The article references rocket engine "air-start" capability. This is the term used in one of the linked reference documents, but is not a typical term used in rocketry. "Air-start" is a term used in aviation, which refers to restarting an engine in the air after it has been shutdown in flight. However, a rocket engine has an initial start, which may be on the ground for a first stage or in-flight on an upper stage. Initially starting a rocket engine on an upper stage is "in the air", so "air-start" is misleading when the intent is to refer to "restart". The issue is an "air-start" on an aircraft engine generally leverages the flow of air across the propeller or fan to spin the engine, instead of a starter motor or bleed air. In the case of restarting a rocket engine, it requires the ability to use some internal mechanism to start the flow of propellants and an ignition mechanism. The "air" has no role. Restartable rocket engines are more accurately "multi-start" rocket engines. They can be started a certain number of times depending on how they accomplish starting. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Meh130 (talk • contribs) 15:03, 21 February 2022 (UTC) |
