Real-life room escape games are a type of physical adventure game in which people are locked in a room with other participants and have to use elements of the room to solve a series of puzzles, find clues, and escape the room within a set time limit. Some games include sub-plots.[1] The games are based on "escape the room" video games, such as "Crimson Room" and "QP-Shot",[2][3] in which the player is locked inside a room and must explore his or her surroundings in order to escape. Players must be observant and use their critical thinking skills to escape the room. Other inspirations include adventure board games and movies.

Weekend or day event escape games have been held in Montreal, Toronto, Seattle, Washington and San Francisco, California;[4][5][6][7] as well as Hungary, Switzerland, Russia, the UK, Spain, Poland, Greece, Australia and a number of Asian countries.

Real-life room escape games are becoming popular in the United States, Japan, Taiwan and mainland China. Each game integrates local concepts and themes to settings. For example, some games require you to escape prison cells, space stations[8] or werewolf villages.[9]

Permanent real life escape games in a fixed location were first opened in Europe (Switzerland and Hungary) and followed later in North America, Asia and Australia. Examples include the two pioneer companies HintHunt and AdventureRooms.[10][11]

There are now many fixed location real life escape games in the world
