This is a list of backup software, software which performs data backups, and providers of managed backup services.
Free software
Programs listed here have a Free Software compatible or Open Source license. Freeware is proprietary.
For large networks of systems
- AMANDA BSD - Popular network based backup software.
- BackupPC GPL - Network based backup software with some cutting edge features like de-duplication and HTML reports.
- Bacula GPL - a set of computer programs that permit you (or the system administrator) to manage backup, recovery, and verification of computer data across a network of computers of different kinds.
For small networks of systems
- duplicity GPL - Makes remote encrypted backups using rsync and gnupg.
- dump - The classic UNIX filesystem dumper.
- tar - The classic UNIX file aggregator. Work with gzip in a pipe to create tar, tar.gz (tgz) archives.
- cpio - Unix/Linux archiver.
- afio - Unix/Linux archiver, a better cpio. Supports multi-volume compressed archives.
- DAR GPL - Disk Archiver. Supports multi-volume compressed archives. Dump, Tar, cpio, afio and DAR support piping and can be used over a network.
- rdiff-backup GPL - Uses rsync library to implement a Mirror + Reverse Incrementals style repository.
- rsnapshot GPL - Uses rsync to compare and copy files. Additionally, uses hardlinks to preserve backup capacities.
- rsync GPL - Powerful tool for maintaining mirrors and much more.

- Cobian Backup MPL - supports FTP, compression, encryption, incremental/differential backup

It is important to think about whether managing backups is better handled internally or by an external person or organization. There are advantages and disadvantages with both options.
