Chasten James Buttigieg ( /ˈbtɪə/ BOOT-ih-jəj; Glezman; born June 23, 1989) is an educator and the husband of South Bend, Indiana's 32nd and current mayor Pete Buttigieg, a 2020 Democratic presidential candidate.

Early life and education

Buttigieg was born on June 23, 1989, in Traverse City, Michigan, to Terry and Sherri Glezman, owners of a landscaping business. He was raised there as the youngest of three.[2]

In college, he spent a year in Germany. He took classes at Northwestern Michigan College before attending the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire;[3] he graduated in 2011 with a Bachelor's degree. Later, Buttigieg attended DePaul University in Chicago where he received a Master of Education in 2017.[4] That summer, Buttigieg began a AMS/MACTE certificate from Xavier University.[5]

Career

After graduating from college, Buttigieg moved to Milwaukee where he worked as a Teaching Artist for First Stage as well as in classroom settings in the greater Milwaukee area.[6]

While pursuing his graduate degree, he was a substitute teacher in both Chicago and South Bend public schools. In fall 2017, Buttigieg began as a junior high humanities teacher at the Montessori Academy in Mishawaka, Indiana.[5][7] He also teaches theater and runs a diversity club.[3] He took a leave of absence to support his husband's campaign.[8] In January 2019, Buttigieg joined the Civic Education Team of the South Bend Civic Theatre as the Director of Curriculum.[9]

In 2016, Buttigieg was a State Democratic Delegate for St. Joseph County.[10]

2020 presidential election

Buttigieg is a campaign spokesman[11], advisor,[12] and social media campaigner for his husband's campaign[13] and has been a surrogate too. If his husband is elected, he has identified improving the nation's public schools, arts education, and mental health as the areas he would focus on as First Gentleman.[14] He also supports LGBTQ rights.[15]

Personal life

Buttigieg was born in a conservative Roman Catholic family.[2] He came out to his family at 18 and soon moved out, living with friends and in his car. He has since reconnected with his parents.[3]

Buttigieg lives in South Bend with his husband.[16] The two first met on the dating app Hinge in summer 2015. They met that August while Chasten was in graduate school.[17] They got engaged in December 2017 and married on June 16 next year, at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. James in South Bend; the two appeared at the South Bend Gay Pride block party following their nuptials.[2][18]

Buttigieg has performed improv comedy in and around the Chicago area.[2]
