Carly Shay (Miranda Cosgrove) is the 13 to 14-year old (14-15 in Season 2) star of her own popular web show, iCarly. She has a quirky sense of humor, which is most evident when she is filming the web show. She is also level-headed and can be quite motherly: she often acts as a mediator when her two closest friends, Sam and Freddie, get into arguments, and even keeps her eccentric older brother Spencer grounded at times.

Her birthday is on January 14. She lives with her 26-year-old (27 in Season 2) brother Spencer in the Bushwell Plaza, an apartment in Seattle, and Freddie is a neighbor that lives in the apartment right across the hall. Carly and Spencer's father is stationed on a submarine. She has a best friend, Sam Puckett. Carly is known as a local celebrity, which sometimes helps her get out of sticky situations, but remains an average teenage girl who never lets fame get to her head. Carly sticks up for Freddie when Sam teases him, and tries to encourage Sam to stay out of trouble, which never works. Carly is very aware of Freddie's crush on her, but just shrugs it off for the most part because the chance of them going out is extremely small due to the fact that many other boys have a crush on her, and likewise, many other girls have a crush on him. She is usually a cool-headed person, but when annoyed she tends to act out in a loud voice. Carly is quite intelligent and hates to lie about anything or anyone, implied in the episode iPromise Not to Tell, where she was overtaken by guilt when forced to keep Sam's actions a secret. Carly has very high grades in school and was even offered a scholarship to Briarwood Middle School a rich kid school, an elite private school in iMight Switch Schools. Carly is the most mature character on the show and is usually the mediator between Sam and Freddie, though Carly and Sam do get into quarrels where Freddie becomes the mediator like in iDon't Want to Fight. It is revealed in iWanna Stay with Spencer that Carly has asthma, though she states that she has not had an attack since she was seven years old (Spencer kept her inhaler anyway, just in case). She is sometimes tough on Spencer, as seen in iFence, when she demanded that he stop fencing after she was forced to stay with her cousins, and made him clean up the kitchen. In addition, she is usually the one who scolds Spencer for acting the way he does, although sometimes, there have been situations wherein it was the other way around, meaning that Spencer is the one who scolds Carly, such as in iLook Alike, when she deliberately disobeyed him by going to a mixed martial arts match that Spencer told her not to go.

Sam Puckett (born on April 17, 1993 in Chicago, Illinois) (Jennette McCurdy) is Carly's best friend and co-host of iCarly. She frequently gets into trouble, bullies other kids at school, and shows blatant lack of regard for rules. Sam often relies on Carly to get her out of trouble (as seen in episodes such as iPilot and iOwe You. Sam can be selfish, lazy, and somewhat indifferent to others' feelings. She has a very poor work ethic, and thus often has to be bribed with food by Carly. However, she is also lighthearted and funny, and capable of coming through for her friends when needed.

It is implied that Sam has somewhat of a dysfunctional home life: her mother has never appeared on the show, and seems to show little concern for her daughter's whereabouts or well-being. Sam was born on a bus, which she explains with "My mom's not good at planning!" (iPromote Techfoots). She also mentions in several episodes that she has many family members on parole or in jail. She spends much of her time at Carly's apartment rather than at home.

A major turning point between Sam and Freddie occurred in Season 2. In the episode iKiss, she reveals that Freddie has never kissed a girl, and he gets mocked and humiliated as a result. She then reveals that she has never kissed anyone either, and tells everyone to leave him alone, and in the end, she and Freddie kiss. They go back to hating each other for now (at least in public). This seemed to show that while Sam likes to bully Freddie, she still seems to care for him enough to not let others bully him as well. She not only tends to bully Freddie, but also insults any girl who is attracted to him (even her own look-alike). Sam loves to argue, and appears to have 'never' lost a bet with Freddie, as they've made foolish bets. Still, for the time being, Freddie continues to get the brunt of her aggression and Carly is the good influence in her life. In iMake Sam Girlier, it was mentioned that she wears boxer shorts and not panties to school. Sam has a picture of Drake Bell in her locker. She has two ex-boyfriends: Frankie Murkin (from elementary) and Jonah (Freddie's friend). Both suffered major consequences when they hurt Sam. She is a trouble maker, lets fame go to her head, and is extremely lazy, and as a result she's in detention most of the time and gets in trouble with Principal Franklin and Mrs. Briggs frequently. She once "stole" money from kids off the internet and ran into trouble with the law. She owed Carly and Freddie $526, but spent it on a trampoline. In the episode iMeet Fred, Sam tells the audience that she enjoys tormenting people. Sam has been arrested three times, although no details on the crimes she was charged with have ever been written into the show.

Fredward "Freddie" Benson

Fredward "Freddie" Benson
First appearanceiPilot
Portrayed byNathan Kress
In-universe information
OccupationStudent, Tech Producer, viral webstar
FamilyMarissa Benson (mother)
Mr. Benson (Dad: left the family when Freddie was 1 year old)
Great Grandfather (born May 2, 1889 - November 5, 1941)
Stephanie (Baby cousin)
Jennifer (aunt)

Freddie Benson (Nathan Kress) is the technical producer of iCarly. He has had a crush on Carly since the pilot episode, which he does not attempt to keep secret. Freddie is somewhat of a nerd: he takes his school work very seriously and is the technology "buff" of the show, plus he shows strong interests in works of fiction, and is also an athlete (he can fence and play tennis). Despite his characterization as a nerd, he has still earned heartthrob status, which means that many girls at school have a crush on him (and as a result are all insulted by Sam). He is also characterized as high-strung and somewhat of a stickler for following rules (as seen in the episode iGot Detention), although these traits mellow out slightly by the end of the first season.

Freddie is allergic to bees, and has a very overprotective mother, who often treats him as though he is much younger than he really is (by doing things like giving him "tick baths," insisting that he sleep with a night light, and taking him to see Santa Clause). Mrs. Benson worries constantly about Freddie's safety, with the result that she frequently tries to hold him back from activities that he wants to do or that Carly and Sam are involved in. In iDon't Want to Fight, Freddie expresses the fear that if he didn't have the web show to work on, he would be stuck doing things with his mother every day. In this way, Carly, Sam, and the web show have helped Freddie separate himself from his mother's extreme overprotectiveness and grow into a more independent and confident person. His great- grandfather was born on May 2, 1889 and died on November 5, 1941

Although Freddie considers both Carly and Sam his closest friends, his relationships with the two girls are very different. While Carly constantly rejects Freddie's romantic feelings for her, she also treats him with respect, openly appreciates his importance to the web show, and sticks up for him as a friend. Freddie's relationship with Sam, on the other hand, is more tumultuous and unpredictable. Sam frequently teases Freddie, shows disregard for his feelings, and even hurts him physically when she is annoyed with him (such as twisting his arm in iMeet Fred). In addition, not only does she like to bully him, but she also insults any girl who is attracted to him (which even includes her own look-alike in the episode iLook-Alike). Freddie and Sam constantly get into arguments and make bets with one another, which usually culminate in Freddie's defeat. However, on occasion, both characters have also shown affection for one another, confirming that the two really are friends. Sam becomes Freddie's first kiss in iKiss, although they agree that it is "just to get it over with."

Freddie is also good friends with Carly's brother Spencer. Freddie sometimes comes to Spencer for advice, although often Spencer's help is more amusing than useful. Other friends that Freddie has are people from the AV Club at school (which Freddie is a part of), whom he sometimes mentions or meets at the Groovy Smoothie. The only two dates Freddie has had throughout the course of the show are with Valerie (in the episode iWill Date Freddie, who turns out to only be using him to try to create a web show of her own), and Shannon, another girl at school who had a huge crush on him, even getting so flirty with him that it made him somewhat nervous, although he still liked her looks and personality. Both of these girls were insulted by Sam for being attracted to him.

Spencer Shay

OccupationArtist, Junkyard stuff finder, Bassist, filmmaker, mini-golf maker, viral webstar, dental assistant, Tech producer
FamilyCarly Shay (sister)

Mrs. Shay (mother)

Ms. Lauren Ackerman (ex-girlfriend)

Stephanie (ex-girlfriend)

Spencer Shay (born November 11, 1981 in Los Angeles, California) (Jerry Trainor) is Carly's 26-year-old brother in season 1 and 27 in season 2. Spencer went to law school for three days, but left to become an artist because it was his real dream (although he still has some legal knowledge). He sometimes is strict to Carly because he wouldn't let her go to the MMA fight in iLook Alike. He works as a sculptor and artist, a common plot device on iCarly, and some of his work is seen in his apartment. Spencer occasionally stars on iCarly, and at one point took over as a cameraman when Freddie hosted the show.

He'll do anything to meet a woman, though he always gets involved with women that can be described as "weirdos". Spencer frequently mentions a friend named Socko that sells him crazy socks, Socko's brother Tyler who's sells ties, Socko's cousin Otto who sells autos, Socko's uncle Rob who robs things, Socko's friend Freight Dog who flies a plane carrying freight (and carries Carly, Sam, Freddie, Spencer, and Mrs. Benson to Japan) and Socko's cousin Taylor, who is a tailor. None of them except Rob and Freight Dog, have ever been seen on the show. As a running gag, whenever Spencer builds or fixes something it spontaneously catches fire (or explodes, according to Carly) which, surprisingly, includes a drumset. While he is usually very weird and funny, there have been times when he has proven that he can be very serious when it counts, such as in the episodes iWanna Stay with Spencer and iLook Alike. In the former episode, one of his sculptures almost harms Carly by flinging a hammer at her head, which, luckily, she ducks under. Their grandfather reprimands him, but later Spencer gives Carly her asthma inhaler just as she was about to leave to move to Yakima, which he has had since Carly was seven. This causes the grandfather to change his mind and let her stay with Spencer. Spencer also once saved Tom Higgenson's (lead singer of the Plain White T's) life from a big menu board. In a later episode, Carly asks Spencer to convince Freddie's mother to let her and her friends go to a mixed martial arts match, but Spencer states that he agrees with Freddie's mother and tells them not to go, so they try to trick him by having three look-alikes stand in for them, but he doesn't fall for it, and then figures out that they went to the match anyway, where he confronts and scolds Carly on camera, causing a mixed martial artist named Jackson Colt, who Carly was interviewing, to think he's threatening her and then knock him unconscious. At the end of the episode, the awoken and battered Spencer angrily states that he will punish Carly for disobeying him and tricking him, which resulted in him getting injured, but Carly does not hear him, because she is doing iCarly upstairs. After the show ends, it can be assumed that she received her punishment from Spencer after finishing the webshow.

Recurring characters

Marissa Benson

Marissa S. Benson
First appearanceiWanna Stay with Spencer
Portrayed byMary Scheer
In-universe information
OccupationSingle mother
FamilyFreddie (son)
Jonathan Benson (ex-husband: married 1991-1995)
Lewbert (ex-boyfriend)
Jennifer (sister)

Marissa Benson (born on July 8, 1971 in Fort Worth, Texas) (Mary Scheer) is Freddie's nosy, over-protective mother, seemingly bordering on psychotic at times. She always treats Freddie like a baby and won't let him have any freedom; she even had a GPS chip put in his head as a toddler, revealed in iGo to Japan, however Freddie does not know this, though he can hear it when it is activated. She always wants Freddie to be clean, tidy and very well mannered at all times, occasionally barging in or interrupting Freddie during conversations to remind him of such things as shampooing twice (he signs a shampoo agreement to prove it) , putting on clean "anti-bacterial" underwear, or participating in his bi-weekly body inspections for ticks, though he says he was too old. In iHurt Lewbert, she and Lewbert almost became a couple, but they broke up after Freddie faked an injury. Also, on account of Marissa embarrassing Freddie in front of people, Sam is usually there at these times, and she finds Marissa embarrassing Freddie enjoyable. She is also very talented at fencing like Freddie, talented enough to defeat three teenagers at once (iFence).

Granddad Shay

Granddad Shay
First appearanceiWanna Stay with Spencer
Portrayed byGreg Mullavy
In-universe information
OccupationRetired
FamilyCarly (granddaughter)
Spencer (grandson)
Barry (son)
Mr. Shay (in Navy)
Faye (granddaughter)
Ozlottis (grandson)

Granddad Shay (Greg Mullavy) is the grandfather of Spencer and Carly, first seen in iWanna Stay with Spencer. He lives in Yakima, and after seeing Spencer's irresponsibility as Carly's guardian, he decides to bring Carly to live with him in Yakima, which also could be the end of iCarly. By the end of the episode, he was impressed how Spencer really cared for his little sister, and decided that Carly will remain with him. He also appeared in iWant a World a Record.

Lewbert

Lewbert
First appearanceiWant More Viewers
Portrayed byJeremy Rowley
In-universe information
OccupationDoorman
FamilyMother
Marissa Benson (ex-girlfriend)
ReligionJewish

Lewbert (Jeremy Rowley) is the mean, nasty doorman of Carly's apartment building. He is 30 years old and his birthday is on September 13. He has a big, gross wart on his cheek. He is featured on the bit "Messin' with Lewbert" on iCarly, where they pull pranks on him and tell the viewers what a horrible person he is. He had a short romance with Freddie's mom when he got hurt, but didn't last because of his rude and selfish personality. Lewbert is overprotective of his lobby and gained the nickname Captain Wartburger by Jonah (Freddie's friend and Sam's ex-boyfriend).

Nevel Papperman

Nevel Papperman
First appearanceiNevel
Portrayed byReed Alexander
In-universe information
OccupationCrashing iCarly
Web critic
FamilyMrs. Papperman (mother)
Grandma

Nevel Papperman (Reed Alexander) is a brilliant 11-year old (12 in Season 2) kid and the primary antagonist of the show. He reviews internet sites on his website nevelocity.com. He has a crush on Carly, but Carly refused to go out with him and then smashed tapenade in his face, so he got revenge by giving their webshow a bad review. His biggest fear is his mom; shown when Carly told his mother that he had written a bad review of her purely out of spite. Nevel tried to ruin iCarly by hacking the site, but Carly called her father's friend, Colonel Morgan, who foiled the plan. In Carly's alternate dimension of iChristmas, if Spencer was born normal, Nevel is shown as Carly's boyfriend. Their terms of meeting are unknown as iCarly does not exist in that time line, although for reasons unexplained he apparently is a Ridgeway student in the alternate timeline, even though he goes to an unnamed, different school in the main continuity. He tried to kiss Carly in the episode iNevel. He reappeared in iGive away A Car, where he set up a car contest on iCarly. This was a trick, so Carly, Sam, and Freddie had to get Nevel a car or the LCC would shut down iCarly. He stated in iGive Away A Car that his life-long dream is to have his own haberdashery. His voice changed in iChristmas. In iWant My Website Back, Nevel tricks Mandy Valdez into making her think it's Freddie so she could give him iCarly.com instead of the iCarly crew. He loves to get rid of iCarly for good. He is known widely for his trademark catch-phrase "You'll rue the day!" (this was even referenced in the episode "iRue the Day")

Amanda "Mandy" Valdez

Amanda "Mandy" Valdez

OccupationStudent
viral webstar
FamilyMother
Father
(left the family)

Amanda "Mandy" Valdez (born March 2, 1996 in El Paso, Texas) (Aria Wallace) is iCarly's biggest fan. She is described as hyperactive and annoying when around Carly, Sam, and Freddie. Mandy thinks she can do "good" impressions of a duck. She first appeared in iAm Your Biggest Fan, where she is annoying at the most and does her impression of a duck in Carly's face. At the end of the episode, Mandy had a liking for the band, Backflesh, that Spencer performed in for only two weeks. Mandy comes back in iWant My Website Back, where Nevel Papperman tricked Mandy into thinking he was Freddie so Nevel could steal iCarly.com from Carly, Sam, and Freddie. Her actual first name is Amanda.

Teachers At Ridgeway Middle School

Principal Theodore "Ted" Franklin

Principal Ted Franklin
First appearanceiPilot
Portrayed byTim Russ
In-universe information
OccupationPrincipal
FamilySon
Daughter
Wife

Principal Ted Franklin (Tim Russ) is the school principal, who is fond of Carly and Freddie. He is used to seeing Sam in his office to give her detention on a regular basis (despite this, the two seem to be on good terms). Ted and his kids are iCarly fans themselves. Like his students, Ted seems to dislike Ms. Briggs and Mr. Howard's rude behavior to his students, and it appears that the feeling is mutual. He understands students like Carly and Freddie, but doesn't really sympathize with Sam, since she always disrespects him by calling him by his first name (i.e. "Mornin' Ted")

Ms. Francine Briggs

Ms. Francine Briggs
First appearanceiPilot
Portrayed byMindy Sterling
In-universe information
OccupationTeacher, Bagpipes player
OriginScotland

Ms. Briggs (Mindy Sterling) is a mean teacher that Carly and her friends like to make fun of and one of Spencer's former teachers during his years in Ridgeway Middle School. She is from Roselle Park, New Jersey United States She is obsessed with Randy Jackson and has a closet dedicated to him, filled with many pictures, a talking cardboard standee, and assorted Randy Jackson-related merchandise like colognes and the cereal Randy-Yos. Ms. Briggs is a Scottish-American, and enjoys playing the bagpipes and Highland dancing, calling it enriching entertainment, much to the dismay of students who consider it torture. She hates Sam and likes Carly. In iSpy A Mean Teacher, she is shown to think iCarly is tasteless and nearly costs the show its audience by playing the bagpipes on the show (they ended up getting the audience back by putting up all sorts of random, weird images on the green screen behind her, of which she had no clue). She is mentioned in Season 2, but not seen due to the actress concertrating on her work voicing Ms. Endive in Chowder.

Mr. Howard

In-universe information
OccupationPE Teacher
Detention Moderator
FamilyMrs. Howard (wife)

Mr. Howard (David St. James) is a PE teacher and detention moderator with an extremely unpleasant personality. A vindictive, hateful, perpetually-angry grouch that hates everything–laughter, children (no matter how nice they are), and even his wife. Everyone at Ridgeway, including Carly and her friends as well as Principal Franklin, hate him in return. He got in trouble with Principal Franklin when he called him a weak, spineless fool. But he was seen again in iReunite With Missy, and his attitude had changed a smidge. It was either change his ways or be fired. Though he is still injured from the football incident, he is the 'destroyer' of iCarly's 50th webshow spectacular, and he also believes in physical punishment (push-ups, in particular), which is against the school rules. During detention, he always leaves the room to watch the Geometry Channel, a parody of the National Geographic Channel, usually leaving the "troublemakers" unsupervised. He said he wanted a neat single final line for the school at sea drawing.

Ms. Lauren Ackerman

Ms. Lauren Ackerman
First appearanceiHave a Lovesick Teacher
Last appearanceiHave a Lovesick Teacher
Portrayed byJessica Makinson
In-universe information
OccupationHistory Teacher
FamilySpencer (ex-boyfriend)
Mother
Father

Ms. Ackerman (Jessica Makinson) is the mentally unstable history teacher and center of the episode iHave a Lovesick Teacher. She was a temporally replacement for Mr. Delvin and became extremely abusive of her class and was a sexist when her boyfriend dumped her. After Carly defended Freddie from such abuse, Ms. Ackerman called Spencer, and fell in love with him. When Spencer and Lauren began dating, she began treating the class very nicely, going so far as to cancel class in order to go ice skating, giving A's to the whole class, and serving them caramel apples. After Spencer saw Lauren's possessiveness and paranoia, he breaks up with her and Lauren abuses the class once more, even developing a hatred of the Shays and she fails Carly on an exam she didn't even take. Lauren was finally arrested by the FBI for illegally downloading 500 songs for the PearPod (parody of the iPod) that she gave to Spencer as one of her daily gifts to him. She was fired for her abusiveness and illegal theft, and she was never seen again.

Mr. Henning

He is from Fort Washington, Maryland Maryland Spencer once had him as a science teacher, but he complained that Mr. Henning smelled like rotting wood. He is a former smoker and has been smoking since the age of 18 but then quit smoking at age 21. He stresses the importance of being environmentally friendly, but does so in the wrong ways, and as a result, he tends to give the majority of his students poor grades because they were doing what is supposed to be correct, but is not correct by his standards. He gave Sam an A+ after simply doing a presentation about eating and drinking from an orange and then disposing of the carcass outside, effectively littering on the sidewalk below, to the rest of the students' horror, especially Freddie. He also gave Carly a D-minus because she made an extremely illegal project, so she, along with Freddie and pretty much everyone else in the class except Sam, had to go onto the Root & Berry Retreat for extra credit. He made an appearance in iGo Nuclear.

Students At Ridgeway Middle School

Gibson "Gibby" Cornelius Carlson

Gibson "Gibby" Cornelius Carlson
First appearanceiDream of Dance
Portrayed byNoah Munck
In-universe information
OccupationStudent
FamilyMrs. Carlson (mother)

Gibby Cornelius Carlson (Noah Munck) is the other stereotypical bullied kid from Middletown, New York United States (although he does have some friends, who are all similarly classified as "weirdos" by the rest of the students), who is fond of doing things without a shirt on (he takes it off, or is seen without it in almost every episode he is featured in; sometimes he has two shirts on, and takes them both off at the same time. It is also the reason Sam thinks he's a mermaid.). He likes spelling bees and Ryan Seacrest. He first appeared in iDream of Dance where he runs into Sam's dream in his boxers saying, "Am I late for the test?" to which Sam replies, "Get out of here Gibby, this is my nightmare!". He also goes shirtless in iMight Switch Schools, when he plays mini golf in the Shay apartment. In iWin a Date, it is revealed that he is attracted on a girl named Shannon Mitchell, who has a crush on Freddie. Gibby took off his shirt once again in the Cheesecake Warehouse (parody of the Cheesecake Factory), to dance on the table to impress Shannon. The only episode so far in which he does not appear shirtless is iGot Detention. Behind Freddie, Gibby is Sam's second-favorite target for insulting. She once forced Gibby's foot into his mouth, compelling him to do the feat that can be done by Benji, who backed out of a guest spot on iCarly.

Jeremy ("Germy")

Jeremy (Germy)
First appearanceiPilot
Portrayed byNathan Pearson
In-universe information
OccupationStudent, viral webstar, Tech producer

Jeremy (Nathan Pearson) is a sickly kid who is also known as "Germy" because he has been constantly sneezing and coughing since first grade. Like Freddie, he is also fascinated with electronics. When Freddie left iCarly during the episode iWill Date Freddie, Jeremy became the new tech producer but continuously sneezed (on the lens) during production. When Jeremy himself left, Freddie resumed his post as the team's permanent tech producer. He was also used to expose Nevel's fear of germs in order to get him to admit he liked iCarly.

When Mr. Howard goes down to investigate, Wesley chucks a water balloon at him. He also appears in iNevel and iPilot.

"Rip Off" Rodney

Rodney Goober
First appearanceiDon't Want to Fight
Portrayed byChristopher David

He once sold fake hall passes, but got caught due to the fact that he spelled 'hall' with only one 'l'. He appeared on iCarly's 50th webshow spectacular in detention selling two burritos for six dollars, that did not contain 'quality meat'. He also traded Cuttlefish concert tickets to Sam for her iCarly t-shirt, which Carly made for Sam on their 5th friendship anniversary. It is mentioned that he gets busted a lot.

Rona Berger

Rona Kim Berger
First appearanceiChristmas
Portrayed byTabitha Morella
In-universe information
OccupationStudent

Rona Berger is a snobby and rude girl who Carly thinks is "icky". Her birthday in October 11. She is originally from Ontario, Canada Canada. She is Canadian and she is rather obnoxious and thinks of Carly as "crazy". When Carly wished that Spencer was born normal, Rona is Freddie's girlfriend in the alternate reality, and she treats terribly. Rona is so obnoxious that when Freddie gave her a PearPod (parody of iPod which seems to be expensive), she just said "A PearPod! It's about time!". She also seemed upset at Freddie after he gave her a digital picture frame and if she does not get what she wants she gets super snobby. Freddie started dating Rona when he gave up on Carly because she was dating Nevel. When the timeline changes back, it can be assumed she goes back to being the girl no one likes.

FamilyMom and Dad

Shannon Mitchell (Annamarie Kenoyer) is a girl that Gibby really likes, Her birthday is on November 15. Athough she is much more interested in Freddie, acting very flirtatious with him, even to the point of staring at him in class while smiling suggestively and making flirty poses, as well as sending him tons of love letters and even touching him a few times, which made him nervous, although he still liked her personality and appearance. She and her friends get to appear on a special segment on iCarly called I Win a Date, but only Shannon herself appears, because the other two girls went to see an ice-skating show. After saying that she is attracted to Freddie, she gets insulted by Sam. In the I Win a Date game, Gibby was the mystery date, and he had to pick out of Carly, Shannon, and Sam, all anonymously, to join him for dinner for two at a restaurant. He ends up picking Carly by mistake (or perhaps strategically as a sneaky trick to change plans), and she ends up setting Shannon up with Freddie, and they go on a triple-date with Sam and Reuben.
