Production

Neerali was financed by Santhosh T. Kuruvilla under his company Moonshot Entertainments and co-produced by John Thomas and Mibu Jose Nettikadan. It was written by Saju Thomas and directed by Ajoy Varma in his debut in Malayalam cinema, having earlier worked as editor and director in Bollywood. The film was officially announced by lead actor Mohanlal on 3 October 2017, with yet to be titled. Filming was said to begin soon after he has finished his work in Odiyan.[1] When asked, Varma said to The Times of India that the film is a "drama-thriller" set in Mumbai, Pune, and Sri Lankan locales, and the principal photography would took place between December 2017 and January 2018. Since more clarity was to be made for few more details, Mohanlal's character and the rest of the cast was not revealed.[2] The film's title was revealed on 27 January 2018 along with a title poster.[3]

Mohanlal was approached for the role right after the scripting was finished.[2] In November 2017, a casting call was released seeking male actors of age group 50 – 60 and 30 – 35 and female actors between 25 – 30.[4] Varma offered a role for Parvatii Nair after he spotted her on the sets of Nimir.[5] She was cast only a few weeks before filming, and plays an urban character. By the start of filming, only Mohanlal, Parvatii, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Saikumar, and Dileesh Pothan were cast, the remainder of the cast was filled out as the filming progressed.[6] Suraj plays Veerappa, Sunny's chauffeur. Mohanlal and Suraj takes up the most screen space in the film.[7] Nadhiya and Nassar were cast in February 2018. Nadhiya and Parvatii plays two of the important female characters in the film.[8] Nadhiya portrays Sunny's wife Molly Kutty.[9] Megha Mathew confirmed her part in that month.[10]

Principal photography began on 9 January 2018 in Mumbai, India, with Santosh Thundiyil serving as director of photography.[11] Director John Matthew Matthan was invited on the first day of filming, who officially performed the switch on of movie camera. Filming schedules were planned as to release the film by May 2018 (later postponed). Sandeep Narayan and Arun C. Thampi were the executive producers.[12] Parvatii was present on the first day of shoot.[6] Mohanlal joined the sets by the fourth week of January.[13][14] He allotted 15 days dates for filming. Stunt scenes were choreographed by Sunil Rodriguez. Serena Tixeria was the make-up artist. Costumes were designed by Himanshi Nijhawan, while Udai Prakash Singh was in control of the art department.[8] Location filming continued in Mumbai to the following month, with some of the locations being Bhandup, Powai, and Mira Road.[15] Scenes of Nadhiya was shot in early February after her sudden casting in that month.[9] Filming in Mumbai was wrapped on 15 February 2018. It was completed in 36 days.[16]

Music

The film features songs composed by Stephen Devassy and score by Ronnie Raphael. Mohanlal sang a duet along with Shreya Ghoshal.[17] The song was written by P. T. Binu.[18]

Release

Neerali is scheduled to be released in India on 14 June 2018 on the eve of Eid al-Fitr.[19]
