foodpanda, and its affiliated brand hellofood, is a global online food delivery marketplace, headquartered in Berlin, Germany, and operating in 41 countries on four continents. The platform provides a service that allows users to select their local restaurants and place their orders online on the web or via the app. foodpanda/hellofood allows customers to order various cuisines from over 25,000 restaurants worldwide. foodpanda/hellofood is the fastest expanding Rocket Internet venture in terms of country expansion[1].

How It Works

foodpanda/hellofood processes and sends orders directly to partner restaurants, who then deliver directly to customers. Orders are either paid online or via cash on delivery. The service is available online and on mobile applications.[2][3]. Customers place their orders by entering a postcode on the site and browsing for food from a large list of restaurants. They can create meals by browsing the menus of restaurants and selecting items they want to order. Once a customer is ready to place their order, they click on the “order now” button, enter a delivery address and then proceed to the checkout. Restaurants receive these orders and then deliver directly to customers. foodpanda/hellofood sends out an SMS confirmation for orders and their estimated delivery time.

History

foodpanda was launched in May 2012[4] in Singapore and expanded quickly into 16 countries by the end of the year. This was followed by an expansion into seven more countries, to make a total of 23, by February 2013.[5] The company stated that it aimed to move into 40 nations in Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa by the end of Q1 2014 and did achieve this within the timeframe. An article in the New York Times stated that ‘’Ralf Wenzel and his company are evidence that the method works,’’ regarding the success of their rapid expansion plans [6].

Website features

foodpanda has partnered with more than 25,000 restaurants worldwide[7]to increase delivery sales through online and mobile orders by providing them with technology and analytics.[8] It connects customers with restaurants that offer food delivery in their area and lets them choose, order and pay online. foodpanda also features a review section on restaurant pages, where customers can comment on sales process, delivery, taste and overall impression of restaurants .[9] With foodpanda/hellofood’s partnership with restaurant review site OpenRice, restaurant reviews were also integrated into the ordering process, allowing customers to read reviews as they decide what to choose. Customer orders are also saved, allowing for reorders to be done quickly, while multiple addresses can also be stored so they don’t need to be entered for every order.[10]

Mobile

In Q1 2013, foodpanda launched a mobile app, [11] which is currently one of the leading food delivery apps worldwide. The app allows users to filter restaurants by location and order food using their smartphones. It also features optional push notifications for current special deals and offers based on location. The app is available on iOS, Android (operating system), Nokia Asha platform and Nokia X Software Platform . The company has seen strong mobile uptake in Asian markets [12] , particularly in Thailand and Indonesia, as the middle class boom skips much of the desktop adoption seen in other parts of the world [13].

Partnerships

In Malaysia, where it is branded foodpanda along with other Asian countries, the company entered into a partnership with convenience store chain 7Eleven in early February 2014. [14] The partnership allows customers to order snacks, beverages, confectionary and prepaid reload cards from seven 7Eleven stores in several cities across the country. [15]foodpanda and KFC expanded through Vietnam during February 2014. Only one week after launching in Ho Chi Minh City, service was also extended up north to Hanoi. [16]The partnership provides foodpanda customers with the full range of KFC’s chicken offerings. foodpanda also entered into partnership with southeast Asian food review website OpenRice in February 2014.[17] The alliance allows foodpanda customers using the foodpanda.in portal to read reviews of restaurants they want to order from. Finnish mobile phone producer Nokia announced a partnership with foodpanda to pre-install a food delivery app on the Nokia Asha, Lumia and X family of devices. [18] Nokia made the announcement at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in late February 2014.[19]

Investments

The startup is supported by Rocket Internet[20] , the largest e-commerce incubator in the world.[21]foodpanda/hellofood raised $20 million in funding from Investment AB Kinnevik, Phenomen Ventures and Rocket Internet in April 2013. [22]In September 2013, iMENA Holdings invested $8 Million.[23] In February 2014, there was another funding round of $20 million from a group of investors, including Phenomen Ventures.[24]The company stated that it will use the money to continue expanding into new markets, further improve their customer service and continue to develop the mobile proposition.[25].
