Filmistaan is a 2013 Indian film written & directed by Nitin Kakkar[1]

The film was screened at the 17th Busan International Film Festival, the Mumbai Film Festival, and the International Film Festival of Kerala,where it won the The Silver Crow Pheasant Award[2] for Best Debut[3] Film in International Film Festival of Kerala. The film bagged the Best Feature Film in Hindi in the 60th National Film Awards 2012.[4] The film was also screened at 24th Palm Springs International Film Festival, California. 23rd TROMSO International Film Festival, Norway. 36th Goteborg International Film Festival, Sweden. And 5th Jaipur International Film Festival. The film was released nationwide across India on June 6, 2014.[5]

Plot

In Mumbai, affable Bollywood buff and wanna-be-actor Sunny, who works as an assistant director, fantasizes on becoming a heart-throb star. However, at every audition he is summarily thrown out. Undeterred, he goes with an American crew to remote areas in Rajasthan to work on a documentary. One day terrorist group kidnaps him for the American crew-member. Sunny finds himself on enemy border amidst guns and pathani-clad guards, who decide to keep him hostage until they locate their original target. The house in which he is confined belongs to a Pakistani, whose trade stems from pirated Hindi films, which he brings back every time he crosses the border. Soon, the two factions realize that they share a human and cultural bond. The film shows how cinema can be the universal panacea for co-existence.

Production

The Pakistani village depicted is the Beermana village[6] in Rajasthan, India. The film was declared tax free in Maharashtra due to the idea of binding India and Pakistan.[5]

Critic Subhash K. Jha gave the film 4/5 stars and states that "The only happy outcome of the cross-border divide is a heartwarming film such as this. As we often say about the Wagah border, this you gotta see."[10]

Rajeev Masand of CNN-IBN gave the film 3/5 stars mentioning that "'Filmistaan' works best as a movie about the magic of movies. It's a celebration of India's song-and-dance film culture and heightened emotions"

Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama gave the film a 4/5 and stated "Although the film does highlight cross-border terrorism, it also sheds light on the love that people from both sides have for Bollywood. On the whole, FILMISTAAN walks the tightrope between offbeat and commercial with gusto."

Aniruddha Basu of Dear Cinema had a positive response to the film, stating "Though ostensibly an ode to popular Bollywood melodramas such as Maine Pyar Kiya and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, the film is closer in spirit to world cinema classics like Cinema Paradiso, Life is Beautiful and No Man's Land in its examination of the futility of all conflict and assertion of a common humanity that binds us all."[11]

Anupama Chopra of Hindustan Times gave the film 4/5 stars saying "Debutant director Nitin Kakkar, who has also written the film, has created a comedy that is permeated by a profound sadness."

Paloma Sharma of Rediff gave a perfect 5/5 stars and said "Employing crisp humour, often using famous dialogues from Hindi films, the film stresses on the shared culture (including the sanskaars given by Cine Maa) to remind us how easy it is to get along with our neighbours when we look at them as human beings."

One of the few dissenting voices was Shubtra Gupta of Indian Express who gave 2/5 stars and said "Filmistaan’ has great premise, of creating an Indo-Pak cross-border hot-spot and getting Bollywood to douse the flames. This should have made the film soar, because there is nothing quite like mad passion for movies to lighten even the grimmest of brows. But the execution falters. ‘Filmistaan’ is mildly entertaining in brief spurts but sluggish overall."
