Friendly question

Hi GD - just wondering why this block was necessary after only 2 edits? Is there a long term abuse pattern with this website that I'm missing? Also - popups is showing the account is both blocked and locked, something I've never seen before... do you know what that is? Thanks  7  07:24, 2 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I blocked Janicejohnson11 because I ran across two other accounts that were spamming the same thing or similar things: Janicejohnson1 and Liposuctionbeverlyhills. The random first name, lower case last name, with a number and no spaces is a pattern that I've noticed lately with the spammers. Like Scotkaiser95, Stellamercer 9, and Joannawinston919. They do the whole SEO link thing on their talk page right after account creation and make zero other edits.
As for the LOCKED thing, that would be a global lock in lieu of being globally blocked. See here, too. And the log entry on meta. The domain that were spamming got globally blacklisted, too. So the spammer got noticed by somebody else, too. They also made a mistake and edited while logged out, 202.53.74.2 (talk · contribs · WHOIS). -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 07:55, 2 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Got it - thanks.  7  09:35, 2 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. The locked thing confused me when I first saw it, too. I was like "Locked? I didn't lock them out of anything." I had to read the source code to figure out what it meant and even then I was confused. -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 17:11, 2 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I'm new to the author side of Wikipedia and I attempted to add an external link to the Wiki page for the game Darkspore. I'm the author of a video game review blog that was created with the sole purpose of providing 'gamers' with information I've collected through playing a particular game. In short, I like to think of my reviews first and foremost as a resource for others to use in order to learn more about a game before they decide whether or not to buy it for themselves. I believe my edit was promptly deleted on the grounds that it was made purely in the spirit of self-promotion, which is certainly not the case as my identity remains on anonymous on my blog as well as on Wikipedia. Please let me know if there's anything else I can do to clear up the matter or if my personal resource just isn't acceptable. Thank you very much. What can I do next?

Hi GD,

I noticed you have deleted a Page I created for TodaysDraw.com. I have reviewed the Wikipedia policies and I do realize that I was in violation. I was not trying to promote the website but trying to create a buisness page since a lot of our subscribers want simple facts about us.

I have two requests:

1. Can you guied me about how I can go about creating a business page. Just to clarify, I have put a request for an article creation by editors.

2. When people search for todaysdraw, the deleted, Wikipedia page is coming up. That is bad for us. Can I redirect the page or request for a userfication?

Please advise. Am really interested in creating a positive experience here at Wikipedia and do not want to violate any policies, while providing information baout TodaysDraw.com

Thanks.

Please Restore and Userfy TodaysDraw.com

Hi GD,

Thanks for your response. Have noted ur feedbaack.

Please do restore and userfy the article. I understand that there will be no redirects. As long as we don't feature on a Google search/Deleted Wikipedia Page, we are good. Meanwhile, I will review the Business Page policies and only then consider creating a Business Page.

Thank you.

Lirfers

I noticed that User:Lirfers vandalized several UConn-related articles and then you blocked him for multiple accounts. We had an issue a couple months ago with vandalism on those same articles (Ray Reid) in particular. People were just adding nonsense to it. Someone said he was hit by a soccer ball at an Occupy Storrs protest, among other things. One of the members of Goal Patrol (fan group) is also a leader in Occupy Storrs and was really upset. So basically, being an experienced Wikipedia editor and a Goal Patrol member myself, I calmed him down and said I would watch the page more closely in the future and undo any changes as soon as I could. But it appears Lirfers vandalized it. I was in class at the time, but I see you managed to undo it pretty quickly. You blocked him, which is good, but I'm wondering if he has any other socks out there, especially since he's editing articles that had previously been targeted. Perhaps it's something to look into... MSU Interview

Dear Gogo Dodo,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, were it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 19:35, 9 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Survivor Names

Hello. I noticed you reverted my edits to adding names to Survivor contestants (I apologize for using a random IP address beforehand). The reason you gave was "Rv, names as listed in show". However, I would like to point out that many other contestants didn't use their real names on the show, such as GC, Sugar and Bob in Gabon and I see no reason why Susie's was deleted exclusively. The same applies for all 23 articles I have edited to make better. Regards! ZephyrWind (talk) 03:55, 14 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Truco in Venezuela, speedy deletion

Why is this article set for speedy deletion? It is a local variant of an international game with it's own national history and game structure. Saying this article is unnecessary is like saying that the article on australian football is not necessary because we already have the one on association football. I intended to write a very complete article in the next few days. I will not continue working on this until I know my work will not be "speedy deleted" without the consensus of other authors who are knowledgeable in the topic. I was editing the content of the article while you were deleting it. All my content was gone because you deleted the article before I could make the first edit (less than 5 mins since its creation). Also, if you need the article to be complete in the first edit, then you don't understand how a wiki works. Articles will be stubs when they begin and grow into good articles. You are unnecessarily disrupting the work of editors and discouraging us with bureaucratic bs. Let us edit and stop excessively enforcing rules that hinder the progress of this encyclopedia. The link I shared wasn't intended to promote anything. I found an interesting post on Facebook about Search Engine Optimization, thus, I thought it must be shared on wikipedia as well. However, I do not know that you only allow those people to leave the links who pay you.

I thought wikipedia is people's encyclopedia, though, it's not now.

http://insidetv.ew.com/2012/01/18/survivor-one-world-new-cast-revealed/ mentions "Among the other NEW wrinkles is the introduction of something Probst calls “Do It Yourself Challenges,” a few of which will be sprinkled throughout the season." 99.226.198.78 (talk) 06:26, 23 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You need to read the sentence following the one you quoted. D-I-Y challenges have been done before in Survivor: Samoa. Really?

I am well aware that wikipedia is not facebook, and while I appreciate all of the effort that you and all of the other admins put in to make Wikipedia the incredible resource that is it today, I really don't see how leaving that page up for 5 whole minutes would have been the end of the world. I would have taken it down myself later tonight, as the world has no need for a wikipedia article on little old me.

Hi Thank you for the "Welcome" and I do have a quick question ... I'm very new to this sorry!

I'm interested in electronic music and I like and follow the artist "Pepper MaShay". In one of Pepper's recent Twitter's she sent out to all her fans, she mentioned that her next single "A Little Closer" will be coming out soon on a U.S. Label called "Psychedelic Records". I was curious about this record company and searched on Wikipedia, but I didn't see it listed in the "P" section under record labels. So I did some more research on Google, Discogs, and iTunes, and found out this record label has a website and it has been around since at least 2001. I also found out they released another of Pepper MaShay's songs called "Beauty Shop" which was the theme song for the Queen Latifah movie "Beauty Shop" release by MGM Studios (seems like they have some pretty "major" stuff going on anyways) ... so if this record lable has been in existence for over a decade and is doing all this big time stuff I figured there should be a Wiki article or at least a Wiki link in the "P" section under record labels by this point?

Again, I'm very new to this "editing" so I apologize for my lack of experience in these matters, I'm not quite sure what are the proper requirements for including a record label article on Wikipedia. Can you tell me how do I properly submit this record label for a possible Wiki article?

I don't think I should write the article because I'm so new to this. So I'm wondering, is there a way I can send a "request" to someone on Wikipedia who could start an article about this particular record label?

Thanks so much! Lisa — Preceding unsigned comment added by Londongoagirl (talkcontribs) 04:05, 29 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

OK, so this is my first reply. I hope it turns out correct. I found some more information about Psychedelic Records on the Sony "Acid Planet" website at this link: http://www.acidplanet.com/peppermashay On Psychedelic Records Pepper released “Beauty Shop,” which was used in the MGM Queen Latifah movie of the same name.--Londongoagirl (talk) 10:35, 13 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
In case this is helpful to know, the Sony ACID Planet website is mentioned in the Sony ACID Pro page on Wikipedia at this link, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acid_Loops#ACID_Loops --Londongoagirl (talk) 10:41, 13 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Replied on your talk page. -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 21:07, 13 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I contacted the label via email about the Sony Acid Planet article. Chris Davis at Psychedelic Records responded to my email and said that "Brian Harris" (President of Psychedelic Records) was specifically interviewed by "Steve Foldari" (an employee at Sony) who runs the Sony Acid Planet website and wrote that specific article. Chris Davis said that the label was in direct contact with Sony in order for that remix contest to have ever taken place. So to confirm this information, I then emailed Sony Acid Planet which verified there is an employee by the name of "Steve Foldari", who I then emailed directly. Steve Foldari then replied to my email saying specifically "Yes, record labels are in direct contact with Sony when Sony hosts remix contests on the Acid Planet website. The labels are actually the judges of the remix contest, so therefore a remix contest could not have taken place without permission from (and direct contact with) Psychedelic Records." Therefore, my research indicates that the Sony Acid Planet artcle was not written "in passing". I further verified a statement made in the Sony Acid Planet article about Psychedelic Records having released a Pepper MaShay CD entitled "Beauty Shop (The Remixes)". I verified there is actually a release of Pepper MaShay "Beautyshop (The Remixes)" on both Amazon and CD Baby. The Amazon link I found is: http://www.amazon.com/Beauty-Shop-The-Remixes/dp/B000QZXDVM/ref=ntt_mus_dp_dpt_2 --Londongoagirl (talk) 01:05, 15 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The CD Baby link I found is: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/electroillusion2 --Londongoagirl (talk) 01:05, 15 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There is no possibility that this Pepper MaShay "Beauty Shop" CD does not exist, because we can see it for sale on 2 websites. As I mentioned in my first message I am a fan of Pepper MaShay which is how I came across this label name (Psychedelic Records) in the first place. I have been to one of Pepper MaShay's live performances so I know she exists. There is also a Wiki article that verifies that Pepper MaShay herself does infact exist as a recording artist: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pepper_MaShay --Londongoagirl (talk) 01:05, 15 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Further research indicates, on that Pepper MaShay Wikipedia page it lists the CD "Beauty Shop".--Londongoagirl (talk) 01:05, 15 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I have purchased Pepper's CD "Beauty Shop (The Remixes)", so I am holding it in my hand right now, so that is a definite fact of reality that this CD exists. I do see a "Psychedelic Records" logo on the back of this CD. So the fact that I am holding it in my hands, and the fact that we can see this CD for sale on 2 websites is verification that the CD does in fact exist. If the CD exists, then the record label "Psychedelic Records" does in fact exist. (There is no other way around that logic). I'm really not sure how much more "proof" I can provide that the label does in fact exist other than that which I have just written, which is why I am asking for help in writing this article.--Londongoagirl (talk) 01:05, 15 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Here's another article about "Psychedelic Records" from 2005 http://www.24-7pressrelease.com/press-release/pepper-mashay-signs-with-psychedelic-records-3681.php --Londongoagirl (talk) 01:40, 15 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

PowerDNS

Hi Dodo,

I am wondering if it would not be more accurate to also split the PowerDNS line in the comparision chart into one PowerDNS and one PowerDNS Recursor line - the same way as for Example Nominum CNS and Nominum Vantio are split.

At the same time this differences between the authoritative PowerDNS and the PowerDNS Recursor should be marked up accurately, for example that the latter does not support DNSSEC wheras PowerDNS does.
