The Smurfs 2 is an upcoming 2013 American 3D family comedy film and a sequel to the 2011 film The Smurfs. Based on The Smurfs comic book series created by the Belgian comics artist Peyo. It will be the second installment of the The Smurfs trilogy, produced by Sony Pictures Animation and distributed by Columbia Pictures. The film is being directed again by Raja Gosnell, with all the main cast returning. New cast includes Christina Ricci and J. B. Smoove as members of the Naughties, and Brendan Gleeson as Patrick Winslow's stepfather. The film is set for release on July 31, 2013.[1] The third film is scheduled to be released on July 24, 2015. This will be Jonathan Winters' final film after his death on April 11, 2013.

Plot

Gargamel creates Hackus and Vexy, a couple of evil Smurf-like creatures called the Naughties, to harness the magical Smurf essence. When he discovers that only a real Smurf can give him what he wants and that only Smurfette can turn the Naughties into real Smurfs, Gargamel kidnaps Smurfette and takes her to Paris, France where the Naughties teach her to become one of them. There, with the help of the Smurf essence, Gargamel hopes to use the Eiffel Tower as an energy-generating antenna to finally return home.[2] It is up to Papa Smurf, Brainy, Gutsy, Clumsy, Grouchy, and Vanity to return to the human world and seek help from Patrick and Grace Winslow and their son, Blue.[1]

Production

On August 9, 2011, Sony Pictures Animation announced a sequel to be released on August 2, 2013, which was later rescheduled to July 31, 2013 (two years and two days after the release of its predecessor).[5] Director Raja Gosnell[1] and producer Jordan Kerner will return.[6] Katy Perry confirmed at the 2012 Kids' Choice Awards that she will reprise her role as Smurfette. Sony began working on the sequel in early 2011 with writers J. David Stem, David N. Weiss, Jay Scherick and David Ronn. By early August 2011, the first draft of the script was completed.[7] Filming will take place in Montreal, Canada.[8] On April 26, 2012, Sony announced that the film has gone into production.[1] On April 17, 2013, it was announced that Britney Spears had recorded a song titled "Ooh La La" for the soundtrack of the film.[9]

Video game

A video game based on the film, titled The Smurfs 2, will be published by Ubisoft in July 23 2013. Developed by Ubisoft and WayForward Technologies, it will be released as an action-adventure platformer to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii and Wii U, and as an interactive storytelling book and collection of mini-games to Nintendo DS.[10]

Sequel

On May 10, 2012, just 2 weeks after announcement of production of The Smurfs 2, it was reported that Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation are already developing a script for The Smurfs 3 with writers Karey Kirkpatrick and Chris Poche.[11]

The Smurfs 3 is set for release on July 24, 2015.[12]
