Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is the soundtrack to the 2009 film Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel. It was released on December 1, 2009. It featured musical performances from the Chipmunks and Chipettes, with the bands Honor Society and Queensberry, along with Filipino singer Charice, were featured artists for both the film and the soundtrack. Like its predecessor, the soundtrack was commercially successful, selling around 650,000 units and was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America and Australian Recording Industry Association.

Background

For the Squeakquel, the producers licensed nearly 100 songs from the Chipmunks and Chipettes, where most were not included. While the soundtrack to the predecessor, mostly had original tracks written specifically for the film, its soundtrack, however, featured covers of popular music from artists and bands such as Bee Gees and Alicia Keys amongst several others.[1] Mike Knobloch, executive vice president of Fox Music, attributed that, on the predecessor's music, "people were a lot more tentative as far as roping in talent or artists; for brand-name songs, people just flat-out denied us". As its soundtrack eventually became successful, being certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, Knobloch utilized on covering popular music for the Squeakquel soundtrack.[1]

Commercial response

In December 2009, the album debuted at number 28 at the Billboard 200 chart.[2][3] The film's soundtrack garnered 77,000 copies within first two weeks compared to the predecessor's soundtrack which sold 7,000 copies.[1] By the first week of January 2010, the album gained an upward trend,[4][5] and peaked at number 7 for the week of January 16, 2010, selling 51,000 units.[6] Its highest peak was at number 6, for the week of January 23, where it sold an additional 44,000 copies.[7] Since the album's release, it had sold nearly 650,000 units.[7]
