Artpop (stylized as ARTPOP) is the upcoming third studio album by American recording artist Lady Gaga, to be released first in Germany on November 8, 2013, through Interscope Records.[4] The first single, "Applause",[5] had its radio premiere and iTunes release on August 12, 2013, before officially impacting mainstream radio stations in the United States on August 19, 2013.[6] The official music video for "Applause" was also released on August 19, having its world premiere on Good Morning America.

Background and recording

Development of Artpop began shortly after the release of Born This Way (2011),[7] and by the following year, the album's concepts were "beginning to flourish" as Gaga collaborated with producers Fernando Garibay and DJ White Shadow.[8][9] Initial material was sent to Gaga to test for the first recording sessions of Artpop, which coincided with the Born This Way Ball.[10] Up to fifty songs were constructed and considered for inclusion.[11] By May 2012, manager Vincent Herbert hinted that production for the album had concluded, being composed of "insane, great records".[12] The same month, Gaga introduced tracks to her record company and hoped to reveal the album's name by September,[13] a revelation that instead was announced one month in advance.[14]

Following hip surgery in February 2013, Gaga had six months to recuperate, during which she studied literature and music with her creative team as well as discussed "creative gifts that [they] had to offer each other".[15] She elaborated on her artistic process in her Women's Wear Daily interview: "I got to put a giant white or black sheet of paint over my whole canvas and I got to review Artpop again. I was given the time to really be creative because it’s a gazing process, it really is. I have to gaze into the work for long periods of time for it to be good," adding that upon analyzing her ideas, she received "that wonderful feeling" which told her "that's the one".[15] In early July 2013, Interscope Records sent a mass email to major music-related publications updating them on their current releases, eventually revealing an August 19 release date for "Applause" and a music video;[16] however, it was released a week earlier on August 12 due to leaking snippets.[17]

Composition

Gaga described Artpop as "a celebration and a poetic musical journey" that displayed a "lack of maturity and responsibility", contrary to the dark, austere demeanor of Born This Way,[18][19] and ultimately subscribing to a "reverse Warholian" formula.[20] In addition, the album boasts of an experimental soundscape possessing elements of complextro, J-pop, and trap inspired by Chicago's active gay nightlife. Producer Zedd said, "There was one song that started from her just giving me, like, ten words to describe an emotion, and then I had to make this into music."[21] The electronic landscape of Artpop was initially tailored for Born This Way, before Gaga and Garibay decided to scrape the material in favor of a rock-influenced sound.[22] Gaga admitted that she was more confident writing material for Artpop as opposed to her previous studio albums, describing it as her first "real" effort that emulated a "phoenix rising from the ashes".[23]

The concepts and themes of the album began developing in December 2011.[9] While performing a concert in Australia, Gaga previewed a song titled "Princess Die", a song with suicidal themes that was written as an ode to Princess Diana and her death. Gaga later said that her acoustic rendition of "Princess Die" would most likely be cut in lieu of a more upbeat dance version.[7]

Release

Jeff Koons made the Artpop cover

Initially slated for an early 2013 release,[4] the release of Artpop was postponed indefinitely after Gaga developed synovitis and a labral tear to her hip that needed surgical correction;[24][25] which also led her to cancel the remainder of her Born This Way Ball concert tour. According to Vonda Wright, spokeswoman for the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, Gaga "will be on crutches for several weeks and then have three to four months of intense physical therapy."[26]

In July 2013, it was announced that Artpop would be released on November 11, 2013, in physical and digital forms as well as through an application developed by the Haus of Gaga technology division, TechHaus.[4][27][28] It will be available for all iPad, iPod, iPhone, Android, and computer users and will include videos for each song on the album, bonus music, games, chats, fashion updates and much more.[4][27][28][29][30] It will be the third album-app to be released in mainstream commercial markets, the first being Björk's Biophilia (2011) and Jay-Z's Magna Carta... Holy Grail (2013).[31] The album and app pre-order was initially supposed to begin on September 1, 2013, however, Gaga later announced on her Facebook page that "due to public anticipation", pre-orders for the album and the app will now be available on August 19, 2013.[5] This was pushed up to August 12 due to the release of "Applause".

On October 7, 2013, Gaga unveiled the album cover on Clear Channel billboards around the world. The image features a nude sculpture of Gaga made by Jeff Koons[32] in front of a Jeff Koons, blue gazing ball, and pieces of other art works in the background such as "Venus" painted by Sandro Botticelli, which inspired Gaga's image through the new era, including in her music video for "Applause" and the VMA performance of the song. NME's Will Gompertz wrote that "this is a classic cover. When you’re listing the 100 best covers of the 21st century, this will be right up there. Typographically it’s an AA+, visually it’s AAA".[33] Later Gaga also revealed on her Facebook page that "the first 500,000 physical copies of ARTPOP are crafted with LADY GAGA + ARTPOP cut out of hot pink metallic foil + silver foil. The foiling represents the true design of the cover as imagined by the artist Jeff Koons, who hand collaged the typography himself." [34] The tracklist was unveiled in a series of fan posts retweeted by Gaga with pictures of a painted mural made by the fans who waited her outside of the studio in Los Angeles on October 9, 2013. Originally, the setlist was supposed to be unveiled on September 29, 2013. In a Twitter post, she said the tracklist was late due to two songs fighting for the twelfth place on the album.[35]

Promotion

Lady Gaga performing the title track, "Artpop" on the 2013 iTunes Festival, in London.

The official album announcement, released on July 12, mentioned that Gaga will be hosting an "artRave" party the night before the album's release that will officially launch the album as well as showcase projects she has been working on in collaboration with the Haus of Gaga, Dutch photographer duo Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, avant-garde theater director Robert Wilson, performance artist Marina Abramović and artist Jeff Koons.[4][27][28] The image accompanying the announcement features Gaga covering her bare breasts wither her arms, showing the "Artpop" tattoo on her left forearm, and wearing a visor by the London College of Fashion alumna Isabell Yalda Hellysaz.[36] Another promo shows Gaga with long brown hair, sitting completely naked on a chair made of motherboards, wearing a pair of spectacles and showing her unicorn thigh tattoo.[37]

The singer performed "Applause" at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards on August 25, where she did a retrospective of her career so far, by putting different costumes and wigs on, each one representative of a different era (The Fame, The Fame Monster, Born This Way and Artpop). Gaga also headlined the iTunes Festival on September 1, 2013, where she played eight songs featured in the album, including "Applause", as well as "Artpop", "Aura", "Dope", "Jewels N' Drugs", which features rappers T.I., Too Short and Twista; "Manicure", "Sexxx Dreams" and "Swine". However, T.I. was not present for the performance due to being denied entry to the UK.[38][39]

On October 4, a trailer for the movie Machete Kills, which marks Gaga's acting debut, included a sneak peek of the studio version of the song "Aura". A lyric video, directed by Robert Rodriguez was released on October 9, featuring scenes and some dialogue from the movie.[40] Snippet from the song "Do What U Want" is set to appear in a commercial of Beats by Dr. Dre.

Documentary

On December 25, 2012, Gaga used Twitter to announce a documentary of her "life, the creation of Artpop + you",[41][42][43] which the artist described as a gift to her fans. The documentary is still in production, with film direction by Terry Richardson,[41][42][43] a previous collaborator on the photography book Lady Gaga x Terry Richardson.[44]

Singles

"Applause" was released as the first single from the album. It was supposed to premiere on August 19, 2013, however, due to multiple clips of the song leaking online, "Applause" was released early on August 12, 2013.[45] It officially impacted mainstream radio stations in the U.S. on August 19, 2013.[46] The music video for "Applause" was premiered on Good Morning America on August 19, 2013. The music video was shot in Los Angeles by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, who also created the artwork for the single.[45]

On September 20, 2013, Gaga gave an update about the second single stating that it will be released before the album's release.[47] She added that: "There is a lot of choices, I want to choose something thats totally ME! for me its about choosing the best song...".[48][49] The next single was finally revealed as "Venus", to be released on October 25, 2013.[50][51]
