Shiplake College is a small independent school in Shiplake, by the River Thames south of Henley-on-Thames, England. The school, with just over 320 pupils, admits day boys from 11-18 and boarding boys from 13-18. Day and boarding girls are admitted in the Sixth Form.[1]

The College offers small class sizes, multi-sensory teaching, sporting facilities and pastoral care. Pupils are encouraged to pursue a broad education taking part in plays, concerts, the Young Enterprise and The Duke of Edinburgh's Awards as well as many other extra-curricular activities. Courses are organised to develop leadership and management skills.

History

Shiplake College was opened on 1 May 1959 by Alexander Everett. He and his wife acquired Shiplake Court which had been rebuilt in 1890 as a private residence in the Tudor style. The house had been unused for several years before the Everetts acquired it, having been used by the BBC during and just after the second world war.

In 1963, John Eggar, a Derbyshire cricketer who had been a housemaster at Repton School, became headmaster. By the time he retired in 1979, numbers had increased to 300.[2]

Ethos

Shiplake concentrates on delivering excellent teaching through small classes and individual attention with a supportive but stimulating environment. Pupils have the time to understand and explore their subjects thoroughly and the opportunity to ask questions and discuss interesting issues. Although the College does not select according to academic ability this does not mean that it is not selective. Rather, we assess each pupil on his or her potential to make the most of the opportunities that Shiplake can offer and we look at the value we can add to their education. We are proud of our excellent value-added results.

Exam results

The Daily Telegraph 2006 table of exam results for 301 independent schools placed Shiplake College last.[3]

Sport

Rowing is particularly strong with two boys representing England and Great Britain in 2006.

Cricket, football, hockey, rugby, tennis and squash are also popular sports.[1]
