Winx Club is an Italian animated television series[1] directed, created, and produced [2] by Iginio Straffi [1] and his company Rainbow S.r.l..[3][4] It is part of the larger Winx Club franchise. The series is the first Italian cartoon to be sold in the U.S.[3][5] According to Iginio Straffi's website, "Winx Club is an action and fantasy show combined with comedic elements. In the mystical dimension of Magix, three special schools educate modern fairies, ambitious witches, and supernatural warriors, and wizards from all over the magical universe."[2]
Plot
The show features Bloom and her five best friends, Stella, Musa, Tecna, Flora, Layla (also as known as Aisha) who call themselves the "Winx" and go on many adventures together mainly in the magical universe and on Earth. Throughout the story, they discover new fairy transformations and magical powers, battle against evil and support Bloom as she tries to discover her origins.
There are two different Winx Club plots, listed as follows:
- The original story-line, which was produced by Rainbow S.R.L., was mainly focused on Bloom's story.
- The series went through a reboot after Rainbow S.R.L. partnered with Nickelodeon, where the first and second season were made into four special 1 hour episodes (3 for season 1 & 1 for season 2) and the third and fourth seasons were dubbed again, following the original story-line, albeit with minor differences.
- The commonly called 4Kids version which, as part of 4Kids Entertainment's policy of adapting foreign animated shows to an American audience, was heavily edited and often diverged from the original story-line, including name changes (such as the original name of Bloom's planet of origin, Domino, which was replaced by Sparks in the 4Kids version), as changes in the role of characters (such as Daphne, who is Bloom's older sister whose role was changed to that of being only a nymph protecting both the Dragon Fire and Bloom's crown by 4Kids) and changes in the character and personality of characters (Tecna was given a British accent and Musa was given a hip hop-like personality by 4Kids).
Animated Series
Season One
Bloom, a supposedly ordinary girl from planet Earth, discovers her magical abilities when she saves Stella, a fairy princess who persuades Bloom to join Alfea, a college for fairies in the Magical Dimension where she, Stella, and the three friends she meets, Musa, Tecna, and Flora, form the Winx Club. Later in the series, they encounter and befriend the Specialists: Brandon, Riven, Timmy and Sky, who also become the group's love interests. They also make enemies, including a trio of witches calling themselves the Trix: Icy, Darcy, and Stormy. Together, the Winx go through many adventures and discover many secrets while fighting their enemies and studying at Alfea.
Season Two
The Trix are back and have allied with Lord Darkar, an ancient creature of evil who wants to rule the universe. Together with their new member, Aisha, and their new friends the Pixies, the Winx will have to fight this new threat and acquire a new power called Charmix. They also meet Helia, a Specialist who becomes the love interest of Flora.
Season Three
The Winx have to face a new enemy, Valtor, who was freed from his prison by the Trix and who shares a dark past with Bloom and her birth parents. The Winx will also have to earn a new transformation called Enchantix to become full-fledged fairies and Aisha meets a young wizard, Nabu, with whom she falls in love.
Season Four
Taking place after the events of "Secret of the Lost Kingdom", the Winx find about a new threat, the four Wizards of the Black Circle, who caused all magic to disappear from Earth. The Winx go to Earth to fight the Wizards and restore its magic, and to save the last fairy from Earth, Roxy. They will also earn a new power: Believix.
Season Five
A new danger emerges in the form of Tritannus, Aisha's merman cousin who turned into a monster after absorbing toxic pollution and allied with the Trix. Since their Believix power does not work well under the sea and is not strong enough to fight Tritannus and the Trix, the Winx will have to go on a quest to find the power of Sirenix. However Sirenix is cursed and it has something to do with the past of Daphne, Bloom's elder sister. Aisha also meets Roy, a specialist towards whom she is attracted.
Season Six
The Trix are back and they take over Cloud Tower and ally with a young witch named Selina, who owns a magic book called the Legendarium which can makes the legends become reality. However the Winx, minus Bloom, lose all their powers during a battle against the Trix and Selina and they will have to obtain two new transformations, Bloomix and Mythix.
Season Seven
It has been officially confirmed that a seventh season of Winx Club will be produced, and will air in 2015. An official teaser summary of the season states that: "Each fairy will have an animal that has a special talent, necessary for the balance of the Magic Universe. The Winx will discover this, while facing two new dreadful villains and getting new amazing transformations along their journey." However it is still unknown whether an English dubbed will be produced and further details of the plot are still not known. [6][7]
