The suspect's (there was only one) body lies at the entrance to Dawson College, where the shooting began.

The Dawson College shooting occured on 13 September, 2006, from 12:41 to 13:15 EDT,[1] at Dawson College, a Cégep in downtown Montreal. It has an attendance of about 10,000 students between the ages of 16 and 19.[2] The shooting began outside of the front entrance to the school, and moved through the atrium to the cafeteria on the second floor.[3] A Montreal Police Service spokesman said that a single suspect had been killed on the scene, but would not elaborate on the circumstances.[4] Police are currently taking steps to identify a possible second suspect.[5]

Summary

Montreal General Hospital officials said that 11 people had been admitted with gunshot wounds, six of them in critical condition and three undergoing emergency surgery.[6] Nine more have been admitted to other area hospitals,[7] and one woman died of her wounds at Montreal General.[4] It is the fifth school shooting in Canada and the third in Montreal, after the École Polytechnique massacre in 1989 and the Valery Fabrikant shooting at Concordia University in 1992.

Shooter

A police spokesman confirmed the involvment of one gunman, and that gunman was shot and killed by police. However, the police did not reject the possibility of other suspects being involved. Many eyewitnesses described the man as tall, blond, wearing a black trenchcoat[8], black pants with metal studs, and army boots. The suspect was carrying three weapons.[9]

In the evening, a Sûreté du Québec spokesperson confirmed to LCN TV reporters that the shooter was a 25 year old male, born in Quebec.

Immediate aftermath

Police surrounded the campus, cordoning off the campus area with orange police tape, in the belief that there might have been a shooter at large.[citation needed] They swept the school for students left inside.[10] Local radio reports place the number of police vehicles at approximately 80, and up to 24 ambulances surrounded the building. Students were evacuated from the campus, or left the vicinity of the shooting.

Alexis-Nihon Plaza and Westmount Square, both shopping centres which (like Dawson College) are directly linked to the Atwater metro station, have been evacuated and the green line of the Montreal Metro has been shut between Lionel-Groulx and McGill.[11] The Pepsi Forum shopping centre opposite corner to Dawson remained open.

A large portion of the evacuated Dawson students were relocated to nearby Concordia University's Sir George Williams campus. The students have been grouped together at either the rear terrace or within the D.B. Clarke theater of the Henry F. Hall building. Students were encouraged to contact loved ones to assuage fears. The police established several phone numbers for parents of the students.[5]
