Life and career
Early life; career beginnings: 2002–2008
Sasha Pieterse was born in Johannesburg, South Africa on February 17, 1996. Immigrating to the United States when she was three years old, she was raised in Las Vegas before moving to Los Angeles. Pieterse grew up around show business. Her parents were both professional dance partners who performed all over the world, and Pieterse loved being on stage with them. She soon met with an agent who quickly signed her to an acting and modeling contract. She started in the business at the age of 4 1/2 working on commercials and print work.[3]
At 6 years old, Sasha Pieterse got her start in television, co-starring in 2002 as Buffy on the Warner Bros. comedy series Family Affair. In 2004, she appeared in Stargate SG-1. She started to rise to fame as an actress when she played in House portraying a young girl named Andie with terminal cancer. Her performance in House M.D was later considered for a daytime Emmy in 2005.[3]
In 2005, she appeared in her first film The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl cast as Marissa the "Ice Princess" who is the daughter of Mr. Electricidad, and at first the only student who befriends Max. On Planet Drool, she appears as the Ice Princess, keeper of the Crystal Heart, which is a necklace she wears which can freeze anything, including time. Because Max and his friends desire an increased opportunity wherein to defeat Mr. Electric, they request the Crystal Heart of her, to discover that only she and her alter-ego Marissa can use it. Marissa is often kept under very severe scrutiny by her father; possibly as a result, Max has imagined the Ice Princess as capable of speaking boldly to her father, correcting him when he suppresses her. Because Max seems to have an emotional "soft spot" for Marissa.[3]
Pieterse has done numerous television commercials including long-running national spots for “Nesquick” and “Firestone Tires”. She was featured on a billboard for “Supercuts” that appeared throughout the country then she sang and modeled in the Macy’s Passport Fashion Show, performing throughout California.[3] During 2006 she filmed for a feature starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, The Air I Breathe and she landed a lead in a Hallmark Hall of Fame Movie as Maggie in Claire, both were released in 2007.[3]
In 2006, Pieterse stars as Good Luck Chuck as a young goth girl named Anisha whom while playing a game seven minutes in heaven at a party in 1985, 12-year-old Charles "Chuck" Logan (Connor Price) refuses to have sex with Anisha. In retaliation, Anisha places a curse on Chuck, so that every single woman he sleeps with will break up with him and marry the next man who asks her out.[3] Also in a short-lived series called Wanted with her former Family Affair co-star, Gary Cole as Millie Rose for two episodes.[3]
Pretty Little Liars and music career: 2009–present
In 2009, Pieterse made an appearance in Without a Trace as Daphne Stevens in the episode "Wanted" and Pieterse landed a recurring role as Amanda Strazzulla who is the daughter of Lydia who abandoned her because she was too young to raise her.[3] She lives in New England with Lydia's sister Carol Strazzulla, and months ago manifested spontaneous combustion, the ability to explode things with the power of her mind, which caused her aunt to fear her, and also lured Noah Bennet and Meredith Gordon while they worked together for the Company during the Villains' arc (Boom) in Heroes for five episodes.[3]
In 2009, Pieterse was cast on Pretty Little Liars as Alison DiLaurentis, the former "queen bee" of her clique and the most popular and beautiful girl in her school before her disappearance and death.[3] Although she cared for her friends, she enjoyed using their deepest secrets against them to keep them in line. Charming and manipulative, Alison was skilled at finding ways to blackmail everyone, and was hated by many people. She disappeared a year prior to the beginning of the series, after which her body is found. The show's main premise revolves around the mystery of Alison's murder.[3] Alison usually appears sporadically through flashbacks and hallucinations. Towards the end of the third season, it is revealed that she may not be dead after all and is "Red Coat" - the lead tormentor towards the Liars. Being only 18, she is the youngest actress on the show, all her co-stars being in their early to late 20s. She also became the character of Vivian Darkbloom who was Alison's secret identity that she used to hide from A and spy on A. Alison wore a long red trench coat and a black wig to become Vivian.[3]
In 2011, she appeared as Amy Loubalu who is Josh (Matt Prokop) love interest in the Disney Channel Original Movie Geek Charming also as a teenage girl in the movie X-Men: First Class. Pieterse has posted on her Instagram the official artwork of her debut Country single, titled "This Country Is Bad Ass." It is set to be released April 12, 2013.[4] She will release two more singles in 2013, one titled "RPM", and another titled " I Can't Fix You". "This Country Is Bad Ass" was released on April 11, a day early of its official release date.[3] "RPM" and "I Can't Fix You" were released in the summer.
On October 4, 2012, ABC Family renewed Pretty Little Liars for a fourth season.[5] Filming began on March 14, 2013.[6] It will premiere on June 11, 2013. Pretty Little Liars' producer I.
