GD Leen (ガデュリン, Gadyurin), also known as Gdleen, is a Japanese science fiction media franchise consisting of an original video anime film released in 1990,[1] and a role-playing video game released for the Super Famicom (SNES) in 1991, both exclusively for the Japanese market.

Anime

The anime film, called Gdleen, was directed by Takao Kato and Toyoo Ashida, who is known for directing anime works such as Fist of the North Star and Vampire Hunter D. Gdleen is based on a screenplay written by Michiru Shimada; some of the notable anime works she had written for include Urusei Yatsura, Rurouni Kenshin, and One Piece.[1]

The plot of Gdleen revolves around a business salaryman, Ryu, who works for an intergalactic megacorporation that collects resources from other planets. Due to a spacecraft malfunction, Ryu and his robot companion "MOS-01" crash land on the planet Gdleen. There he meets a cute Euredonian fairy called Fana. The two are soon entangled in a long standing war between the monsterous Babaress and the spell casting Miyorl tribes.[1]

Video game

The video game adaptation, called GD Leen, was designed by Yuhei Yamaguchi, while the video game music was composed by Psychosonic, You Ohyama, and Toshimichi Isoe.[2] It is a single-player video game, and was released on an 8-megabit ROM cartridge,[3] with 64-kilobyte SRAM.[3] It was was one of the first role-playing games for the Super Famicom (SNES), released six months after the video game console's launch in Japan.

In this science fiction video game, the player controls Ryu (who is the captain of a space ship).[2] One day, something malfunctioned in the ship and Ryu had to crash land onto a strange planet.[2] A fairy named Fana tells the player that the planet is in grave danger and recruits him to travel into strange dungeon with the hope of finding a solution.[2]

A presumably enhanced port for the cancelled SNES-CD was in development.
