Early Life
Roy chowdhury was born in a refugee family on 1st August in 1968 at Bihutipalli in frontier town Bongaon in the district of North 24 Pargonas in West Bengal in India. His parents ,Shyamdulal Roy Chowdhury(died in) and Bithika Roy Chowdhury, originally belonged toBangladesh, were left destitute during the partition of Bengal, and became full-time laborers .Roy Chowdhury went to Bongaon High School, and Gobardanga Hindu college. He could not continue his higher education because of extreme proverty .since childhood he was keenly interested in music ,drama, and poetry. He learned poetry- basic under Usaprasanna Mukhopadyay ,a teacher of Bengali literature in Gobardanga Hindu College and under the poet, Subhankar Patra . Later he got the eminent poet , Binoy Majumdar as his mentor .
Career
During 80's Roy chowdhury’s poems regularly appeared in several literary Bengali magazines such as Dainik Basumati,Krittibas,Kabisammelan, and influential Desh (magazine)[2]His widely-read novel Ashru Dana first appeared in Desh Magazine. His first poetry collection ,Nasta Prajanmer Vasan(Song of Degrading Generation)was published in 1996 book fair ,and his novel Ashrudana in 2002 (wings of Tear )which earned rave review .His poems has been anthologized in many books such as Hirak Khanda ,edited by Poet, Nirendranath Chakraborty.[3]
Writing Style
Roychowdhury writes from life—either from epiphany or from peak-experience in palpable and pithy language, both in metrical and non-metrical verse .In his poem ,he often explores highs and lows of life , aftermath of partition of Bengal , the agony of refugee-life, love for native language and the suffering of his fellow people. Most of his poems pulsates with a universal agony. His recent book of verse, namely Jashor Roder Gaachh(Trees Either Side of Jessore Road)cries the pity of felling trees, and urges to heal the earth from pollution, and to save it from the destruction made by sheer greed and selfishness of some people. He uses 'the speech of ordinary men' but his metaphors casts a haunting effect on the readers. He writes in all types of poetic forms ,but his experiment in Payar,a Bengali prosodic line has become phenomenal.Earlier in his poetic journey he was influenced by eminent poets of 70's such as Joy Goswami,Shyamal Kanti Das ,Mridul Dasgupta, Nirmal Halder etc.[4] ,but now he owns a unique voice and place in Bengali Literature.
