Dr. Mohammad Shafiq Hamdam (Pashto: ډاکتر محمد شفیق همدم, born 1981) is for promoting peace, justice and human rights. He is a writer,[1] commentator, activist in Social Media[2] and political analyst. He is the founder and Chairman of the Afghan Anti-Corruption Network[3] (AACN). He has also worked with the United Nation's projects, the United States Government and NATO.[4] Since 1997 He has worked in the private sector, free media, civil society institutions, the United Nations projects, United State Government and NATO in different fields and positions including good governance,[5] security, social and economic, political and international relations, public diplomacy, promoting democracy and human rights. He brefly served a journalist with the Moby Media. For his contribution to transparency, justice, peace and security of Afghanistan he is nominated for Nobel Peace Prize[6] by Combined Joint Interagency Task Force-Shafafiyat (NATO Transparency Task Forces).

Hamdam was born in Alishing village, in Laghman Province of Afghanistan, In JanUARY 1981. He belongs to the Malikzai family of the Ghurids or Ghoridsdynasty, and Afghan empire from 1148 to 1215. In 1986 he enrolled in primary school during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan at Lam-e-Shahid High School in Kabul and he graduated in 1999 during the Taliban regime from Shahid Muhammad Arif High School from Jalalabad and in the same year he enrolled in THE Political Science Faculty of Nangarhar University, but shortly after he was expelled from the university by the Taliban leadership, because of his article on destruction of Buddhas of Bamiyan. In 2002 he earned his Bachelor of Health Sciences from Nangarhar Institute of Health Sciences, in 2003 he was rewarded Advance Diploma in Administration and Economics from The Swiss College of Administration and Economy and in 2010 he graduated from George C Marshall Center,[7] European Center for Security Studies in Germany, where he studied advance security and international relations.

Hamdam lived his entire life in Afghanistan and as child he has seen the Soviet invasion, civil war and as teenage and young man he has seen Taliban regime and the US invasion of Afghanistan. He is well versed in several languages, including his native tongue which is Dari, as well as Pashtu, English, Urdu, Hindi and Arabic.

Presently, Hamdam serves as the Chairman[8] of Afghan Anti-Corruption Network (AACN), the largest and leading network of civil society organizations fighting against corruption and since January 2001 he also works as a Senior Media and Public Diplomacy Advisor to the NATO Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan, where he has also worked as a Political and Media Advisor[9] since July 2008. He is a Member of Board of Directors,

Modern Organization for Development of Education (MODE), Executive Board Chairman of Anti-Corruption Watch Organization.[10] He is also founder of Youth For Peace, Afghan Youth Against Corruption, Anti-Corruption Watch Organization, Kabul Tribune, an online newspaper and co-founder of the Afghan Women Coalition Against Corruption. Hamdam is member of Afghan Young Leaders Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES), Program Associate of Hiroshima Peace Builders Center, member of the United Nation Coalition Against Corruption (UNCAC), member of Voice Against Corruption and member of the Afghan Civil Society for Advocacy. In 2009 presidential and provincial elections of Afghanistan he briefly worked for Moby Media, Tolo TV as a presenter of political round-table. From May 2007 to July 2008 he worked with the US Department of Defence as Media Coordinator and Spokesman[11] for the US Forces in Eastern Afghanistan. From November 2004 to November 2008 he worked as Culture Advisor and Linguist for the US forces in Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom) and from January 2004 to November 2004 he served as a Main Awareness Trainer, Admin and Logistic Officer and Medical Assistant at the Demobilization Disarmament and Reintegration (DDR) project of the United Nations in Kabul. Between 2003 and 2004 he also worked as a Senior Radiographer and Radiologist Technologist at a private clinic in Jalalabad city of Afghanistan. Between 2001 and 2003 he was freelancer interpreter and prior to that from February 1997 to November 2001 he worked as a Health Educator with the Health Net International TPO and World Health Organization in Jalalabad city in eastern Afghanistan.

Fighting corruption

Hamdam said that corruption is the biggest problem, which feeds insecurity in Afghanistan as well as the insurgency,[12] poppy cultivation, drug processing and drug trafficking. He formed the biggest ever group of volunteer social activists from across Afghanistan

to fight corruption, the most dangerous and toughest job in one of the most corrupt and unstable country in the world. Through peaceful demonstration and protests such a 5 km countrywide race against corruption, he mobilized thousands of citizens to pressure government for reform, through 5 km race against corruption. He has also mobilized youth, students and women to take part in the fight against corruption. He is an outspoken activist, who has disclosed cases of senior corrupt official and he has advocated for the trail and persecution[13] of cabinet members and senior politicians.

Hamdam is closely following Afghanistan and regional countries developments. Following Afghanistan’s affairs as an observer, Hamdam has attended International Conference on Afghanistan, The Hague 2009 in Netherlands, NATO 60 Summit in Strasburg and Kehl, France in 2009, Kabul International conference in 2010, NATO Summit in Lisbon Portugal in 2010, 2nd International Bonn Conference about Afghanistan, the NATO Chicago Summit in 2011 and tens of other national and international conferences on Afghanistan. As an observer he observed Afghanistan presidential elections in 2004 and 2009, Afghan parliamentary and provincial elections in 2005 and Traditional Loya Jirga on the Afghanistan and the US Strategic Partnership Agreement.

Writing on Afghanistan

Hamdam wrote several articles[1] on the subject of corruption, Afghanistan’s affairs. His articles published in English, Russian,[14] German, Dari and Pashtu. Talking about the corruption related issues and Afghanistan’s affairs he has been appearing in numbers of national and International media outlets, such as Tolo TV, Ariana TV, RFE/RL, BBC, CBS, AFP, ARD, VOA, TRT TV, Aljazeera TV, The Washington Post and other key national and international media outlets.
