I note there's no citation to the bit about Wesley dying in a swimming pool, so I've gone ahead and added a fact tag to it. If anyone has a source could they go ahead and add that? Thanks. ==Difficult==
The article did read "Most notably directors Ron Howard (Willow) and John Frankenheimer (Batman Forever) spoke out that he was hard to work with." I changed it to read "Joel Schumacher (Batman Forever)" for the simple reason that Schumacher directed the film, not Frankenheimer. However, Kilmer did work with Frankenheimer, but on the film The Island of Dr. Moreau. So which was right--the film or the director? --KQ
:I'm afraid I can't be much help here. My participation on this article was only a minor incidental housekeeping one related to cleaning up Batman links. Otherwise I'm clueless about this issue. *More sourcing needed for "He was initially cast in the part and was excited about playing the Mormon church founder, but had to back out due to other acting obligations. "
*"The play is receiving excellent critical reviews, as are Kilmer and his co-stars. " - on Postman
*"It was claimed that Kilmer purposefully burned a cigar on a cameraman's arm during filming, but Kilmer himself insists that it was an accident. Kilmer also has his defenders who insist that his reputation for beign "difficult" has been widely distorted."
*Also the category "Multiracial Americans" - don't really think it belongs unless a person is distinctly multiracial - Kilmer is just 1/8th Cherokee and has some other "ethnic" ancestry who know how far back.

The kind of hot bad guy (Remember the Dad when all of the kids yelled, "Stranger Danger!") sort of looks like Val, but it's not him. I'm sure they list who the actor really is at the ending credits like they do in every movie that was made in America for the past hundred years now. They're usually pretty thorough about these things and will have things listed like, "guy in elevator" if the part did not even have a name. I mean they're going to have the actors name I'm sure both on the credits and IMDb. SAG have a lot of strict rules about things like that. Thanks for the clarification. I hope you're well stocked on analgesics for the post Halloween headaches. ;-)

Representativity?
Reading the article, Val Kilmer is an actor who has worked solidly since the beginning of his career, mostly producing movies that are either box-office hits or overlooked critical darlings, while otherwise staying out of the limelight - this doesn't seem to describe this actor to a T.

I wouldn't quite call it NPV, and it certainly is in compliance with BLP, but there seem to be some sources of subtle bias: commercial success or reasonable reviews are always mentioned, whereas bad reviews (which are plentiful) are omited. The many (and often wacky) controversies that have been reported over the course of his career aren't mentioned - the exception being the feud with Tom Cruise (currently likely to be considered the one responsible for whatever feuds he has).

In short, it just reads like a publicist-penned bio. It needs a bit of balance. Mip | Talk 18:51, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

Ok, there was no feud with Tom Cruise off camera. They're both pretty professional. I think the performance was so very believable that it's made people's minds feel that there's a real feud going on between the two of them. The only real legitimate qualm or gripe that I have heard anything about was that he didn't really want to do the film in the first place but was forced to under contract with the studio. If you think about his training and background it kind of makes sense because honestly the role is really beneath him. I mean he's Juilliard-trained for phucksake not to mention he's a method actor that's been able to pull off some amazing characters so believably that you forget which is which. He's written a one-man live play that was not even boring and that's pretty hard to do. Since Top Gun surprised everybody with how successful it ended up being I'm sure he's probably long over his adversities to playing that role. I can't help but wonder if it erks him that he is Internationally known for the one roll that seems almost primate-like compared to his incredibly diverse and extensive portfolio of "grown up" roles that I can only imagine he would much rather talk about. Just saying. ==The Doors==
If I'm not mistaken, the information about him memorizing the lyrics to the Doors music is false. I believe that on the Doors dvd, that their is a special feature which includes an interview with Oliver Stone stating that Val had been in a Doors cover band and that he recording a tape which contained his cover bands music and the actual doors and asked Oliver to differentiate between the too. I hope this helps.

Where is he really from?
I live in a very small town in Arizona where Val Kilmer's mother lives, who, by the way, is one of the sweetest women ever. I also work at a resturant where he is known to show up every once in awhile. I was just wondering why in any of his articles why it never mentions our town and the fact that his mother lives her, that he visits frequently and where he supposably went to school for a short period of time and where his brother Mark did go to school. Any suggestions why is is never mentioned? <small>—Preceding unsigned comment added by 4.176.60.170 (talk) 17:41, 9 September 2007 (UTC)</small><!-- Template:UnsignedIP --> <!--Autosigned by SineBot-->

He's probably being protective of his family and the little town that they live in. He works in the public eye. You have to be very, very careful about letting anybody know anything about where you or your loved ones are, or any addresses, phone numbers, license plate numbers, or real last names even because people are phucking crazy. Look at the whole John Lennon thing that was so random, but you never know. So, now, with that frame of mind, can you see why the last thing anyone wants is for the public to know where their parents, siblings, spouse, and kids are at, right?A person could go crazy and never get a decent night's sleep worrying about that. So please keep his mom's favorite hangouts on the down low and not up on Facebook. I suspect this is vandalism but I'm quite new to Wiki and unsure if I should just go ahead and cut out the swathe of text at the start of this article as I can find nothing to back it up with.

I'm sure it's vandalism, as somebody else had added a note about him turning down roles due to his commitment to the KKK.98.232.244.6 (talk) 19:06, 7 June 2010 (UTC)

Joyce Kilmer Second Cousin?
I am guessing more precisely he would be a second cousin once or twice removed due to the number of years between their births.--Jrm2007 (talk) 06:00, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

Parents
I added this content : "His parents divorced when he was eight years old, both remarried. His mother lived in Scott Township in 2000 when she donated to the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh.". It was reverted as "not encyclopedic". I think it's very relevant to his life to know that his parents divorced for one thing, and that he has a step-father and a step-mother. Discuss. Pickle23 (talk) 20:02, 3 December 2009 (UTC)
:The problem with the addition is more complex. The source does not support that his parents divorced when he was eight years old, nor that they both remarried, nor when. The only thing it supports is that Kilmer's mother donated to the museum and began doing so again after her husband died, then gives her picture. It barely mentions anything else. Basically, what is left when the unsupported content is taken away is "this is Kilmer's mother", which is already sourced in the article. At that point, it's a trivial mention of his mother, which really doesn't come close to encyclopedic content. While it might be encyclopedic to add, and properly source, that they divorced and have step-parents, the addition didn't support it. Wildhartlivie (talk) 20:31, 3 December 2009 (UTC)
::Yes and no. It supports these assertions: "Here is a picture of his mother. She was yet alive in 2000. She had married to another man. Here is the name of that man. Her is where she was living. She names her children, including Val Kilmer the actor." If you would consent to adding this reference that she exists with the name of her last husband, I can add the reference to their divorce and her remarriage both of which I have, seperately. I just hadn't added them yet.Pickle23 (talk) 22:19, 3 December 2009 (UTC)
:::A picture of her mother and the fact that she was still living in 2000 and where is what is trivial. If you have reliable sources about the divorce and the remarriage, then that is sufficient and renders the use of this reference moot. The names of his brothers are already listed and sourced. This source just does not add enough that is not already present, and relevant, to the biography. Wildhartlivie (talk) 22:53, 3 December 2009 (UTC)

Neutrality?
Lots of info about his feelings about roles, and about the success of certain pictures. After reading his career section, I was almost convinced that he was an excellent actor. Then I was like, "wait a minute..." *smack* *smack* *smack*.
My point is that right now, it only outlines the positive. We either need to put in more information about particular pictures, whether they were successful or not, or take out all of the gushy shit about specific films and activities.
Just a thought. 206.211.150.208 (talk) 11:54, 15 October 2010 (UTC)

U.S. Marine knocking out Tom Cruise on Top Gun set was falsely attributed to Val Kilmer.
Here's what actually happened:

Cruise was smoking a cigarette on the flight deck of the aircraft carrier in close proximity to highly flammable fuel. When an active Marine told him to put it out, Cruise allegedly spit in his face. The Marine decked Cruise and knocked him out. The whole incident was hushed at the time. If you look closely you can see Cruise's black eye in at least one scene of the film. <span style="font-size: smaller;" class="autosigned">— Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.253.210.25 (talk) 01:24, 3 September 2012 (UTC)</span><!-- Template:Unsigned IP --> <!--Autosigned by SineBot-->

Opinion piece, not encyclopedic entry

This article begins with a listing of movies he has acted in, but then very abruptly after the "stats box" morphs into a highly obvious opinion piece. It needs editing. Mother Newton (talk) 23:47, 20 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Since he developed throat cancer, shouldn't we mention the fact that Kilmer (as he has stated in interviews) began smoking cigarettes at the age of 8? 98.123.38.211 (talk) 03:07, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
