Shrivastava (meaning The Guru) is a common surname in northern India, primarily used amongst the Kayastha caste.[1] Spelling variations include Shreevastava, Shrivastav, Shrivastava, Srivastav, Srivastava and Srivastwa.
Origin
Shrivastavas are a sub-clan of the Indo-Aryan Kayastha clan,[citation needed] originating from the banks of the Shrivastu[2] river now in Pakistan, popularly known as the Swat River[3] or the Swat valley.[4]
In modern times, Shrivastavas are mainly found in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi.
