My Little Pony: A New Generation is an upcoming 2021 computer-animated musical fantasy film directed by Robert Cullen and Jose Uche, with Cecil Kramer and Peter Lewis producing and Mark Fattibene directing. Based on the toyline of the same name by Hasbro, the film will be the start of the fifth incarnation of the franchise, while also serving as a direct follow-up to the fourth incarnation. Entertainment One will produce the film, and will be animated by Boulder Media.

Originally set to be released theatrically on September 24, 2021 by Paramount Pictures, the movie will be released on Netflix in late 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Synopsis

Set years after the events of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, the film will center on Sunny Starscout, an outcast and young activist who still sees hope in an Equestria where Twilight Sparkle's teachings on friendship and harmony have been replaced with paranoia and mistrust, and where all three species of ponies live segregated from one another. However, when she meets a lost unicorn named Izzy, the two embark on an adventure involving musical numbers, a jewel heist, conspiracy theories, and "the world’s cutest flying Pomeranian" as they travel to new lands while facing their fears and turning enemies into friends.[1]

Production

Development

In February 2019, it was reported that Hasbro was developing a computer-animated My Little Pony feature film.[2] Reports later said that the film would mark the beginning of the franchise's fifth-generation,[3] which was confirmed on September 17, 2020;[4] My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic creator Lauren Faust first hinted the Hasbro was working on the fifth incarnation in 2018, when she denied any involvement on the franchise's next incarnation,[5] while Tara Strong, voice actress for Twilight Sparkle, said that she wouldn't reprise her role in the fifth incarnation in April 2020.[6] On October 8, 2020, it was reported that the fifth incarnation, including the film, will center on a new set of characters, though with the possibility of characters from the previous incarnation appearing.[4]

On January 29, 2021, Emily Thompson, Entertainment One's VP of global brand management, revealed that the film will be set in the same world as the fourth incarnation of the franchise, while still serving as the first entry in the fifth incarnation, being set years after the events depicted in the previous incarnation.[7] Thompson explained that his decision was made because the producers felt it would "[feel] wrong" to not to further explore the lore and worldbuilding established by the fourth incarnation.[7]

On February 12, 2021, it was reported that the founder of Boulder Media, Robert Cullen, along with Jose Uche will serve as directors, with Mark Fattibene set to co-direct the film.[8] Cecil Kramer and Peter Lewis were also announced as producers for the film.[8]

Animation

The film was animated by Mathias Malzieu, Alexandre Astier and Jeremy Zag. Animation services will be provided by Boulder Media.[1] Unlike previous My Little Pony media, the film will be animated entirely through computer-animation.[1]

Release

My Little Pony: A New Generation is set to be released in late 2021 by Netflix.[8] The film was originally slated to be released theatrically on September 24, 2021, by Paramount Pictures.[9] However, Paramount sold the distribution rights to Netflix by February 2021 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.[8]

Television series

Following the cancellation of the film's theatrical release, Netflix later announced that a computer-animated television series set based on the film was currently in development.[10] The series will center on the adventures of Sunny Starscout and her friends after the events depicted in the film.[10] Like the film, Netflix will be release the series on their streaming service.[10] In March 2021, Cort Lane joined the series as an executive-producer.[11]
