sparks of its own to entice the pop crowd onto the dancefloor."[7]

Editor Lauren Carter from the Boston Herald writes that the song is "not quite magic, but it grows on you."[8] Ryan Brockington of New York Post's online website Popwrap says that the record sounds roughly like Justin Timberlake's single, "Rock Your Body", from his debut album Justified.[9]

Bill Lamb of About.com felt that while the song "doesn't have the lyrical potency of 'Like a Boy'", he gave the song a generally positive review, saying that "fans of sparkling dance-pop are likely to smile". He also wrote that the "vocal magnetism between Ciara and Justin" is "real" and refreshing. Lamb also notes that it "rides a beat that brings simultaneous echoes of 70's R&B and classic Janet Jackson".[10]

Digital Spy gave the song a positive review: "it's a squelchy electro-funk tune powered by a bassline that practically goads your pelvis into grinding. "Imagine if there was a million me's talking sexy to you like that," Ciara purrs, and Timberlake, if you'll pardon the pun, more than rises to the occasion. All in all, 'Love Sex Magic' is pretty much spot on".[11]

Chart performance

The single officially impacted Top 40/Mainstream radio on March 3, 2009.[12] The song debuted at number 86 on the Billboard Hot 100 but managed to jump to 27 in its second week. In the following week the song rose to number 10. This has been Ciara's biggest radio single since "Oh" featuring Ludacris, which reached #6 on the Billboard Pop 100 chart in mid 2005.

The song also reached the Top 10 on Canadian Hot 100, which is her first Top 10 in Canada since reaching #1 there in 2004 with "1,2 Step". In Australia, the song debuted at #6, whilst in New Zealand "Love Sex Magic" debuted at #14.

On April 12, 2009 "Love Sex Magic" entered the UK Singles Chart at #6 on downloads alone, before moving up to #5 on its second week, becoming Ciara's highest charting single in the UK since "Oh" reached #4 in 2005.[13] It has also reached #1 the UK R&B Singles Chart.

Since the single's release, it has been noted as Ciara's biggest single to date, charting high in numerous countries worldwide, and peaking at number one in Taiwan, the United Kingdom, India, and Turkey.[14]

Music video

The music video for "Love Sex Magic" premiered on March 22, 2009.[15] It premierd on Ciara’s official website on March 23, 2009.[16] It was directed by Diane Martel.[17]

Ciara stated in a SayNow fan message on February 19, that she and Timberlake would be shooting the music video the following day in New York.[6]

Fashion designer Melody Ehsani reported that she had some involvement with the video, mainly in creating some of the jewelry including ‘’4-Finger Chain-ring’’.[18]

The theme for the music video, as Ciara stated in a recent MTV interview, is a "Love-Sex-Magic Show", inspired by the Crazy Horse Cabaret (also known as Le Crazy Horse de Paris), a Parisian cabaret known for its stage shows performed by purposely undistinguished female dancers and is a popular venue for other artists, including magicians, jugglers, and mimes.

Concept

Ciara as a tigress in a cage in the official music video for "Love Sex Magic"

The video opens with Ciara (with a ponytail) and Justin Timberlake face to face, caressing seductively as in a manner of foreplay, as Ciara sings the first verse. Quick scenes cut to Ciara who appears almost impervious to gravity, dressed in lingerie, maneuvering around a horizontal dance pole (with four background dancers), and veiled in vibrant colour schemes and alternating strobe lights. The video cuts to Ciara in a leotard, posing in abstract and flexible poses throughout the first chorus. Ciara is then seen dressed in a tiger-striped cat-suit performing solo dance moves on a stage. The second verse begins with Timberlake seated on stage and Ciara performing intricate tricks (such as singer snaking her way under his legs) as he sings his verse. Then the two begin to lightly move to the track before Ciara forms her body as if to be an armrest as he leans on her. The second chorus cuts back to the stage scene where Ciara and the dancers perform choreography and cabaret-style moves on the pole. The bridge of the song cuts to Timberlake on the ground and Ciara, standing over him, turning around and performing her signature "Matrix" over him as he guides her body toward his with his right hand. The two perform and then as Ciara gets up, Timberlake smacks her side as she pops to the beat. The video then cuts to a scene with Ciara in the catsuit, portraying a "tiger in a cage". In the final scene, Ciara and the dancers perform, dressed in 70's-inspired tuxedo-suits and colored afros. Then the video ends with collective clips of Ciara's multiple performance scenes from throughout the video.

Reviews

Digital Spy gave the video a positive review: "The video that accompanies this track is one of the year's best so far - and certainly the sexiest: Ciara licks Justin's ear, Justin reciprocates by slapping her bum, and, well, Ciara's flexibility would put many a poledancer to shame. Quite frankly, the whole thing could make a nun have impure thoughts".[19]
