Dunki is an upcoming Indian Hindi-language comedy-drama film based on an illegal immigration technique named "Donkey Flight". It is directed by Rajkumar Hirani, who co-wrote the screenplay with Abhijat Joshi and Kanika Dhillon. Produced under the banner of Red Chillies Entertainment and Jio Studios, it stars Shah Rukh Khan, Taapsee Pannu, Vicky Kaushal, and Boman Irani.[2]

Dunki was announced in April 2022 with the principal photography beginning the same month later. The film was wrapped up in April 2023. The filming took place in Mumbai, Kashmir, London, Budapest, Jeddah, Neom and Jabalpur. The soundtrack is composed by Pritam. The editing and cinematography are handled by Hirani and C K Muraleedharan respectively.

Dunki is set to be theatrically released worldwide on 21st December, 2023.[3][4]

Premise

Based on the concept of "Donkey Flight", an unlawful backdoor entry technique for nations like United Kingdom, Canada and the United States, Dunki depicts the lives of Indians who choose to enter the nation using this illegal process and struggle to return home.

Development

In late 2020, it was rumoured that Rajkumar Hirani would make a film featuring Shah Rukh Khan.[5] Hirani narrated the story to Khan during the Covid lockdown in 2020.[6] The film marks Khan's first association with Hirani. Khan revealed that Hirani had offered him roles in his films Munnabhai MBBS and 3 Idiots which he rejected. In August 2021, the screenplay was completed and the film was announced on April 2022.[7][8] Hirani co-wrote the film with Abhijat Joshi and Kanika Dhillon.[5] Cinematographer Amit Roy was chosen first, but he left the film due to creative differences with Hirani and was replaced by C. K. Muraleedharan. This marks his fourth collaboration with Hirani after Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006), 3 Idiots (2009), and PK (2014).[9]

Casting

Mukesh Chhabra was the casting director.[10] Taapsee Pannu was cast as the female lead in January 2021 marking her first collaboration with Khan.[11][12] Vicky Kaushal, Boman Irani, Dia Mirza and Satish Shah joined the cast in October 2022.[13][14]

Filming

Principal photography commenced in April 2022 in Mumbai.[15][16] The Mumbai schedule ended in June 2022 and left for the international schedule in July 2022.[17] Filming took place in Budapest and London in July 2022,[18] and was completed a month later.[19] A bike sequence featuring Khan was filmed in Mumbai in October 2022.[20] A 12-day schedule took place in November 2022 in Saudi Arabia,[21][22][23] which included the locations Jeddah and Neom.[24][25] A three day schedule happened in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh in December 2022.[26] In January 2023, the underwater sequence featuring Khan was filmed in Mumbai.[27] Meanwhile, Khan who was also working on another project Jawan finished his shooting in April 2023.[28] The same month, the team moved to Kashmir for a four-day schedule that took place in Srinagar, Pampore, Sonamarg including Thajwas glacier and Pulwama.[29][30] A song sequence was shot in Kashmir choreographed by Ganesh Acharya.[31] The film was shot over 75 days out of which Khan shot for 60 days. The film is reportedly budgeted at 85 crore.[32]

Soundtrack

The soundtrack is composed by Pritam.[33][34] The first single titled "Lutt Putt Gaya" was released on 22 November 2023.[35] The second single titled "Nikle The Kabhi Hum Ghar Se" was released on 1 December 2023.[36]

Theatrical

Dunki is scheduled to be theatrically released on 21 December 2023.[41] The film was rumored to be postponed to 2024, which was denied by Khan during a press conference for Jawan (2023).[42]

Distribution

Dunki will be distributed by Pen Marudhar Entertainment.[43] It will be distributed by Yash Raj Films in overseas markets, including North America and the United Kingdom.[44]

Home media

International non-theatrical distribution rights for the film were sold for 230 crores, while domestic non-theatrical streaming rights were acquired by JioCinema for 155 crores.[45][46]
