Development

In October 2015, it was confirmed that an Annabelle sequel was in development.[3] David F. Sandberg replaced Annabelle's John R. Leonetti as the sequel's director in March 2016.[4] The first film's screenwriter, Gary Dauberman, returned to write the script, with Peter Safran and James Wan returning to produce. Principal photography began on June 27, 2016, in Los Angeles, California, in the Warner Bros. Studios lot.[5][6] and concluded on August 15, 2016.[7] Benjamin Wallfisch composed the film's score.[8] In March 2017, Sandberg revealed the film is a prequel and the title is Annabelle: Creation.[9]

Casting

In June 2016, Talitha Bateman, Miranda Otto, and Stephanie Sigman were cast to star in the film.[10][11] It was later revealed Anthony LaPaglia, Lulu Wilson, Philippa Coulthard, Grace Fulton, Samara Lee, Lou Lou Safran, and Tayler Buck had been cast, with Buck making her film debut.[12] It was also announced Lotta Losten, Sandberg's wife and frequent collaborator, would appear in the film.[13]

Release

The film was initially set to release on May 19, 2017.[14] It was then pushed back to August 11, 2017, to avoid competition with Alien: Covenant.[15] The film premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival on June 19, 2017.

Critical response

The film has received positive reviews, with most critics noting it as a strong and vast improvement over its predecessor. On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 100% based on 13 reviews, with an average rating of 8.2/10.[16] Metacritic, another review aggregator, assigned the film a weighted average score of 71 out of 100, based on 4 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[17]
