After is an upcoming new adult romance film directed by Jenny Gage, and written by Susan McMartin, Tamara Chestna, and Gage. It is based on the 2014 Wattpad story and novel of the same name written by Anna Todd. The film stars Josephine Langford as Tessa Young, a college student who begins a turbulent relationship with bad boy Hardin Scott, played by Hero Fiennes-Tiffin. The film will be released on April 12, 2019, by Aviron Pictures.[1]

Cast

Plot

“After” follows the journey of self-discovery and sexual awakening of Tessa, a 18 years old dedicated student, dutiful daughter and loyal girlfriend to her high school sweetheart. When she enters her first year of university with grand ambitions for her future, her guarded world opens up when she meets the dark and mysterious Hardin Scott, a brooding rebel.

Production

In 2014, Paramount Pictures acquired the rights to adapt After to the theaters.[9] Susan McMartin, who until then was After's screenwriter, left the project in mid-2017 and Paramount Pictures rights were discontinued. Aviron Pictures later acquired rights to the After film and Tamara Chestna was hired to update on McMartin's script. Director Jenny Gage was also responsible for the final revisions of the script.[10]

Mark Canton and Courtney Solomon of CalMaple Films and Jennifer Gibgot of Offspring Entertainment were hired to produce the film. CalMaple, Voltage Pictures and Diamond Film Productions financed the film. Wattpad’s Aron Levitz, Anna Todd and Dennis Pelino from CalMaple are also producing. Meadow Williams and Swen Temmel from Diamond Films will serve as executive producers.[11] On November 28, 2017, Anna Todd announced that Jenny Gage would be the director of the feature.[12]

Casting

On May 8, 2018, Julia Goldani Telles and Hero Fiennes-Tiffin were cast in the main roles of Tessa Young and Hardin Scott.

But in June 2018, Julia Goldani Telles announced in an open letter to fans her out from the movie due to scheduling conflicts. In July, Australian actress Josephine Langford was cast as the new Tessa Young.[4]

Also July, Pia Mia was cast to play Tristan, a character previously male in the books.[6] Executive producer Swen Temmel was cast as Jace.[4] On July 16, Shane Paul McGhie and Khadijha Red Thunder were cast as Landon Gibson and Steph Jones respectively.[3] Additionally, Meadow Williams was cast as Professor Soto, another previously male character in the books.[7] On July 27, Peter Gallagher and Jennifer Beals were cast as Ken Scott and Karen Gibson, Hardin's father and Landon's mother.[5] On July 30, Selma Blair and Dylan Arnold were cast as Carol Young, Tessa's mother, and Noah Porter, Tessa’s high school boyfriend.[8]

Filming

Principal photography was due to begin filming in June 2018 in Boston, Massachusetts.[13] In early July, producer Jennifer Gibgot confirmed that shooting would begin on July 16, 2018 in Atlanta, Georgia shortly after they had cast Langford as Tessa.[14] Production was completed on August 24.[15]

Release

After is scheduled to be released on April 12, 2019, by Aviron Pictures.[1]
