Gourmet Hound is an on-going webtoon on Line Webtoon written and illustrated by Robyn Leehama, an indie creator based in Hawaii. The webtoon was originally released on Tapas on June 30, 2017[1] but was moved to Line Webtoon on December 3, 2017 as a featured webtoon.[2][3]

Plot

Gourmet Hound follows a 25-year-old woman named Lucy who has a sharp sense of taste and smell. After realizing her favourite French restaurant, Dimanche, had changed its owner and staff members, she sets out in search for the chef who gave her that "perfect taste."

During the aftermath of an accident in the Gourmet Hound cafe, she meets the two co-owners of Gourmet Hound and former chefs at Dimanche, Graham and Brie. Lucy quickly learns of the unsettling backstory to why all of the former chefs have left the French restaurant. With this knowledge, Lucy sets out not only to find that "perfect taste" she's been looking for but also to try to reunite the chefs together on good terms as they once were.

Lucy Fuji

Lucy Fuji, grand-daughter of Lynn Fuji, is a 25-year-old woman who has a heightened sense of taste and smell. She has short reddish-brown hair and big brown eyes with a short stature. She likes homemade cooking and her grandmother, but dislikes hot weather and overpowering perfume or body spray.[4] Lucy inherited her peculiar palate from her dad and grandfather and is also deceptively strong compared to her petite size. Since her high school days, she works as a part-time employee at the Smiths' "Bell Corner Bookstore," but she is also a part-time cafe worker at Gourmet Hound[4] after she became indebted to the Gourmet Hound co-owners when she broke the door to the cafe and had to pay for the repair costs.

After losing her parents when she was young, Lucy lived with her only family, her grandmother Lynn, but then lived with Joanna when her grandmother died. Her grandmother used to own a cooking school called "Cornflower Blue Culinary School" located beside Dimanche, which Lucy inherited after her grandmother's death. However, financial issues quickly arose soon after and the building was sold.[5] Lucy knew of Chef Bartlett when she was little as he would visit her and her grandmother from time to time, but after Lynn's death the two drifted apart as well.

Lucy is on the search for the perfect taste. She had found the "perfect taste" at 19 years old when she accompanied her grandmother for a dinner at Dimanche, but she doesn't remember what dish she ate or what the chef's name is,[6] so she can only find the "perfect taste" with her sense of taste and smell. After obtaining the list of former Dimanche chefs, she sets out to find these chefs to ask them for a dish she can try and eat.

Her name is associated with the apple of the same name, fuji.

Graham Ramos

Graham Ramos is a 29-year-old chef at Gourmet Hound and co-owns the place with Brie. He is also a former chef at Dimanche and was Chef Bartlett's favourite. He joined Dimanche at the age of 16, the same time as Brie, as a dishwasher. While driving home one evening, after a late shift at Dimanche, Graham got into a car accident that damaged his cribriform plate. The accident resulted in him losing his sense of smell.[5] Losing his sense of smell caused him to make too many mistakes for him to continue his cooking career and eventually leaves Dimanche. Graham became the co-owner of Gourmet Hound, when Brie came to him for help, mostly for financial reasons. He hesitantly accepted the proposal.

Lucy nicknamed Graham "gramps" for having white-bleached hair. Graham dyed his hair white so that his brother could lend him money to help finance Gourmet Hound.[7] His original hair colour was brown. Graham is a head taller than Lucy and has blue eyes. He is usually seen wearing square-rimmed glasses. He also has earrings from his teenage rebellion stage. Graham has one older sister and one older brother.

Graham likes dogs and instructive cooking shows, but he dislikes spiders and competitive cooking shows.[4]

His name is associated with graham crackers.

Lucy's friends and family

Joanna McIntosh

Joanna McIntosh, also known as Jojo, is Lucy's best friend since college. She is also Lucy's current roommate. She is a 25-year-old young-adult novelist[8] who likes spicy food and magical girl comics/cartoons, but she dislikes being on camera and driving.[8] She comes from an upper-class family to which Lucy and Walter would always bring up their surprise at how rich and wealthy her parents are. It is revealed that she is transgender.[7] Her name is associated with the mcintosh apples.

Walter Smith

Walter Smith, known simply as Walt, is also Lucy's best friend. He has known Lucy since they were 16 years old, but they didn't become friends until college. He is a 24-year-old astrophysics grad student.[8] His mother, Ophelia, owns the "Bell Corner Bookstore" that Lucy has been working at since high school. He likes sweets and mystery TV shows/books/podcasts, but he dislikes wearing contacts and making professional phone calls.[8] Walter has two mothers: Ophelia and Alice. His name is associated with green granny smith apples.

Lynn Fuji

Lynn Fuji is Lucy's grandmother and the only family Lucy had. She past away three years ago and left her cooking school, called "Cornflower Blue Culinary School," to Lucy to take care of after her death. She is also best friends with Chef Bartlett and was his cooking teacher at a different culinary school before she opened her own.

Gourmet Hound staff

Brie Malik

Brie Malik is a 30-year-old chef at Gourmet Hound and co-owns the place with Graham.[9] She likes true crime shows and watching people enjoy their food, but she dislikes indecisiveness and being made to run.[9] Brie has hazel eyes and is usually seen wearing a hijab. She joined Dimanche at the same time as Graham, from when they were 16 years old, as a dishwasher. Later, she was promoted to the role of a pâtissière and became one of Charlotte's protégés.

Chef Bartlett was the one who showed Brie the Gourmet Hound property. She dropped everything that she had to fulfil her goal of opening her own place and even declined the abroad apprenticeship opportunity that Charlotte had given her. As the apprenticeship was going to be for both Heath and Brie to go on, her choice of abandoning the offer only one week before departing, left her and Heath's relationship strained. She was close to Heath during their time at Dimanche, but because of the misunderstanding that she left him and abandoned her gourmet pastry career for a coffee shop, the two drifted apart[10] but reconnected after he opened his gourmet bakery in the same plaza as Gourmet Hound.

She wanted to open her own bakery after frequenting a small bakery called Lee's Bakery where her mother would buy her pastries from when she failed at baking her own. Brie wanted to open a similar bakery where she can greet customers by name, watch them enjoy her pastries and see them come back again and again.[7]

Brie's family is from Singapore[11] and her name is associated with brie, the cheese.

John Clementine

John Clementine, also known simply as Clementine, is a 24-year-old barista at Gourmet Hound. He is tall with long, brown hair, often put in a bun. He is from Hawaii but moved to fulfil his passion for coffee. He likes his fun surname and going to museums, but he dislikes people who are taller than him and people who make fun of the way other people drink their coffee.[9]

During his college days, Clementine worked at the Roastery that supplied coffee to Dimanche.[8] He left the Roastery and joined the Gourmet Hound team after Brie invited him to come to work at the cafe she was about to open.[8] He enjoyed the atmosphere at Dimanche so much that he accepted Brie's invitation just so he could be in the same environment like Dimanche used to be.[8]

His name is associated with the fruit, clementine.

Cosmos Bakery staff

Heath Nguyen

Heath Nguyen is the son of Charlotte and little brother of Madeleine. He opened a gourmet bakery called "Cosmos Bakery" after apprenticing in France for half a year.[12] He used to work at Dimanche with Brie as a pâtissière. He misunderstood Brie's decision to not go on the apprenticeship with him to open a coffee shop and giving up her gourmet pastry chef career. Heath tried cutting ties with her up until he returned to town to open his bakery.[10] They reconnected and cleared the misunderstandings after Lucy and Brie's argument on the PA system.

He has shoulder-length, black hair that is often pulled up in a ponytail and has a scar over his left eye. His name is associated with heath, the candy bar.

Anise

Anise is a pastry chef at Cosmos Bakery. She attended the same pastry school as Yuzuru and Meyer, and was scouted by Heath when she was a student. She has brown curly hair that is usually help up in an afro-like style. Her name is associated with the star anise spice.

Yuzuru

Yuzuru, also known as Yuzu, is a pastry chef at Cosmos Bakery. He attended the same pastry school as Anise and Meyer, and was scouted by Heath when he was a student. He often uses Meyer's nickname for Lucy: hamster. His name is associated with the Japanese fruit, yuzu, also known as citrus junos from the lemon family.

Meyer

Meyer is a pastry chef at Cosmos Bakery. He attended the same pastry school as Anise and Yuzuru, and was scouted by Heath for his pâtissière when he was a student. Meyer and Clementine do not get along. His nickname for Lucy is hamster. His name is associated with the meyer lemon.

Former Dimanche staff

Chef Bartlett

Chef Bartlett was Lynn's best friend and her best student.[6] He was the owner and executive chef of Dimanche until he left and disappeared 3 years earlier,[13] around the same time as the death of Lynn Fuji. No one knows where he is except Chef Nguyen, Chef Palmier and Chef De Santos.

Olive Raleigh

Olive Raleigh is a 35-year-old executive chef (chef de cuisine) at "The Leaping Hare."[12] She used to work at Dimanche for about eight years and is often seen in the flashbacks taking care of Graham and Brie. Olive has blue eyes and long, curly, blonde hair, often seen held up in a ponytail. She is short and stout with a gentle aura. She has a younger brother named Quincy and an older sister named Pepper.

When Olive was younger, her parents weren't around as much. Her sister couldn't cook and her brother was too young, so the job of cooking fell onto Olive. As she quickly learns different recipes and particular preferences of each of her family members, she becomes more aware of her skills and talent in cooking especially when her sister brought up culinary school and shows how much she enjoys Olive's cooking.

Olive likes mint and collecting earrings, but she dislikes lateness and being asked about marriage/relationships.[14] Her name is associated to olives.

Sherry

Sherry co-opened a gourmet catering business with Madeleine.[12] She used to date Graham, but she currently has a crush on Madeleine. She used to work at Dimanche as a pastry chef. Her name is associated with sherry, the wine.

Madeleine Nguyen

Madeleine Nguyen is Heath's older sister and daughter of Charlotte. She used to be a culinary chef at Dimanche, but left and co-opened a gourmet catering business with Sherry.[12] She likes learning about food. Madeleine is temperamental and can come off mean. She has long, black hair that is usually put up in a ponytail. She also has a scar like her brother, but on her right cheek. Her name is associated with madeleine, also known as petite madeleine, a cake from France.

Charlotte Nguyen

Charlotte Nguyen is a retired chef[12] and was the former head pastry chef at Dimanche. She is the mother of Heath and Madeleine Nguyen. She is a world-renown pastry chef but is currently away from the limelight and is resting in a tropical island with her husband. Her name is associated with charlotte, the dessert.

  • Lemon: Graham's dog. It is a very energetic dog that has white fur and particularly likes Lucy. Its walker is Joanna's younger brother, James. Lemon is usually seen with a scarf around its neck. Its name is associated with lemons, the fruit.
  • Quincy Raleigh: Olive's younger brother. He is a 28-year-old wedding planner who likes to douse himself in cologne.[15] He has short blonde hair and is always seen with a bluetooth in his ear. He likes bluetooth headsets and cold brew coffee, but he dislikes body odor and frogs.[14] His name is associated with quince, a fruit that resembles a pear.
  • Pepper Raleigh: Olive's older sister. She is a 40-year-old woman who has short blonde hair and blue eyes with a tall stature. Brie, Graham, Olive and Lucy were part of the staff team for her wedding. She is married to Marcus. She and Marcus has a dog named Peanut Butter, also known as PB, who was the ring-bearer for their wedding. Pepper is an Italian language professor and translator. She likes boots and Olive's lasagna, but dislikes answering text messages and waiting.[14] Her name is associated with bell peppers.
  • Marcus Bay: Pepper's husband. He is a 35-year-old history professor with short brown hair and is often seen in a nervous state. He likes hiking and corgis, but dislikes surprises and red onions.[14] His name is associated with bay leaves.
  • Frank Garcia: Olive's sous-chef at "The Leaping Hare." He is 28 years old and has purple hair with round glasses. He likes pastel colours and live music, but dislikes flying insects and clothes that wrinkle easily.[14] His name is associated with the sausage, frank, also known as the hot dog.
  • James McIntosh: also known simply as Jamie, is Joanna's younger brother. He is a student but also a part-time walker for Lemon, Graham's dog. He also has a crush on Lucy.
  • Ophelia Smith: Walt's mother and the owner of "The Bell Corner Bookstore."[16] Like Walt, she also likes sweets.
  • Alice Smith: Walt's mother. She works as an accountant.
  • Thomas: Joanna's parent's personal secretary. He is always stressed because of the McIntosh's. Lucy had a crush on him.
