Piku ([[Deepika Padukone]]) is a Delhi based architect who manages her small business, runs her home and takes care of her 70-year old father Bhashkor Banerji ([[Amitabh Bachchan]]) who spends most of his time obsessing about age related issues. Piku’s father must ensure that he has her attention 24x7 leaving her with little time to do anything else. Romance and getting a life of her own, just don’t seem possible! While both are deeply attached with one another, they are equally strong headed, stubborn and just won’t let go when dealing with each other’s idiosyncrasies and quirks!

When Bhashkor emotionally blackmails Piku to take a road trip from Delhi to Kolkata, the owner of the local cab service Rana ([[Irrfan Khan]]) has no choice but to drive them personally since none of his drivers are willing to endure Piku or her eccentric father. During this undesired road trip they learn to deal with each other’s moods and idiosyncrasies and it reveals more than Bhashkor’s bathroom habits.

What follows is a heady mix of motion, emotion & commotion which culminates as Piku and Bhaskhor return to their roots in Kolkata, giving us an insight into the father daughter relationship where Bhaskor’s irritating yet endearing demeanour and Piku’s equally headstrong nature may always be at loggerheads but this seemingly dysfunctional relationship is bonded by an understated and an unconditional love that leaves you wanting more.

The film explores the dynamics of their relationship as they take a road trip to Kolkata.[1] Irrfan Khan, Moushumi Chatterjee and Jishu Sengupta portray supporting roles. Plot

Piku (Deepika Padukone) is a Delhi based architect who manages her small business, runs her home and takes care of her 70-year old father Bhashkor Banerji (Amitabh Bachchan) who spends most of his time obsessing about age related issues.

When Bhashkor emotionally blackmails Piku to take a road trip from Delhi to Kolkata, the owner of the local cab service Rana (Irrfan Khan) has no choice but to drive them personally since none of his drivers are willing to endure Piku or her eccentric father.

Casting

The main cast of Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, and Irrfan Khan was finalized in mid-2014.[5] In preparation for the role of Piku, Padukone learned Bengali as her character is from Bengal.[6] Initially, there were early reports that Jisshu Sengupta was cast as the romantic lead opposite Deepika Padukone, but it has been confirmed that Sengupta will in fact be seen playing Padukone's best friend in the film.[3][7] Irrfan Khan will play the romantic lead opposite of Deepika Padukone.[8][9] Amitabh Bachchan will essay the role of a Bangali bhadrolok, while Moushumi Chatterjee will essay the role of a family member.[10] Akshay Oberoi will play a cameo role going on a date with Padukone's character.[4]

Filming

Principal photography for Piku began in August 2014, when shooting of the film's first schedule took off in Kolkata.[11] The first schedule for Piku was also filmed in Delhi and Mumbai and included filming of indoor scenes.[12][13][14] The second schedule of filming started on October 30, 2014 in Kolkata and took place mostly in the north part of the city.[14][15][16] Specifically, shooting for the film took place at the iconic Howrah Bridge in the city's Shyambazar neighbourhood and at Bishop Lefroy Road, the residence of Satyajit Ray.[16][17][18] During the shooting at Howrah Bridge, Bachchan was seen cycling around the city streets dressed as his character.[19] The Kolkata schedule was completed on November 18, 2014 and shooting has now shifted to Delhi and Ahmedabad.[20][21] Shooting in Delhi took place at Gurgaon cyber hub and city club where Padukone and Khan were seen filming for the film.[22] The film was wrapped up after its last schedule being shot in Varanasi. Both Padukone and Khan shot on the ghats of Banaras under chilly conditions and also attracted a crowd on the ghats of Banaras.[23]

Promotion

The makers of the film released a video of day one on the sets of Piku which is called Piku Begins. The video has the cast speak about what viewers can expect from the film.[24] As a part of promotions, the makers have released onset pictures of the film's shooting where the main cast are all seen in character.[25] Bachchan's first look was revealed from the film that depicts his character of an old Bengali man with long hair and a big belly.[26] On 25 March 2015, as part of the promotion, Deepika revealed the poster of the film through her twitter handle.[27]
