The GLAAD Media Awards were created in 1990 by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation to recognize and honor the media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the LGBT community and the issues that affect their lives.

Barbara Gittings Award

The Barbara Gittings Award is presented annually at the GLAAD Media Awards. It honors a pioneering individual, group or community media outlet that has made a significant contribution to the development of LGBT media. The first recipient was Barbara Gittings in recognition of her groundbreaking work as editor of The Ladder, and for her appearances as an out lesbian on national news media throughout the 70s and 80s.

Davidson/Valentini Award

The Davidson/Valentini Award is presented annually at the GLAAD Media Awards. It is named in memory of Craig Davidson, GLAAD's first executive director, and his partner Michael Valentini, a GLAAD supporter. It is presented in San Francisco to an openly LGBT individual who has made a significant difference in promoting equal rights for the LGBT community.

The Golden Gate Award is presented annually at the San Francisco GLAAD Media Awards. The Golden Gate Award is presented to media professionals who have increased the visibility and understanding of the LGBT community.

Stephen F. Kolzak Award

The Stephen F. Kolzak Award is presented annually at the GLAAD Media Awards. It is named after a highly successful Los Angeles casting director who devoted the last part of his life to fighting AIDS-phobia and homophobia in the entertainment industry. The award is given to an openly gay member of the entertainment or media community for his or her work toward eliminating homophobia.

The Vanguard Award is presented annually at the Los Angeles GLAAD Media Awards to honor a member of the entertainment community who has made a significant difference in promoting equal rights for LGBT people.

Vito Russo Award

The Vito Russo Award is presented annually at the GLAAD Media Awards. It is named in memory of Vito Russo, a founding member of GLAAD and author of The Celluloid Closet. The award is presented at the GLAAD New York annual event to an openly lesbian or gay member of the entertainment or media community for outstanding contributions toward eliminating homophobia.
