Michael Graeme Shanks (born 1988) is a Scottish Labour Party politician. He has been Member of Parliament (MP) for Rutherglen and Hamilton West since 2023.
Political career
Shanks was an unsuccessful candidate for Glasgow City Council in 2012,[2] standing for the Scottish Labour Party in the Partick West ward and finishing fifth in the single transferable vote process in which four councillors were elected.[3] He contested the Glasgow Kelvin constituency in the 2016 Scottish Parliament election, coming third,[4] and the Glasgow North West constituency at the 2017 general election, coming second.[5][6][7] He had resigned from the party on the day of the 2019 European Parliament election, citing antisemitism and Brexit, but re-joined when Keir Starmer became leader.[8]
Having moved to Rutherglen from western Glasgow a year earlier,[1] he was selected to contest the Rutherglen and Hamilton West seat in May 2023,[8] in anticipation that the incumbent MP Margaret Ferrier, sanctioned for breaches of COVID-19 restrictions,[9] would lose her position via a recall petition – a process which was concluded with that outcome on 1 August.[10] In the by-election on 5 October, Labour and Shanks overturned the previous 7% Scottish National Party majority to win with a majority of 31% and a swing of 24%, with 58.6% of the vote share.[11][12]
Personal life
Shanks was employed as a modern studies teacher at Park Mains High School in Erskine, Renfrewshire.[13] In 2020 he set himself a challenge to run every street in Glasgow, completing the list of over 6,000 locations in January 2022.[14][15][16] He has also been involved in community and charity initiatives for disabled people.[17][18][19]
