The fourth season of the ABC fantasy-drama Once Upon a Time was announced on May 8, 2014.[2][3][4] On May 13, 2014, it was revealed that the season would be split into two parts, the first half airing during fall 2014, and the second half during spring 2015 of the 2014–15 television season.[5] It premiered on September 28, 2014.[1]

On April 20, 2014, it was confirmed that former Once Upon a Time in Wonderland star Michael Socha would be a series regular as his character Will Scarlet/Knave of Hearts.[6] The final minutes of the third season finale debuted Elsa.[7] Kristoff and Anna from the 2013 Disney animated film Frozen have also since been introduced in Season 4[8] along with a new main antagonist, the Snow Queen, portrayed by Elizabeth Mitchell.[9][10][11] The second half of the season will see the return of Kristin Bauer van Straten as Maleficent, in a recurring capacity for a "major arc".[12]

Development

The fourth season of Once Upon a Time was confirmed on May 8, 2014,[2][3][4] this announcement was followed up by the reveal that the first half of the season will air during the fall of 2014, while the second half will air during the spring of 2015.[5] The second half of the season will reportedly have Maleficent as the main villain.[12] It has been confirmed that the episode, "Smash the Mirror", will air at the earlier time of 7/6c and will be two hours long,[27][28] Adam Horowitz later clarified via twitter that the extra hour was in addition to the already announced 22 episodes.[27][29] He also confirmed that the winter finale would air on December 14, 2014.[27][29]

Casting

After Once Upon a Time in Wonderland was canceled, it was reported that Michael Socha, who played the Knave of Hearts, was in talks to join the main cast of Once Upon a Time as a series regular should the series receive renewal for a fourth season.[30] On April 20, 2014, it was confirmed that should Once Upon a Time be renewed, Socha would join the cast as a regular cast member.[6] On May 8, 2014, the series received its official renewal from ABC, resulting in Socha's hiring.[2] Michael Raymond-James is not returning as a main cast member, since his character Neal Cassidy was killed off after he sacrificed himself to bring back his father.[31] On July 17, 2014, images from the set of Once Upon a Time revealed that Ginnifer Goodwin was returning as Snow White/Mary Margaret Blanchard along with fellow cast members Jennifer Morrison as Emma Swan, Josh Dallas as Prince Charming/David Nolan, Colin O'Donoghue as Captain Killian "Hook" Jones and Jared S. Gilmore as Henry Mills.[32] Comic Con 2014 also revealed the return of Lana Parrilla as the Evil Queen/Regina Mills[33] and Emilie de Ravin as Belle.[33] Emilie also confirmed this[34] as well as Robert Carlyle returning as Rumpelstiltskin/Mr. Gold[34] in an Instagram picture.

On May 12, 2014, it was confirmed that Sean Maguire would return for the role of Robin Hood for the fourth season, as well as Robin's wife, Marian, portrayed by Christie Laing.[35] On July 1, 2014, it was announced that Scott Michael Foster had been cast as Frozen character Kristoff and Elizabeth Lail as Anna.[8] The following day, it was announced Georgina Haig had been cast as Elsa.[7][10] On July 8, 2014, Elizabeth Mitchell was revealed to have been cast in an as of yet, unrevealed role,[9] although showrunners Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz revealed that her character will either be an evil Snow Queen more like the one from the original Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, or Elsa's and Anna's mother, who somehow survived the sinking ship depicted in the film.[10] Kitsis and Horowitz have also confirmed that Olaf will not make any appearance, but they have cast a real reindeer as Sven.[10] On July 28, 2014, the role of Prince Hans was revealed to have been given to actor Tyler Jacob Moore while the role of Pabbie was given to John Rhys-Davies.[36]

On July 9, 2014, Zap2it reported that Giancarlo Esposito was returning as the Magic Mirror/Sidney Glass in at least the premiere episode of season 4, after being absent due to commitments to the NBC series Revolution, where he starred alongside newly revealed cast member Elizabeth Mitchell.[37] On August 26, Kristin Bauer van Straten was revealed to be returning as Maleficent for the second half of the season.[12]

Beverley Elliott, Lee Arenberg and Raphael Sbarge all confirmed through their respective twitters that they would be returning for Season 4 as Widow Lucas/Granny,[38] Dreamy/Grumpy/Leroy[39] and Jiminy Cricket/Dr. Archie Hopper[40] respectively. Faustino Di Bauda has also been confirmed to return as Sleepy/Walter[41][better source needed] On September 4, it was revealed that Frances O’Connor was cast as Belle's mother, Colette for the sixth episode although appearances later on in the season were also hinted.[14] A new character, Lily, has been cast to Nicole Muñoz,[13] while Sally Pressman has also been given a role as a yet to be annonced character.[15]
