At 9:34 am (UTC+01:00),[1] on December 31, 2022, Pope Benedict XVI died at the Mater Ecclesia Monastery in Vatican City.[2] The Vatican announced that his body would lay in the St. Peter's Basilica starting on January 2, 2023, with further funeral plans being considered.[3] The news came after Pope Francis hinted on Benedict's poor health in a previous December 28 statement, where he announced that he was "very sick" and pleaded for people to pray for him.[4] His death marks the end of a peculiar moment within Roman Catholic history: a time where two Popes coexisted together, as the result of Benedict's unprecedented 2013 resignation.[5]

The Vatican has announced that his funeral will occur on January 5, 2023 in St. Peter's Basilica.[3]

Background

Benedict XVI in 2019

At 20:00 (CET) on February 28, 2013, Pope Benedict resigned from the position of Pope, the first person to do so in almost six centuries since Pope Gregory XII[6] and the first to voluntarily resign since Pope Celestine V in 1296.[7][8][9] He spent the rest of his life living in Rome, as he had since 1981.

Reports of Benedict's declining health go back as far as 2017. In October and November of that year, an image featuring him, Peter Seewald, and Stefan Oster, Bishop of Passau, circulated on Facebook. The image showed Benedict with a black eye. The former pope had suffered hematoma after previously slipping at his house the week prior.[10][11] This was amid already circulating speculations of his health in the weeks prior.[10]

On July 1, 2020, Georg Ratzinger, Benedict's brother, died, shortly after Benedict had visited him in June.[12][13]

On August 3, 2020, after speculation amongst the German press in the wake of a visit from Seewald on August 1, Benedict's aides disclosed that he was suffering from inflammation of the trigeminal nerve, however stating that his condition was not serious.[14] Maltese cardinal Mario Grech reported to Vatican News on December 2, 2020, that Benedict was enduring serious difficulties speaking, reportedly stating to the cardinal consistory that "the Lord has taken away my speech in order to let me appreciate silence".[15]

Despite his health, Benedict became the pope with the greatest longevity on September 4, 2020, at 93 years, 4 months, 16 days, surpassing the age of the previous titleholder Pope Leo XIII.[16]

Two years later, on December 2022, Pope Francis announced that Benedict was "seriously ill". Francis did not disclose the exact nature of his ailment, but called for people to pray for him.[17] Later that day, Holy See Press Office director Matteo Bruni also remarked on Benedict's illness, attributing it to old age and revealing that he was under medical supervision,[18] as well as that Francis had traveled to the Mater Ecclesiae monastery where Benedict was present.[19]

Death

Pope Benedict XVI died at his private residence at the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery on 31 December 2022 at 9:34 am (CET), at 95 years of age.[20]

Funeral

The Vatican has a strict procedure regarding what unfolds during and after the death and funeral of a Pope; however, these plans are specifically geared for the deaths of incumbent Popes.[21] Due to the lack of precedent, the procedure for Benedict's death is currently unknown, with the Vatican initially stating that it will disclose funeral plans in the few hours following his death, aside from stating that his body would lay at St. Peter's Basilica on January 2, 2023.[3] Matteo Bruni revealed that the funeral will occur on January 5, with oversight from Pope Francis.[22][3]
